Creating a Locomotive in TSM? – image 1

Are the creations done with a plan that has dimensions on it??Where does one find these plans??Yes I am a newbie -- I tried the search function on the forums using what is suppose to be a AND function for 'Locomotive Plan' (without the ' ) it don't work like a logical AND it is more like a NAND...I am acquatinted with CAD and your work from drawings -- but I have been unable to find anything relating to dimensions of MSTS locomotives and other type creations but it says that it will take care of most of that -- does that mean i can just draw something an it will do the scaling ???thanks in advance,Warren M.

RE: Creating a Locomotive in TSM??

While a dimensioned drawing is nice, it isn't always necessary. You can use any bmp file, even a photograph. Open the View menu and use Scale to set the parameters. The trick is to know at least one dimension. Use the longest dimension you can get, preferrably overall length (coupler face to coupler face). The longer the dimension, the more accurate the scale will be.Another trick is to copy the scale from one view to another. If you have the side view scaled properly, then you can use that scale for all other views (provided the backgrounds are all from the same drawing). One other tip...I have never been able to get good results with the cross section function they show in the tutorials. Use primitive shapes and the point function instead. With the point function you can massage the primitives into almost any shape you need.Hope that helps some.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

Hi Warren...LOL.. I just posted this in the above thread... This book is perfect for the task... Also - Model Railroad magazines are a good source for plans... I prefer to model from accurate plans... Makes the model building like a 3D "connect the dots".... Good Luck !!! Just an FYI: I recently purchased a book with hundred's of US Steam locomotive plans in it... Nice sized plans with locomotives of all different types... From a little Shay to a Big Boy... If you haven't seen it - you may want to take a look... I already have my eye on a few... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0890240019/qid=1100713724/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl14/103-2870601-1936652?v=glance&s=books&n=507846They also have one for diesels that I have not purchased yet...Also - this site is an invaluable resource for anyone building anything for MSTS...http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/Regards,
Scott

There is an import tool for it built in. The bit map can be rescaled so that the dimensions are correct - It's all built in.

I believe it's in the view mode - a top pull down menu and in it there is a load command. You click on what view you want it to go into and when you hit load it goes into that perspective IE: top,front/back,side. I am at work and do not have the program in front of me. Its the 3rd or 4th pull down menu from the left.
