I couldn't find anything in the archives, so here goes...,I downloaded and installed Phil Voxland’s PVTREES1, per the instruction. I was really impressed with the treelines.I manually (key word here), one module at a time, positioned several selected treelines a fair distance from the mainline. I fiddled and fooled with them until I was pleased with what I hoped would be a desirable effect. I fired up the sim and rolled down the line to where the trees where and was very pleased with the result. So this is a good thing!!I fooled around with some other things in RE, ran the sim a few more times…, and life was good!!A day or so later, while trying to add additional objects to the route, I was using the ‘control’ key quite extensively for moving and rotating. After placing several objects, the system ‘crashed’. I rebooted, placed a few more object, with the control key…., then crashed again. I began to think that I screwed something up when I installed PVTREES1. I removed the route (with PVTREES) and replace it with a previously saved (by a few days) copy that did not have PVTREES.I started to place a small bridge section at the river. I used the ‘control’ key extensively. I barely got the bridge piece in place, and BAM…… crash. It would seem that the ‘control’ key in conjunction with the rotation and move buttons, is the culprit here.I suppose the questions are…..,
Why would this be happening? When not using the ‘control’ key for moving and rotating, all seemed fine. Has anyone else experienced this condition? Any fix?I’m going to attempt adding a few more objects without the ‘control’ key to see what, if anything happens and will advise.Thanx in advance for your insightsEDIT HERE;I just attempted to place the same bridge section “without” using the ‘control key’. My duration in the RE was considerably longer, however the end result was the same…, Crash!!
Well folks, for what it’s worth…, I think I found my problem. I pass this information along so others may find it useful, if faced with a similar condition. Some where along the way, It appears that my route “test” activity became contaminated. This was my second incidence of system crashes. The first was because the test activity had become inoperable (broken) as a result of track changes made to the route while the test activity existed. A clean break between the start and finish points in the route. I hadn’t realized that this had occurred. Well…, I was aware that the physical track modification had occurred, but unaware that it was going to affect the existing activity. In any event neither the RE nor the Sim would perform properly. Mind you, I’m still fairly new to this…, but damn, I’m learning fast!!This latest occurrence of crashes, reacting the same way as the first…, also seems to be the result of the test activity’s failure. I visually examined the file and I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. It looked perfectly normal to me. But then, I don’t really know what I’m looking for either. I removed the ‘activity file’ from a backup (father) copy, and ran both the RE and Sim. All seemed fine. Mind you I didn’t have Sim crashes like I did in the first occurrence, just RE crashes. Course I may not have run the Sim for a long enough period of time to obtain a crash.I believe what started all this, was my attempt at installing Alltools.zip. A batch file that will put all the shapes files, terrtex files and textures into your route directory saving the need to copy all over separately. Not that there is a problem with Alltools, but rather I made some errors along the way. I thought that I had corrected them properly, but apparently not.The discovery occurred when I ran a still earlier (grandfather) copy of the route in the RE. A copy that happened ‘not’ to have an activity in it. It performed perfectly normal in the RE. That is when I realized the “test” activity was the culprit. And some how must have become contaminated or disturbed. In any event, we are back to square one, well…, maybe square 15 or 16. Maybe someone will find this helpful. Have a sparkling day!!
Thanks for the follow-up to your own query. I was driving back today from Northern Minnesota, where most of the trees you were using were photographed. It's a 4 hour drive so there's lots of time to think about things including a possibly reply to your call for help. All I was going to say was that when there are no replies to a post one of the best explanations for that is that nobody knows the answer or has experienced the same problem. I APPLAUD that you had back-ups to turn to that allowed you to eliminate some possible explanations. When I first started route building I ran into all sorts of problems (and I still do). However, I kept saying to myself, that other folks had created wonderfully complex and interesting routes and so there must be a way to overcome problems. -- Phil Voxland
