Close-up of Jon Davis's big 3-drum yarder, with it's chord-wood fuel stacked alongside. Jon also built the Oregon Lumber Co. Climax Lokey #105, in the background of these pix.Camp 1 is located in a hollow, and doesn't allow good photographic opportunities, yet. There ya go, Jim. I hope to add more to the logging runs later.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request – image 4

LAST EDITED ON Oct-03-03 AT 01:12 AM (EDT)

Hey Tim,
I need some extremely large log piles--about 150 ft long by about 30 ft high. I can make the piles and I have some photos for the log end textures. What I need is some textures for the top or pile ends. Do you have anything I might be able to use? There is a huge lumber mill in Bingen, WA with about a dozen of these huge log piles. I was thinking of scouting out some of the local lumber mills and shooting some pictures there. There is a mill near Scoggins Dam at Hagg Lake just south of Forest Grove. That's not too far from where I work. Maybe I'll take a quick drive out there at lunch tomorrow.(Edit) Here is a USAPhotoMap shot of the mill. The log piles are in the lower center of the picture.

I was so caught up in my own needs, I was rude. That is excellent work. I especially like the cable and pulley detail. I know how difficult that must be. I know how I would do it with transparent panels but not sure if that is what you did. I think the same technique could be used with power lines.Anyway, the SVR and your various routes are all "Must haves" in my book.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request

Hey, that's alright, Cal. We're here to help each other, right? Isn't this the whole reason for these forums? Thanks for your kind comments. The cables are 3-sided tubes, with wrapped textures. The blocks and sheaves are done with alphas. They are old, now, and I think I'd do it differently today. Too many polys in the pulleys! I have some 512 textures for these logs, My 1024's don't seem to be working for some reason. They are taken from old photos and edited and enhanced in PSP. You are welcome to them, if you want. Just drop me an email, and I'll package-up the lot.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Camp 1 shot and picture for Cal.

"Camp 1 is located in a hollow, and doesn't allow good photographic opportunities, yet." I didn't have any trouble finding a good angle!Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request – image 8Cal, I have a shot of a small log pile, could you work from this? I can send you a better quality image. I used parts of this for Tims's cordwood pile texture.Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request – image 9

RE: Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request

Thanks again, Rich, on behalf of Steve and myself! I really like Steve's terrtex work. It really captures the feel of slash everywhere, as best we can with the program. Here are more scenes of the camps.

Well, if Steve can get a pic at Camp 1, then I better try again! Here we are at 8 am, and the sun shines between the hills on the loader and train.Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request – image 11
Back at Camp2, at the newer site (last night). This one's for you, Rich!Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request – image 12
I'd sure like to do a route that's all logging. Like traction, there are seemingly an infinite variety of prototype companies and situations to model.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request

Yes, and no. Jon Davis did animate one of the donkeys, the drum spins and the engine works. I did some sounds of the engines working, along with random donkey engine whistles. We did some experimenting, and worked it so logs could be moved up the hill to the pile, in an activity, but that was just more work than the result was worth.Niether of us have Bull Burnett and crew's genius for animations! Also, this thing is taking long enough without further sidetracks!!!

RE: Sumpter Logging Scenes By Request

Steve,I emailed you a zip containing the animated smoke done by Volker Bollig. It looks pretty good at the top of factory smokestacks, but I don't think it will look very realistic close to the track.Bill Burnett
