I've downloaded the SD-24 repaint by Charley Hill (cbq_505.zip, thank you, Mr. Hill), and ran it through my own paint shop to bring it more in line with CB&Q painting practices. I got most of it tuned the way I'd like it to be, except I could not locate the color patch for the fuel tank breather pipe (green arrow, below). What patch controls the color for the breather pipe? Also, at least on CB&Q SD-24's, there are no vents on THIS side of the loco, below the running boards (walkway). I could not see a way to remove them, because it appears to me that both sides use the same texture mapping. Is this correct?A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 1 A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 2

Paint all the black stuff red (incrementally) and you'll eventually find it!

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

You're right, Chuck! My error and I should have foreseen that part should have a separate mapping. Well, it's easy to correct that one. Let me know of an address to where I can send the correct shape and I'll do it (I hate imperfections like this one!)

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Thanks, Carlos. I fooled around for a while, trying to locate the chip, and found that it's tied to the handrails. Since the CB&Q painted the handrails black, this won't work. I appreciate the new shape and mapping. I would suppose the revised .s file ought to be made available to the rest of the MSTS community. It wasn't a complete waste of time, trying to locate the chip, because I also found a way to make the white stripe across the pilot area. Although, this makes it more obvious that the MU hoses are placed a bit too high, or maybe the real ones were too low..You can send it to me at cz@cox-internet.com. RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Hello Chuck!
I see those changes and thank you for catching them. Wish I had the picture of the 507 like you did.Especially the white stripe on the pilot; I never could find that rascal. Contact me at chill4@neb.rr.com and maybe we can come up with an update for the library for everyone. Heck, the way your changes look, maybe we should use your paint job!!It looks really nice. BTW, what font did you use for your numbers? (Just checking to see if I had the right one).

Here is what I have come up with so far. Chuck, let me know if something else needs done. Carlos, thanks for the quick response. Once we get this ironed out, I will upload the complete model again, to let people replace the entire file.

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Thanks again, Carlos. The shapes arrived here, and I installed them. I was so busy adjusting textures, that I didn't even pay attention to the fact that I lost the Mars light. As I was composing my message to you about this, the Mars light version arrived in my mailbox. Such service!Chaz, the SD-24 is undergoing a few more changes, then I can shoot you a copy. I'm working on some depth for the "knuckle buster" door latches. You can see my early attempt on the door below the cab. As for the font, I'm using a Burlington style font, which I can mail to you, along with a Zephyr font, if you want them. The Burlington style font is not the one that is available on the internet, but something I acquired somewhere along the line. I don't remember where it came from.I have one small error, but it's not too visible, so I won't complain about it. When I put the white stripe on the pilot, the top of the drop step also picked up the white color. But since the step doesn't drop down anyway, I'll leave it alone. For anyone wondering, the CB&Q SD-24's were delivered with drop steps, but were quickly removed. Early photos of the SD-24's show a drop step, but they were gone by the time I started shooting pictures, around 1963.A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 8

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Thanks for all your help Chuck! Maybe what's best would be for me to let you finish your work and just send a copy of the model to me; then either one of us can upload a copy to the f/l for people who want the updated version. It would be OK to go ahead and leave the 507 on it, that way people can either get rid of my 505 or keep it as an alternate engine. As for the Burlington font, I would indeed like to have the fonts as they seem a little more correct than the ones I have gotten. Just let me know if there is anything you need from me.

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Bradley is correct, the pictures are shot in a rather complex marriage of three programs: MSTS, MSTStoPOV conversion (a Wayne Campbell invention), and POVRAY (http://www.povray.org/). In fact, Wayne had to send me an adjusted executable to handle the SD-24, which was giving me errors when I first tried it. Right now the program only works with one MSTS tile, so it’s not ready for prime time yet.Carlos, I need more mapping help, please. I want to add builder’s and trust plates on the step plate behind the cab, but once again, I cannot locate the mapping. This time, I’m hoping it’s not a little chip, or this will not work.A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 14

I've been looking for a pic of that builder's plate all over the net and nothing... About the vents, I think almost all SD's got them only on the right side (shame on me)!

Carlos
For a shot of the builders plate look at Fallen Flags under Rock Island(probably faster than my trying to dig through my digital shots from IRM)
Oddly enough I tried to install the builders plate on the M&StL SD7 on the maintex file but can't seem to find exactly where it's mapped to(it'd be about the same location as the 24 prototype wise) could you post a pic of about where on that texture to look?
ThanksGary S

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Gary, on the maintex.ace, look for four small vents, all by themselves. Below is part of the maintex.ace for the CB&Q SD-7. Unfortunately, you cannot place anything there that is legible, or it gets reversed. The CB&Q placed the road number there, and you can see in the second pix that this doesn't work. However, I'm sure that Carlos will come up with a solution. He always does.A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 21A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 22

I can invert the map, but the easiest solution is to mirror the numbers directly on the texture. We use to do that in MS Flight Simulator and it always works, but if the number is on both sides then it won't work, of course. Perhaps the best solution is to re-map everything.

That's what I did to get the F (for Front) on the frame of the SD-24, but the SD-7 needs the running board vents removed on the fireman's side anyway, so yes, a bit of re-mapping is in order.A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 23

Gary:
I think it's about the same zone as the SD24. Have you tried to draw something on that zone? A good way to find out where is what is to use a pic with a numbered grid, then paste it as a transparent selection into the pic we are changing.

I really like the sound of a MSTS to POV Ray conversion program. That would really make some sweet screenshots.

Not difficult, since I already got the EMD trucks (C1 type) and the mars light. My question is always the same: Who's gonna paint it?

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Charley, are you sure that's a SD18? The front hood looks like if it's straight (even considering the angle the photo was taken) and it doesn't seem to have the usual grid on the radiator. Forgive me if I'm wrong and besides I'm not an expert about locos, but I just wanted to point out those details. There are so many hybrid versions of EMD's out there...

Correct the 847 posted above is NOT an SD18. The 851 is though. Also a little side note, one B&LE SD18 had a very different paint scheme than the rest of the fleet for a few years. #853 from the Fallen Flags site.

RE: A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gom

Chaz, a couple of things to look at, if you’re thinking of tackling the BLE SD-18’s. Apparently, they had a shield over the cab heater intake on the engineer’s side (yellow arrow, pix below)..Second, the apparent spotting feature between a SD-9 and a SD-18 is the vented boxes and running boards, behind the cab, at the cab floor level, (blue arrow and box in the pix below). That box is not there on the SD-18.Third, I have no explanation of the headlight, except it looks like a Mars or Gyralight housing (green arrow).Red arrow, I believe, points I believe to a sand filler hatch. The BLE #847 is an SD-9, but still has potential. Then again, you have to take into account the era you are portraying, notice that the footboards are missing.I don’t know the exact date that footboards on the pilot were legal to remove.A Question About SD-24 Paint Mapping for Carlos Gomes – image 34
