RE: I'm curious, are there any other NS routes being ma

After starting over about five times, I'm working on a 20 mile or so stretch of the Harrisburg Line, in southcentral PA. My track begins at Main and Race Streets in Richland and will go as far west as Palmyra. Currently, I'm working on the yard at 16th Street, just west of CP Wall in Lebanon. The route will feature plenty of switching opportunities at the Elk shingle plant, Lebanon Chemical Corporation, Cargill Foods, the limestone quarry operation at Pennsylvania Lime and other industries as well as some mainline running.

Sounds good to me. I tried making the NS Hagerstown Dist..from Shenandoah, Va-Front Royal, Va..but that wasnt very successful..I also tried making a fictional NS/CSX route but I have given up on that. Its been months sense I have even touched it

RE: I'm curious, are there any other NS routes being ma

The former Southern Rwy Saluda grade is what I've been working on (at least before East River came out! That thing's addictive!).
Got the track all laid and rwy bridges made and set. Tweaking the track now to try to get the kinks out (The little motor car is great for this.) Also tweaking the terrain a little. Don't have a finish date yet.
BTW, I have had a few runaways while testing. To be honest, I have yet to descend according to the rules (about 4 MPH).John Marbury

RE: I'm curious, are there any other NS routes being ma

The ATSF Marceline Subdivision route is actually a JOINT ATSF and NS route.NS Kansas City District is included and is a fully functioning part of this route package. Line current runs from Palmer Creek (east of Brunswick, MO) to Avondale Yard in North Kansas City with connection to the KC Terminal via the Rock Island connection at Birmingham, MO.

As a former Southern Employee who has been down Saluda several dozen times on a track geometry car, I can say that you likely won't get down it according to the rules until MSTS has a way to "set up retainers".J. H. Sullivan, P.E.

RE: I'm curious, are there any other NS routes being ma

Jerry:
You could be right, but I won't dream that MS will even understand retainers much less include them. I don't really understand them myself. Meanwhile, I will be trying to accomplish a successful descent into Melrose using hand brakes along with limiting the size of the train. The NS rules, if I remember, required hand brakes be set if you had an emergency stop on the way down anyway, so maybe I can eventually get a coal train down sort of legally using that.At this time I am still working on the route, so don't run it to much except for tests.BTW, d/l'd Kingsport today and am enjoying your good works. Thanks,
John

RE: I'm curious, are there any other NS routes being ma

Retainers, and later the ABDW brake system worked like this. If the retainers were turned up, literally the handle was move to the horizonal position from pointing down, when the initial brake application was made, the air would not release from the brake cylinders instantly when the trainline was recharged. In fact it would take several minutes of released brakes for the cylinders to completely discharge. This being the case, an engineer would recycle the trainline, and each time he recharged it to the release pressure, he could then "put down some more air" and the pressure in the cylinders, which applie the mechanical brakes, would either maintain their initial pressure, or slightly increase it each time. Otherwise, on a steep, descinding grade, the brakes might bleed off, and then with the train line reduced, there would be no more braking pressure and then -----.
ABDW brakes accomplish the same thing by having a graduated release built in. Such cars still have the retaining feature, but it is rarely used. Most unit coal trains will have this later type brake system, and in addition, there will be a sensor on one of the trucks that detects (by the compression of the spring nests) whether the car is loaded or empty. An empty car will not be allowed to have as much braking pressure as a loaded car.
And, yes, I expect that MSTS will never have these refinements.J. H. Sullivan

I will be picking up on the "Pokey" were Austin left off. But this will be my first adventure into route building so it will be a while.

I can probably get track charts AND video shot from the back of the track test car for almost any NS route you or anyone wants. It may take a little time as I stay pretty busy.
E-mail me at high-green@charter.net if interested. Tell me MP limits and division you want.

Kewl! I'd like to have such things for the Decatur-St. Louis line, St. Louis to Moberly and the various branch-lines in Missouri if at all possible! Will be happy to reimburse for copying/mailing costs, too!

Jim,
Before my computer crash I had a set of N&W track charts from the 70s sent to me. Unfortunetly I can't remember who sent them, I don't think they are active in the forum anymore. If I can track this person down, I'll let you know.

It would be nice if someone picked up the former Virginian where Austin left off as well. The line from Mullins to Kellysville (I believe he included Princeton) had it's interesting points as well as being double track. It was also electrified prior to 1958 or so.J. H. Sullivan

Hey gang:Don't forget the word SOUTHERN in Norfolk Southern. I'm doing Atlanta to Greenville - the Piedmont Division. Should be complete in 2008 if things keep up as they have been. Hope to release a small part this year.Mark

Well, I felt lucky to escape from the Southern Railway back in 1978, but I am also glad that kept my stock - now an indecent amount for someone that just retired from CSX.My large number of shares is pledged to vote against anything that David Goode wants to do - after he trashed the steam program, cheapest advertisement NS had.J. RE: I'm curious, are there any other NS routes being ma

Would anyone in this discussion be interested in pre-testing ATSF Marceline v0.6? The N&W Kansas City District has been finished although the ATSF and KCT portions are, as yet, incomplete. If so, please send me a PRIVATE MAIL and I'll give you instruction on where to get the route....CAVEAT: This is NOT intended for distribution (either the pre-release or the alpha testing volunteer info). NO guarantee is made on the reliability or readiness of the route at this time. I'm simply hoping to find 2-3 people willing to run the heck out of the NS portion of the route and give VERY critical feedback while I continue working on re-terraining the rest of the route...Thanks!
