OT – Angel – R.I.P – image 2This is Angel, our 12-year old Pomeranian. Angel went to be with God today. Her kidneys failed about two weeks ago and we had hoped to be able to nurse her along for a few months but she was getting steadily worse over the past week. She was down to 4 lbs from her normal weight of 6-1/2 lbs. The vet put her to sleep, today. I think it was the most humane thing to do.We have a 4-month old Sheltie who will get all of our attention from now on.I know this is way off topic and in the wrong forum for off topic posts but I have far more friends in this forum than any of the others so I put it here.Cal Rasmussen

Sorry to hear about your loss, Cal. I'm sure your decision was the right one, difficult as it was. It sounds like she'll be right at home from now on, given the name you gave her.Don't worry about off-topic. I think it says "Route Design Forum," not MSTS Route Design Forum. From my end, anyway, I can certainly see your post as a connection to the design of your route through one day at a time...Andy

RE: OT-- Angel -- R.I.P.

Sorry to hear you lost one of your best friend. I know how you feel. I went through the same thing when I lost my friend Foxy (same kind of dog and colors as yours but he was a male) about 10 years ago. It took me a while to get over it so I got another of the same kind, a female name well, I'll give you a hint; it's in my banner below.

I'm sorry to hear about Angel. I have had and have lost many a pet. It is hard. But we should be happy that she is in an even better place now - that part is easy to forget when we miss them so much.Shawn

Had a similar experience last week when a fifteen year old cat went to sleep for the final time. His case it was the liver which failed.
A special diet might have saved him for some time but he would not eat.
It's only an animal but it's also a family member.

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and comments. We really loved that little dog and will miss her a lot.Ever since I started Columbia Gorge, I have been considering putting a picture of Angel somewhere in the route. Now it is definite. There will be a picture, possibly the one above. I don't have a location in mind, yet, but I will find an appropriate spot to remember her.Cal Rasmussen

RE: OT-- Angel -- R.I.P.

Cal,
Our pets do become part of our family and it is very hard when we loose one. We even refer to our dog max, as our son who does not speak very well The love they return is special, it's funny, do we pick them or do they pick us? Remember, when they leave us it's just for a little while, for when we die they will be waiting for us on the Rainbow bridge to show us the way home to heaven. Take care Cal and give your other puppy a hug, cause she will feel the loss as well.God Bless,
Rich S.

RE: OT-- Angel -- R.I.P.

A great idea, Cal. I may do something similar in my Cumbres route. My dad bought the copy of MSTS I have, and was very interested in seeing if the program could be used to replicate the line from Alamosa. He had childhood memories of riding with his grandfather on that line, and wanted to have the opportunity to relive some of those memories. Unfortunately, his computer didn't have the horsepower to run the program, so it sat on the shelf. He passed away about 3 months later, and never got to see the virtual version of the line. It's one of my motivations for building the route, and your thought of putting a picture of Angel along the Columbia Gorge makes me think that it would be a nice tribute to do something similar for my dad. Cal,I can empathize completely. Our long time family member and donkey, Zsa-Zsa Gaburro was attacked by a loose Bull Mastiff on Sunday, and we just had to put her down due to her injuries. She was a great friend, we'd had for 17 years, and being long lived, she should have been here another 30 or so at least. It's really hard to think, she won't be there to greet me in the mornings with a bray (come play with me).My condolences,

Steve T.

RE: OT-- Angel -- R.I.P.

Sorry to hear about Angel and Zsa Zsa Gaburro. Losing a beloved pet to old age is one thing. Having one get fatally injured by some low life or their dangerous animal running loose is frighting.A person near here lost a pregant mini to loose Rotts last Spring. With my three "Munchkins" that replace the old pony of 40 years last fall, I have made sure that my 3 acres of fence line is as dog proof as possible. 48 inches of 2x4 woven wire topped with electric and tight to the ground with close spaced ties between the posts. I check it twice a day. Watched a big black lab running loose in the park, poorly supervised, but just wanted to play, bounce off the fence when he ran into it at a dead run. Still, it is difficult to make any fence 100% dogproof. And, you just can't keep any pet locked up inside a cage or barn 24-7 for its own safety.Unfortunely, some people just won't accept the responsibility to keep their big dogs under control, resulting in such needless attacks on our beloved pets, children, or loved ones. It also creates fertle feeding for the leaches and restricts our freedom when new and rediculous zoaning laws are passed.Pic of one of the "Munchkins."SRV Ron

RE: OT-- Angel -- R.I.P.

I'm sorry for your loss, and I empathize completely. Last October 3 I lost my cat Tiger after over 15 years. Of our three cats she was the one I was most attached to. I was completely devastated for over a month, and even now feel badly now and then. On July 24 another of our cats, Suzette, passed away. Again, I felt horribly, and also found that my not quite healed wounds over Tiger were reopened. Our animal friends have a way of filling places we never knew were empty. When they're gone those places are suddenly empty again, and all we're left with are fond memories.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. My mother also lost her longtime pet, Sally, of 14 years about three months ago and I had to give away my two labs in March because of a situation with a neighbor's cat. It was tough going to mom's in August and not seeing Sally and it's still hard for me to come home and not find JJ and Rocky waiting to greet me. Our pets become more a part of our families than we realize!

Sorry for your loss, some may say that it's only a pet but I can tell you there are two lil kitty cats running around this place that have worked their way in to my mine and my wife's heart in the last 10 months.

I am sorry to hear the sad news. But I'm sure your Pom has lived a good, full life and has done her duty to always be by your side even during the bleakest of situations. I must say, this event is going to make me care even more for my own dog, Moira, part Shepherd, Collie and Chow. Even though she's only two years old, I've realized she isn't going to last forever.

I don't think I've ever posted in here before but I've been lurking since I joined. Couldn't resist but to reply to this one.I'm very sorry for your loss Cal. As others have said, the family pet is more a family member than a pet at all. They're the ones who always listen and it's impossible to stay mad at, they're always happy to see you no matter how late you stayed out, and most of all they'll always share comfort food with you. Even though most of the time they can't have any... You made the humane choice, hard as it was to do. You're a good person, evidenced many times in your posts. All dogs go to heaven! Starz, our 9-year old cocker spaniel, wishes Angel well on her journey. Not the best picture but I didn't have time to go through all 4000 I have before work today.
