A few more shots of the Cumbres Pass line. Today's excursion takes us from Sublette through the most exciting scenery of the route, ending up in Osier. The tail end of the train (to turn up missing later) pulling out of Sublette:
Progress continues to Osier – image 1It's clear we're up in the high country now, with all the "quaky Aspens," as my grandpa used to call them, around:
Progress continues to Osier – image 2Just heading out of Mud Tunnel, just past MP 311:
Progress continues to Osier – image 3And heading into Phantom Curve, about a mile on down the line:
Progress continues to Osier – image 4Coming out of Toltec (Rock) Tunnel, you can see the stone retaining wall and the Garfield Monument at the left edge of the shot:
Progress continues to Osier – image 5While we're working away to get these goods to their waiting owners, there's bound to be some lucky guys flicking a few flies at the trout in the Los Pinos down there:
Progress continues to Osier – image 6We finally pull into Osier:
Progress continues to Osier – image 7But wait - what happened to the rest of the train?
Progress continues to Osier – image 8Actually, I noticed that it uncoupled at the turnout to the Osier siding. I don't know if I have something set so that it doesn't stop the sim when a coupler breaks, but I was able to run on in to Osier (about a 1/4 mile away) and maneuver a bit with the loco and the one remaining boxcar. I have no idea what happened here, but the guys in the caboose won't be very happy, having to hike on up to the depot for lunch.A few odds and ends to take care of to this point (MP 318), but the route is close to finished to this point. Most of the scenery is in place to MP 322, and in places between Los Pinos and Chama. I'll post more as it's completed. I'm still working to have it done by Christmas, but that's not that far away any more!Andy

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

Hey Andy,Experience and a lot of work really do pay off. This is looking to be a great route, and for all the narrow gauge fans, between this and Sumpter, they ought to have a ball when we get finished! Only catch with Sumpter is that a K-36 or any other cars, must be off the line on a spur, to pass.

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

Thanks, Jonathan (and the rest of you guys, too). And howdy, Kevin. I haven't seen you post for a while. Welcome back.I do plan to upload the custom buildings and structures, as well as some of the custom terrain textures, and have started writing up the readme file on it and gathering the files into one place. I hope to have that done by the end of the month. It would probably go faster, but I need to get some thumbnails of the different structures, which I haven't generated yet.Andy

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

Hi Andy...Looking very, very nice. Excellent work.Re: Uncoupled train -"I have no idea what happened here..."You've got a "border line" switchnode timing problem. That is, the distance between two switches was not great enough to build up enough error to cause the dynamics of the adjustment sequence to BREAK the coupler, but enough stress in the jerking back and forth to UNCOUPLE the train. Your only options are:A. Up the break values of the rollingstock. (If already upped, then go to "B".)B. Add a switch approximately in the middle of the long stretch of track on which this occurred.A bummer, yes, but that's life in the fast lane with MSTS. Another thing:It may be too late to help you now, but I noted you're using the Xtracks standard two-piece track sections for pass tracks. Unfortunately, those won't clear another K class engine. That is, the bounding boxes will collide. If you adjust the bounding boxes so they won't collide, the K's will "overlap/merge" as the pass by each other. You can see the syndrome by looking at the distance from the edge of the K's cylinders to the proximity of adjacent track in the 7th pic down. I was able to bypass this issue with mulitiple narrow gauge track pieces on my narrow gauge routes because I was using small 1880's equipment. It may be something that you'll have to live with at the advanced stage of your route. Just another of the many "gotcha's" you get to enjoy when building a route for this sim! Andre Ming

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

"Just another of the many "gotcha's" " Not exactly! The K-36's are properly scaled, and are truly much wider than any other narrow gauge equipment (aside from the logging camp cars on the SVRy, which are about the same). Using the standard siding combinations, 2 SVRy mallets can pass ok.Any activities built around moving these camp cars must take this into account, they, or the train they are passing must be off the line on a spur, or in the few spots that this is possible, 2 tracks over. The same will occur with the K-36's unless extra wide siding clearances are in place. Makes for interesting operations!

" Just another of the many "gotcha's" " Not exactly! The K-36's are properly scaled...", Actually, I was in reference to the close spacing of the narrow gauge two/three-track pieces when laying track in RE and not the K's themselves. Prototype narrow gauge track has proportionately wider spacing between two tracks than does standard gauge to account for the overhang of the narrow gauge equipment. In otherwords, if you make the spacing between narrow gauge track look like the spacing of standard gauge... the clearances will be too tight. The K's are innocent.Andre Ming

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

Ah. NOW I remember. Too late, of course, but I do recall this being an issue when the K36 first came out. On the first version of the route, using standard gauge, it wasn't an issue, but it probably will for this one. Naturally I've already placed all the sidings and platforms, and have about 60% of the mileposts in place. I guess it's time to get Jonathan's C class locos out on the line for a ride.I haven't seen you around for a while, Andre. Hope things are going OK on your end.Andy

Hi Andy! You said:"I haven't seen you around for a while, Andre. Hope things are going OK on your end."I've been around in the background, but have been busy with all sorts of things, both MSTS related and not. Plus, I've been out of town a lot the past few months. In all... not going anywhere in regards to the forums or MSTS... just not the blabbermouth I used to be. Andre

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

Thanks for your interest in my SC&N, John. The last version is safely tucked away on CD awaiting the day that I can return to it. The trackage is 100% finished. The scenery was coming along, and structure placement had begun. Of course, my original intention was to finish it up and share it with everyone. However, I needed to move XTracks out of my MSTS folder and return to the default tsection.dat to do some commercial route work. That is the status as of now. Still no XTracks, hence, no SC&N or other of my routes using XTracks. "One of these days" I hope to finish it up and share it with any that would enjoy it.Below are a couple pics that were posted a long time ago, but illustrate the stage it was at before packing away. If I were to return to it right now... the default spruce trees would be replaced with trees Phil Voxland's excellent tree packs.Andre

RE: Progress continues to Osier...

I know how it is. I'm getting ready for a pretty busy stretch myself. Even though I wouldn't know any of the folks here on the forums if they ran me over, you do notice when someone isn't as active. It's always good to hear the changes are for other than bad reasons.Andy
