I am having troulbe and am wondering if anyone can help me. I have modding experience in other games (mainly Command and Conquer Generals), but I am having problems with MSTS. I have built a model of a N&W Locomotive, and have copied the cab view and sound folders from the Scotsman to a 1218 folder. I have converted my model to a .s file, and have the .ace texture (512x512), and the .sd file, but I am having problems with the .eng file. I get some sort of error message when the game starts up, and my locomotive isn't in the locomotive menu. I have tried everything I know how to do, and have worked for hours and still I don't have this cursed thing in the game. I have even resorted to just creating a box and trying to stick it in the game, still the same error with the .eng. If there is anyone who has a good tutorial or some sort of step by step instructions to importing into MSTS please let me know. Although I have already looked at 2 or 3 tutorials with absolutely NO success, maybe someone has some idea of what I am doing wrong. I am on the verge of taking my version of MSTS outside and burning it. PLEASE HELP! BTW, I am attaching a picture of the locomotive if anyone wants to look at it.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

here is a copy of the .eng file. It is basically taken straight from the scotsman .eng file, so I know that a lot of the values and stats and everything don't match up with the 1218, but my goal is to simply get the locomotive in the game, THEN I will be able to go in and change around all the measurements and everything.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Well, I am officially sick and tired of messing around with this stupid thing. I've uninstalled MSTS and threw it in the trash can. After sitting here wasting 4 hours of my life trying to get this thing in the game, I'm basically still in the same place I was when I started. Modding this crap just isn't worth the frustration, so if anyone wants this model you're free to have it, I'm sick of screwing with the damn thing.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Have you copied the Scotsman cab and sound folders into your 1218 folder? Beer is not a matter of life and death. It is much more serious than that.

Impressive!Since folks are going to need to know so that they can help you, what modleing program are you using? That will help the appropriate gurus troubleshoot when they see this thread.Take care,Henry

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Of course. This model was made using g-max. And to answer the other question, yes, I copied both the sound and cab view folders to my new folder. Thanks for the help so far.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Ok, well, I officially hate you people (just kidding). You've got it in the game and it looks great, meanwhile my freaking blood pressure is shooting through the roof just trying to do SOMETHING without getting an error message. My copy of MSTS is already in the trash, I'm sick of messing with it so again, anyone who wants my model can have it, I just want it off my damn computer.

Hey man don't give up. I got P***ed off several times when I first started making models. Everyone has problems like this with MSTS, we must work around it's limitations. You have a great looking locomotive, there is nothing wrong with it. The errors you have been getting may be a simple file name issue in the .eng file. What exactly does the error say?C h r i sModelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive – image 15

Dude, no reason to get mad. The SLW on will probably be payware so for those who don't want to buy the 1218, yours will be perfect! I will probably wind up getting both. Keep it up man. You are doing one hell of a job and you've come to far to just waste a project like this one.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Hey blackhawk2000,
Your model looks pretty good! Don't give up yet. Besides, the SLW project is more focused on the A's as they appreared around 1950. As for your problem, is it just that it is not showing up in the game menu? or are you getting a UID error? Also, if you have conbuilder, this program has a test in it that you can run and it will report some errors that would cause problems, especially with cab views and sound file problems.Scott,
Presently engine 1 is about 6700 poly's while engine 2 is around 16,000 poly's. Keep in mind that hidden and unseen faces have not been deleted yet as she is still being painted. Once painted and these faces eliminated, it should drop the poly count to around 6000 and a little more than 14,000. Then we will figure out where to go from there in detail vs poly count. Mykel

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Erik / MykelThat is one slick hawg... I am building my first model in 3DC - nothing on your scale... 2-6-2 Prairie and Tender - from 1899... I have about 7600 on the engine and around 3500 for the tender... I was just trying to get a feel for what it takes for something like yours... I had heard somewhere that MSTS a limit of around 10K... LOL - guess that was wrong...Anyway - thanks for the info...Regards,

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Well, I'm not really sure what a UID error is, but here's what happens: I start up the game, and after the loading screen finishes, I get an error message that says something like "error reading train database" or something, and it lists the .eng file. I have successfully modded other games, but none of them have reached the level of frustration I have experienced working with this game. My original plan was to make around 3 or 4 Norfolk and Western steam locos and release them in 1 pack for download, but I'm so aggravated at this thing right now I just really don't know what to do.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Ok. I may have the answer to your problem. A train database error means that MSTS cannot locate the specified eng file in the engine folder. It does not mean you have a faulty eng file. What did you use to make the consist? The AE or Conbuilder. If the latter what version? Here is the beginning of a consist fileSIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0D0t______Train (
TrainCfg ( "Duke of Gloster"
Name ( "Britannia express" )
Serial ( 3 )
MaxVelocity ( 51.40960 0.27237 )
NextWagonUID ( 22 )
Durability ( 1.00000 )
Engine (
UiD ( 9 )
EngineData ( 70000 70000 )
)
Wagon (
WagonData ( 70000tend 70000 )
UiD ( 10 )
)Note the two lines called EngineData and WagonData. These are what MSTS uses to determine what is supposed to be where. Within the brackets are two sets of data, the first is the eng or wag file name and the second is the folder name.Open your consist file for the 1218 using wordpad and make sure that the info inside the brackets is exactly the same as you have in your trainset folder.Beer is not a matter of life and death. It is much more serious than that.

There is no reason for you to get all upset over this. There is plenty of room for two of these engines on here, Lord knows there is at least two of everything around MSTS.
I dont think your model looks like a turd, but if you think it does....whatever.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

I know, I'm really just clowning around. I wrote that message on a night when I was about to pull my hair out trying to get my 1218 into the game. I've followed every single tutorial I can find to try to get it into the game, and I get the same result EVERY time; a message that says something like "error reading train database" or something, and it lists the .eng file. There is only going to be one of these locos, not because I'm upset or anything, but because my feeble brain can't comprehend how to get this thing from gmax into the game. BTW, for anyone who wants to know, my loco is at about 5600 polys.

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Hi Blackhawk... Yeah - kinda avoided discussing your stuff before because you did seem a little upset... One thing about MSTS is that is seems to be a bit of an unfinnished product and it has many issues we all have to find a way to work around... I am very new to 3D Modeling and have had to work hard to evercome each step of the modeling process... First thing I would try - is can you get your shape loaded into Shape File Viewer... http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/sviewr.html This should tell you whether your shape is - or is not - in the correct format for MSTS... Eliminates any of the problems that could occur in your config files... Awesome program.... Then there are numerous tutorials available at the site listed below... This is a great site with a wealth of helpful information... They even have a complete tutorial on building an engine with GMAX... http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/index.html You may just want to review the process and make sure you have all the bases covered... I use 3D Canvas - so I really can't be much help with that... With your POLY count - you will make you locomotive available to many many more people.. With POLY counts above 10K - you need some serious hardware to make it run well... I have a high end machine - and the numbers quoted above have me concerened... Don't give up - and - you may find MSTS very enjoyable !!!Regards,
Scott

>viewer?? I just need to know if it's my model that's
>screwed up or if I'm just wrecking the .eng file?? From my experience, shape viewer shows the engine if all of the .ace files are correctly named so that the shape file understands them. Your error is probably one dealing with how you have the .eng file. I can't help you with the eng file but I'll tell you two things. First, three of the four errors I've had like the one you have were involving headlights (The fourth involved a consist error). Second, these errors are EXTREMELY annoying, you're not the only one who wants to trash MSTS when an engine doesn't work...

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Hi Blackhawk...Yep - I'm with Northshore... What we just proved is that your shape file should be in a valid format... That means you can totally focus on your "eng" file... One little typo in that file can keep you locomotive from working... The lighting section - as pointed out above - can be especially critical... If the number of lights listed - doesn't match the actual number of light lines - the sim can crash... LOL... Go figure...Maybe grab the default Scottman "eng" and "sd" file... You will need to go through and change out any references for your shapes... Sometimes it is best to go back to square one... These files can be very finicky..Regards,
Scott

Blackhawk,

Did you change the ".sd" file too ??? The shape is listed inside that file as well... Also - I am not sure if it matters but I always name my ".s" ".sd" and ".eng" file with the same prefix...myproject.s
myproject.sd
myproject.engAND I also name the first line of the ".eng" file the same...Wagon ( myprojectOnce again - I am new to modeling - so take my suggestions with a grain of salt... This things seem to work for me...Good luck...Regards,

RE: Modelling N&W Class A 1218 Steam Locomotive

Yes, I've actually done the same thing. My file names are 1218.s, 1218.sd, 1218.ace, and 1218.eng. And I have edited the .sd file to let it know that the shape file is 1218.s. I have followed tutorial after tutorial step by step, and I always end up with that infuriating error message every single time, yet I have downloaded other folks' locos and they work fine. I'm just at the end of my rope here.
