Colleagues,Attached is a capture of the editor from next to Fish Creek Tunnel #10, looking railroad west. In the distance is Fish Creek Trestle, and this is my attempt at creating the rather rocky, sort of barren look which this side of PipeStone Pass has in all the photographs I have of it. There are a mixture of what appear to be igneous (volcanic), limestone, and some granite rocks, clumps etc. I have used a rocky texture which one of us put in the library some while back, and I am also experimenting with creating my own textures which would mix various uploaded, and out-of-the-box textures so there won't be such a sudden demarcation between soil types. There is also not much vegetation on this side of the pass either, whereas from a point about 2 miles east of the summit, all the way to Butte, trees etc. are pretty thick.
I have also, lately, been fabricating the wooden trestles which dot the R/W west of Butte, all the way to Deer Lodge, with special attention to those in Silver Bow Canyon.J. H. Sullivan

It looks really good. You appear to have two different rock textures in use there. Perhaps you could create some transition texture squares to ease the transition between the two so as to eliminate the line. The effect of a track bed blasted out of solid rock is very good. I need to create a tunnel blasted out of solid rock with no portals. Consequently , I am very interested in what you are doing.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Creeks, Rivers, Rocks -- Milwaukee Road RMD-2

I answered Cal's comment directly to him, but basically, I found that creating the tunnel "portal" was the hardest part. I used a multi-section box (in TSM), and then shaped the center part to form the arch of the tunnel. I used a 14' bore width and this came out close to the tunnel dimensions MSTS uses, but their tunnel pieces have peaked roof, so as you progress through the tunnel, you will see sort of a shadow in the shape of the portal at the far end.
Then I used a rock texture to texture the visible surfaces, and lastly, I jiggled in and out some of the intersection points on the visible faces to create the effect of rough blasting - which is not really that rough. A good blasting job, followed by the usual chipping hammers is not terribly rough - if it were, it would increase the danger of rock falls.J. H. Sullivan

Here is a view of the west portal of Fish Creek Tunnel. Note that the sharp break in the hill side rocks at the left has been corrected by another piece of the same wall that just disappears at an angle into the hillside.Jerry
