It seems every time I make any progress on this loco, I run into the infamous UID 20000000 error. So I end up leaving it to sit and gather dust. Well, this is the third, maybe fourth try. I rebuilt everything over, trying any different techniques I could think of. I did some individual polygon modeling and even individual point modeling (creating a primitive and changing all the points from a set of coordinates). So far, it's working. Now comes the hard part--getting it to load with the handrails and bogies. I'm still working on those. I'll get there eventually--if not soon, then later! Here's a few progress shots.
Dave

I've never had the UID 20000000 error... yet.But I do loose some locos in corrupted saves now and then. /JonatanSteam rules!

RE: Air Force MRS1 in the works

Dave,Something tells me your problems with the UID error are due to the fact that your model is, well, way too detailed. You mention 'even doing individual point modeling' - but that's the way most models for this sim are actually created! Otherwise, unless you're specifically trying to make a near-render-quality model, you have to take a lot of shortcuts, whereas using tools like lofts, extrudes and other deformers is a quick way to go overboard in terms of polygon count.A few examples on your model - the raised ridges around the numberboards are totally unnecessary, since they could be represented with shading on the textures, and it's a similar story with the corners of the main body of the engine. It appears you applied a small-radius fillet with a subdivision of at least 2, whereas most models would just have this as a square corner with highlighting/shading done in the textures to make it appear rounded. MLT's freeware Dash 9 features an excellent example of this on its nose. Your handrail posts appear to be to complex as well. Even the hatches on the roof and louvers on the sides of your diesel are questionable because they may be in low enough relief to be textured instead. And when you do add the handrails, you'll want to use a smoothed cylinder with no more than 4 or 5 sides - it should still look fine despite not really being round.Individual point modeling, as you call it, is definitely a good way to model using as few polygons as possible. It just takes some planning beforehand to make sure you give yourself enough segments to work with! The model looks great, but like I said, I think a few concessions need to be made in order to keep this from being a 20,000-poly model that brings peoples' machines to 5 FPS!Alex StroshaneAir Force MRS1 in the works – image 19

Faux rounded edges only look good to a point. On the RSD15 I rounded everything that needed to be rounded off, and I'm glad I did it. Does the model run right to the poly limit? Yes, but with the small number of overall textures used, it runs just as well if not better than nearly anything else. There is a limit to what good texture work can do and once you get into trucks and edges, it shows.Air Force MRS1 in the works – image 21"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. Excuse me for asking, but what's an MRS-1? I've heard a lot about repaints of it lately but before I download it I'd like to know what it is. I've got the PS2 game James Bond: Agent Under Fire and i think there's a rocket launcher called the MRS-1. If so, it was appropriate for the Air Force and Army to have MRS-1's on their trains. Looks like the loco is doing well anyway.-Andy the LRC lover

RE: Air Force MRS1 in the works

Actually, this particular version is modeled on Alaska Railroad #1718. In a previous life, it was owned by the Navy. ARR later attained it and offered it's use to the Air Force to pull the Air Force ALCOP train (ALternate COmmand Post). To meet Air Force specifications, the locomotive was modified--mainly on the undercarriage. And even though the locomotive was used by the Air Force, it retained its Alaska Railroad paint scheme. Seems the Air Force thought it would be easier to hide the command post that way--even if the command post car was a converted coach with steel plates welded over the windows and a multitude of antennas on the roof!!!Dave
