Columbia Gorge – Screenshots – image 1

Here's a few more shots of Columbia Gorge. This time we are on the Washington side of the river near the town (??) of Hood. Hood is the end of the line for phase 1 on the Washington side. No, this doesn't mean I'm done! I got tired of working on the Oregon side and decided to go to the end of the line on the Washington side and work Eastbound. The first two shots show the confluence of the White Salmon River and the Columbia.
Columbia Gorge – Screenshots – image 2
Columbia Gorge – Screenshots – image 3The next shot shows one of many dense forest regions on the route. This is just a couple miles east of Hood.
Columbia Gorge – Screenshots – image 4This is the fish hatchery at Hood.
Columbia Gorge – Screenshots – image 5The last shot shows Hood. This was apparently an operating lumber mill at one time but now is a bunch of rusting metal. Since I didn't have access to any rusty buildings, this is what you get!

RE: Columbia Gorge -- Screenshots

It looks like the truss bridge would be a little low for double stacks.High train, low bridge, something has to give... Steven

I'll have a look at that. That was the only small truss bridge I could find. I'll do some more looking. Thanks for spotting it. And to think, beta testing hasn't even started, yet!Cal Rasmussen

RE: Columbia Gorge -- Screenshots

You're using a back road hay bridge. It is not designed for trains. Check for a 100ft or 125ft truss bridge that should work in that location.SRV Ron

WOW! That's great. I recognize White Salmon - and it's been many a year simce I was there. It's exciting to see places in MSTS and recognize them. Great work, Cal! (Even if your bridge is too low! )Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Columbia Gorge -- Screenshots

The bridge isn't too low, he's just modeling the wrong era! There should be an SP&S 700 crossing that bridge! No double stacks or other ridiculous loads at all.Very nice scenes Cal, I too, recognize the places you are modeling, and will look foreward to being able to play on the North Bank Route.

RE: Columbia Gorge -- Screenshots

CalI have been down both sides of the gorge on AMTRAK and it is a nice route. Unfortunatly the UP side is without passneger trains now since the Pioneer was cancelled. There was some talk a while back about running the Pioneer on CNW and UP tracks all the way from Chicago to Portland but nothing came of it. You can tell how long ago this was because the CNW was still operating at the time.Looking forward to the route.Be Seeing you.

I replaced the bridge with another one from the same Ron Picardi kit as the first. None of these cars cleared the original bridge.Columbia Gorge – Screenshots – image 13Martyn, which building are you referring to?Cal Rasmussen

RE: Columbia Gorge -- Screenshots

Cal has found the right one. There is a rusty one in the kit.The rusty tin, SRV_RealTinSiding.bmp, is available for anyone using a modeling program to create the larger buildings. It was photographed from a tin sided sliding shed door. Just be sure to tile the texture for a more realistic effect.SRV Ron

Martyn, all the buildings in the Hood area are either default buildings or Enocell. There are about ten buildings in all. I may look at Ron's rusty cowbarns to see if they could work.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Columbia Gorge -- Screenshots

Looks good Cal!Definately captures the feel of the area. For the rusty buidling you might be able to enlarge a small rusty building using shape file manager - Ron did some cattle, chicken and hog barns with a rusty version, and they really look great - not sure how it would look "enlarged" - but animals aren't included, so this might get you where you want to go - without reskinning or starting from scratch.Mark

It's freeware. Phase 1 includes the The Dalles Dam but stops just a few miles short of Bonneville Dam. Bonneville will be included in phase 2.Cal Rasmussen

Sorry, but the route is only going as far as the edge of Troutdale on the UP and Vancouver,USA on BNSF. Right now, the zipped size of the route is about 600 mb! I know that number will be reduced significantly when I run Route-riter on it. There are a ton of scenery objects which I installed but am not using. Those will all be removed. I think I can also remove quite a few tiles that are not needed. It is way too early to determine any of that yet. Phase 1 will include all tiles for entire route. The tiles for phase 2 have already been DEMd. Phase 1 will include the Mt. Hood RR branch up to the switchback. Phase 2 will include the entire Mt. Hood branch all the way to Parkdale. Do a search in this forum (including archives) and in the screenshot forum for more pictures of Columbia Gorge.Cal Rasmussen
