Colleagues,Tonight, I will share 4 images of an area of the Jefferson Canyon, where I have experimented with using "Rocktex_2" which a colleague uploaded to the library sometime back. I have also created 1/2 & 1/4 mixes of this with "scrubrock" and "scrubterrain" & the iffy part, is that to make it really work, I will probably have to do these also in "snow textures" as well, otherwise it will be a fair weather only sim I guess.I also used some transfers, typically dimensioned 250x50 to green up the area nearest the water, and in the final version, there will be scrubby bushes along the river, and occasional trees. There is not much vegetation of large size in the canyon.I have aligned most of the textures the same way, since the canyon is layers of sandstone strata, but I believe that randomizing the textures will look better since there is a repeating pattern in the rocktex_2 .ace files. After gazing at the images, please provide me with your comments and suggestions, especially those westerners among you. If you do not want to clutter up the forum, you can E-mail me at jhsulliv@comcast.net.By the way, the 4th image will appear quite peculiar. It doesn't look this way in the sim., so I guess my video car hiccupped as the system was busy at this point - but the result is quite good for the purpose.J. H. Sullivan

RE: Adjusting colors etc., Jefferson Canyon, need opini

#1 is good
#2 is great
#3 is abysmal
#4 is greatTo be honest, it would have been better taking the 4 pictures at the same place. That might alter my opinion a little! #3 just looks completely wrong, no offence meant, but it doesn't work.Geoff M.

I agree about the same location comment, and also that #3 doesn't cut it. I had gone further with the scenery in #1 & #2, and #4 looks back at the general area of 1 & 2, while 3 looks ahead to the last curves before Jefferson Island - engine is passing over the East Switch to that passing track. I have about decided to go with the rock texturing in 1 & 2, with grass or scrub transfers along the track, and perhaps some dark grey transfers right under the track to denote greasy spots etc., and I will use random orientation for the rock textures. This is not technically correct, but it seems to provide a better image. Also use of as few a number of different textures as possible reduces the load on the video card(s).At the location(s) of all of these, there is also MT. Rt.2 on the NP side, beyond the tracks, and (I assume) at approximately the same level. Aerial imagery suggests that traffic is not heavy on this route, although it was probably heavier before I-90 was built a few miles to the northwest.J. H. Sullivan

You plan sounds good Jerry. While the rocky textures look good away from the track, they look terrible when representing the roadbed. I've run into the same thing on the Coast. Transfers along the ROW should really improve the appearance.Even better would be custom textures, but then you are really looking at a big job.Todd
