Here are some screens of the #1100 and the #611, finished models. Please ignore the silly consists they are carrying, I just needed to get something to get the couplers right. As far as consists go, I was planning on making my own N&W coal cars for the 1218 and the 2171 to carry, but I wasn't aware that someone had already made some. I still have to make some N&W passenger cars for the 611, then I guess I'll probably post this thing.

RE: Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class

Actually, the unstreamlined 4-8-4's were J-1's and numbered 605-610. They lasted unstreamlined for about 2 years when they were reclassified J's and streamlined, following the end of the war and restrictions lifted on the railroads. But I agree that they would make a very interesting addition! The M2 and J look very good, as well as the Y-6b! Keep up the good work Blackhawk2000!Mykel

RE: Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class

WOW, Outstanding work Blackhawk.I noticed in your other post, that the “A” had a “boiler tube” Pilot, that COULD be correct, most of the ones I saw (In photographs) had the same pilot as the “J”s did, but a few of the OLDER ones, had Boiler tube pilots. The 1218 has the more modern “J” style.
And the older ones got the new style as they where rebuiltAS too you’re M2, that is a NICE “1100” but you should know that it was a one off locomotive and very much not a typical of Norfolk & Western “M” class locomotives.
It was VERY different than typical M’s aside from the skyline casting over the steam domes. It also had a LARGER tender and was equipped with a stoker, I believe it was the ONLY “M” to have a stoker; it also had experimental equipment to maintain boiler pressure, without human assistance. The N&W was looking to build a steam switcher that could have the readiness of a diesel, one that could sit around all day and all night simmering without a fireman, and be ready for service moments after a crew climbed onboard, just like a Diesel. It was another one of the Norfolk &Western’s grand experiments to stave off the Diesel Locomotive in the mid 1950’s Here is a MUST HAVE LINK, for you to help you in your most honorable quest of bringing the “Gods of Roanoke” in all of their “coal-hauling, coal-BURNING, super power glory to MSTS, just the thing to make all the “lesser” steamers bow-down properlyhttp://imagebase.lib.vt.edu/browse.php?folio_ID=/trans/nssI am attaching 2 pics of the Norfolk & Western “Big Three” as they where called, notice that the “A’s” have BOTH pilot styles in the two photos, for those that don’t know the NW too well, the “Y6” classes where the “2100’s” give or take a few, the “A” where the “1200” and the “J’s” where the “600’s” All pronounced “hundreds” in NW parlance it would be termed “Did you see that “twelve hundred” come thru Bluefield last night? Referring to an “A” class locomotiveI really enjoy speaking to some of the “old timers” most don’t know the engines by “class” (unless we rail fans have taught them over the years)They know them by “hundreds”Also a pic of a class J1 war baby! Notice the heavy rods and “union pacific” style pilot.I am offering my assistant to this great and glorious undertaking! All I can offer is some my limited knowledge about N & W Steam, if you have any questions feel free to PM me or Email me!andyj@wythenet.com Andy J Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class – image 11 http://www.blueridgerails.com/

RE: Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class

Nice post. I didn't learn anything personally, but you made some points that I have tried to make on here. For example the "Twelve Hundreds". I always speak of them in that way. I rarely say Big Boy. I say, "The 4000's". Or like the 3985, because it is the only Challenger running, I just say, "When is the 3900 headed this way this summer dad?".I would be willing to say that the reason some Class A's like the 1218 had the solid cast pilot, just like the J's had or have, were because they were damaged at one point, and it was easier to replace the old horizontal "strap pilot". I will have my hand on the throttle of a K-36 very soon!

RE: Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class

Thanks for all the information and help. One thing I must say is that I'm definitely NOT a N&W locomotive expert, or any kind of locomotive expert for that matter. I personally saw the 1218 once and thought it was a cool looking locomotive, and I made a 3D model of it before I even had MSTS. I bought the game a couple of months ago, and thought it would be cool to have the 1218 in the game, so I began the process of converting it. During that time, I started looking for photographs of it for reference, and started finding all these other interesting looking locomotives from N&W, and just started modeling them for use in the game. I know that engines like the 1100 weren't the typical M class locomotives, and that's one reason why I modeled it, I'm just looking for interesting locomotives. I probably will need help with the .eng files, because as I said, I know virtually NOTHING about these locomotives other than the way they look. Anyway, I hope I don't get too much hate mail for posting inaccurate locomotives, becase I really am a novice and any help is appreciated!!

RE: Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class

Andy,Actually the pilots that the N&W and the Pennsy used aren't boiler tubes. They are just 1/4" bar stock "straps" running across...that's all they really are. Un-like the usual boiler tubes that are crimped (is that a word?!) at each end and then riveted on...Why don't you come on down to Chama again sometime? I will probably be working there all next summer and maybe into the fall too.I love it down there. I wouldn't have it any other way.Kevin Bush

I beg to differ!!!!!!Notice the pilot on the Norfolk and Western class "G" 2-8-0!!http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=55443They all are like that, all the ones I have ever seen anyway!I plan on returning to Chama and Durango as soon as money and responsbility allows, Distance is the main factor, I live in the mountains of Virginia, and with a family of 4 it will take a signifiagant amount of $$$$$$BlackHawk, no one was giving you beef!! I just want to help in anyway I can, alas, I dont know much about the editors and such in MSTS but I do know a bit about N & W Steam. the locomotive is not incorrect, it is just an oddball! And we ALL KNOW, Odd balls need love too!! Andy J Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class – image 17 http://www.blueridgerails.com/

RE: Pics of the N&W M2 Class and J class

As far as the solid pilots of the A's, after the rebuilding program in the late 40's, all A's were equiped with solid pilots. As mentioned, the main reason was for "deflecting" anything that might be in the tracks. As for the Y-6's not receiving them, keep in mind that the A's were designed as fast freight engines while the Y's were designed for slow moving freights. The pilots ability to deflect objects in the way, really comes into play when traveling at a high rate of speed. A locomotive traveling at 20 mph hitting a car, the pilot is not going to make much difference; however, a locomotive traveling at 60, it could mean the diffference between staying on the rails and upright, or derailing and causing serious damage.Mykel

Those are excelent Norfolk steamers. And they were your first project? From what I've heard steam engines are the most chalenging, i'm not quite ready for that yet. Good job, BTW, it looks like you have teh cylinders open in your pics. You get more power when they're closed, but I think screenshots look cooler when they are open and the engine is surrounded by steam.
