Hi all,
I've been working on this piece for a while, and I got it working in MSTS (it's a NYC K-11 Pacific). However, I forgot to back up a copy before I attached all the parts in groups, and now I can't do animation. I used the "attach" command to group the polys together (not the "group" command), but now I can't figure out a way to break the groups back into their original components. In the gmax picture, you can see I "attached" the rods together (they're all the some color), so is there a way to "unnattach" the whole rod assembly back into the individual rods? I've been toying around with various functions like the "break" command, but none seem to work. Can someone point me in the right direction?Have a nice day

There is only one way to detatch everything and it's a very time consuming effort. You have to select all the faces of one selected object, like one wheel for instance, then click the "detatch" button. Be VERY carefull when doing this as other faces might follow along too.Edit: She sure looks handsome, looking foreward to her. A tip tho, select the faces on the cylinders and add a smooth modifier to remove that shading./JonatanSteam rules!

Gentle reminder...always remember to do incremental saves during development so you can recover from mistakes made early on with so much recovery work.I usually have between 15 to 30 incremental save files on any of my projects... It's only disk space... It's so much easier to fall back a step or two...Unattaching parts in gmax – image 10

RE: Unattaching parts in gmax

Although I'm using TSM, you can get yourself into the same problem. I ussually just leave everything seperate until I'm nearly done with the model, and then I save the model under a new name and start joing the parts together. The original file still contains all the original pieces that can easily be changed.Ted Curphey

I save with a _A at the end of the filename, _B with the next save and so on. This ensures that I have a series of backups, but no more than 26 clogging up my hard drive at any given time.Unattaching parts in gmax – image 17"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. You're going to have to detach each "element" individually. Don't do it on the 'face' level. Elements in Max are whole objects assuming you have welded all the vertices. Make sure you have done that by selecting all the objects, throw an edit mesh modifier on it, go to the vertex level, select all, then set your weld threshold to .001, weld selected then start detaching by element. Once you have done that right click in the modifier stack and select 'collapse all'....=|GoldenPig
