I have the 1.1 Patch on it, but I get to Java on the Marias Pass and I have 11% of coal left and I can Stop out side of Essex and I can't make it up the hills.Any Suggestions would be nice. Been working on this activity to upload on trainsim for days.Mauser mit Dem Mauser.

RE: Big Boy Problem

44 car haul.Running the whole route but wind up with 11% of coal left at Java. I end up climbing parts of the mountain and I end up stopping at full power, then I start going backwards and I am driving a Big Boy plus a Challenger. I have version 1.1 on the UP steam pack. What do I need to do to get this train all the way to the other end of the route (Shelby). I have ignored all speed limits but I still end up coming to a stop.
BTW: yes, Mauser as in Mauser Werke. I do own a KAR98K 1939 from the orginal Mauser Factory.Mauser mit Dem Mauser.

Asuming you're running with the DEFAILT Marias Pass you could hook up as many locos as you please and still not make it! Those grades are the most impossible of the impossible ones./JonatanSteam rules!

RE: Big Boy Problem

Mauser,A 44 car train was a usual train on Track 1 and 2 of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie Wyoming in the 1940's and 50's. Track 1 and 2 almost always required double heading. Usually a 3900 or 3800, and a 4000. The usual speed of a consist like this would have been about 25 to 35mph. The reason I mention Sherman Hill is because that is a 1% and only in some places 1 1/2% grades. Marias pass is quite a bit steeper in some places. Big Boys have stalled in the past on Sherman Hill, that's only because the guy weighing the train back in the yard over estimated the locomotive. It sounds like you are stalling...you said you end up stopping at absolute max power. Sanders on right?! If you want to get that train over the hill, forget NALW's pack. Get the Big Boy update in the FL. Look under "Steam Locomotives". And look for the latest thing on the Big Boy, download it. It runs much more realistically. Less slipping, more powerful. The real 4000's (big boys) were VERY sure footed, and basically could start any damned train in the world! I have talked to numerous old UP engineers that ran them. They loved them. They could be going up Sherman hill wide open, 35mph, water leaking on the front end coming off the injector with the water dripping all over the rails, and still just cruise right on up there.I got a long cab ride in 3985 one time too in 2000 on a UPHS fan trip. I rode the cab for almost a full hour. Run-by's and all. I rode behind the fireman, and even fired a little. That is a pretty slippery locomotive. I always thought they held their ground pretty well too, and they do, but compared to the big boys, they are very slippery. I could feel it doing quarter slips acouple times, right up through the seat. It's amazing what you can feel through the seat and the floor of those things. Feel the vibrations while grasping the throttle or johnson bar, feel it through your feet, arm leaning on the armrest, the seat, and listen to it pound....Yeah one of these day's ill pick up a K-98. Probably one imported from Russia or something. But first I want an M1 Garand!

RE: Big Boy Problem

Well I have the 1.1 Patch. I am not to sure if that is the highest. When I was 7 years old and older My family took rail-fan runs. One was the 1218 NF&S and the 611J. Awsome sight. My Mom also has a picture of me behind the 8444.Yes I am stalling. Sanders on and have the hammer down. I am going to look for the 3.1 version of the route. I also run out of coal about the 1/3 of the way (java) Is this accurate or does this mean I need a better version?I got my M-1 Garand through CMP. I started out when i was 19 and got it when I was 20. All the hopes and stuff I had to jump through to get it. Second to the last thing I had to do was do a John C. Garand Match. I did it with my Mauser and scored a 321 out of 500. After my tax returns came back, I sent them back to the Government and 4 Weeks later a Garand showed up at my door. Took it out to the next match and shot a 360. Now I am 21 with 11 rifles, and one of them is my Mauser. What is funny is I own more Lee Enfields than I do Mausers. Mauser mit Dem Mauser.

RE: Big Boy Problem

Yeah you really just need a place to stop for coal! Someone needs to do sherman hill for this!Wow man. I am 17 now. Want to get a Garand from CMP also. A service grade one would be nice. I also want an Enfield No.4 Mk.1 if I can get a hold of a decent one for $500 or less. My dad insures a guy that collects Enfields, and other British firearms. Including Sten guns. He also has a Bren gun, and a water cooled .30 calibre.I will die happy if I can have a Garand, Enfield, and K98. Maybe a couple other's in there too! M1903 perhaps.Good luck getting up those grades! Yep, most men like either Trains, Planes, Guns, Tanks, Cars, and ships! Me...I like them all! Mostly steam though.Kevin Bush,

RE: Big Boy Problem

We'll I can die happy for you twice over.NO2A Ishapore (Indian version of the No.1 MKIII but in .308)
No. 4 MK1/2 on a 1941 Reciever.
No.5 Jungle Enfield
1917 P. Endystone Enfield 11-1918.I paid $250.00 for my No.4 that came with a spike bayonet. You don't have to pay $500 for a Lee Enfield only if it is a No.5 WWII Enfield or a P-17 Eddystone (Which I only paid $430 for it)You can pick up Russian Captured Mausers for under $250. Get the 1938s to 1943s. Those weren't built in a hurry.I also have a K-31 Rubbin, More accuate than my Garand. (that is even with a quater size grouping with 16 shots with the Garand)A CETME and his brother the H&K G3.And one Commy gun. A Mosin M-44.Rifles I want: SA M1A Pre Ban. Another M-1, a Carbine, 1903, A3, and A4 Springfields, CZ Mauser, 1888 Mauser Commision, and a KAR98aMauser mit Dem Mauser.

RE: Big Boy Problem

I found a site "AIM Surplus" that has Russian Captured Mausers, and Enfields for under $300. I have to turn 18 first, and get an FFL.You sound like a damned good shot! How much kick does a Garand really have with that gas trap? Do you have to tuck that baby in as much as the Mauser or the Enfield? I shot a Turkish Mauser once, that thing was brutal man! I wasn't ready for it At-ALL! 8mm, re-loaded with 240 grains. One of the Chama shop crewmans.Interesting bit about the 1903. Theres a shop near my house here that has a Remington copy of the Springfield. I was surprised. I walked in and it caught my eye. I immediately assumed it to be a Springfield. But it was way to pricy for that anyway. Almost $2000. Why bye that anyway while I can get a REAL Springfield from CMP for $400.About a Garand from the CMP. I have seen and held a service grade M1 from the CMP before. A guy had 4 of them. He let me open the box! It was beautiful. It had a lot of character what with all the little nicks and dings in the wood...and the wood had a nice glossy, oily finish. He also showed me his Colt 1917 revolver, all matching numbers, and his Enfield which I carried up to his room for him in the hotel. The Enfield was just beautiful, but he said needed a new stock. What do you recommend I do Mr. Mauser? For a first weapon. CMP Garand? Service Grade? Rack Grade...replace the barrel? Or go with a Mauser? How about an MG42 with the Lafette mount tripod and optical site?! HA!Back Channel me too. I want you to give me a jingle sometime so we can talk more about some of this BS!Later,Kevin Bush,

RE: Big Boy Problem

If I were you, I would get the Mauser KAR98K. Not to sound a little biased, but the ammo is very cheap, but you have to clean your rifle everytime you shoot it to prevent rust. All good riflemen do this to their weapons anyways. Anyone can use it, the rifle was made to be idiot proof, plus very easy to disassemble. Plus if you get a bad round, the bolt won't blow back in your face like some Enfields can do.When you go up for CMP you have to shoot a CMP sanctioned match and get a certificate. I did mine with my Mauser and did fairly well. Considering I was using a British DPM jacket as a shooting jacket and a blue camping mat as a shooters mat. I was about as cheap of a shooter as they come.Get the Mauser, the Garands will always be around, plus you can work out your shoulder with the 8mm. The highest grain I have shoot was 196 gr. Turk 7.92X57MM. Now I can stick anything in my shoulder and be ready for the kick. But I bet that 240 was a mule. That is close to Armour Piercing ammo. The Garand doesn't kick to bad. The walnut stock plus the gas trap help with the recoil. Downside with all that the rifle weighs a lot. Mauser mit Dem Mauser.

Garand rule: dump 8 through the block.

Big Boy Problem – image 12

Hi,I think it's impossible to ride from Whitefish to Shelby. The Bigboy is very hungry and thirsty. Going up the hill she consumes nearly 20 tons of coal in one hour. Marias pass 3.1 is better but still impossible.
There is no possibility to get coal and/or water during the trip.Cheerio, Jan.

Big Boy Problem – image 13

Í was wrong. It can be done on Maria's 3.1. I used the 1.1 patch, 19 oil cars and a caboose. 2702.26 ton(US),loco included. No problem at all. Careful handling reverser and regulator and I didn't run out of coal and water.Jan.
