I just uploaded a set of physics files to model equipment used by Santa Fe to serve the York Canyon coal mine on the Raton Pass route. The mines can be found south of Raton, on a branch line headed west (Raton Pass Route file is raton2.zip by Bob Wirth). The uploaded file includes version 4.7 physics for two kinds of coal cars (one for late 70s early 80s, and Bethgons for late 1990s and early 2000s), SD26, SD39, SD40-2(396,500 pound version), C30-7, and SF30C. In addition to locomotives in this physics package, BNSF CW44-9 and SD70Mac units can be used to work the coal trains.

RE: Santa Fe V4.7 files for York Canyon coal

I found a significant error in the SD40-2 file (the adhesion line was not V4.7, but V4.5), and I uplaoded a new replacement file which also includes a V4.7 CW44-9. If you want to correct the error, replace the adhesion line in the SD40-2 file with:
Adheasion ( 0.25 0.53 2.0 0 )
or wait for the replacement file which should be available tomorrow.
The V4.5 line used a different method to compensate for transmission efficiency, which is now more accurately modeled in V4.7 with direct power at the rail computation. If the V4.5 line is used, then the transmission loss will be an excessive hit on performance.
Sorry for the mistake,
Bob Boudoin

RE: Santa Fe V4.7 files for York Canyon coal

Hi Bob:Did I miss a special bulletin or something? 4.6 physics really makes the game for me, and I think more realistic braking would be even better. And then, while cruising through the file library I stumble across physics 4.7! This is big news!! I REALLY appreciate these files - but I'm a mostly boxcar, tank car, container and covered hopper railroader with 1.2% grades at best - with a slew of GP38's and GP30's in addition to the usual SD's. (OK, so every once in a while a string of Dash-9s goes by).Do you have a set of generic wag files, or should I just copy something from your York Canyon hoppers and modify it with fcalc to suit each car? Is there a post somewhere outlining what you've done to improve 4.6 to 4.7? I'm not asking for you to create anything special, but if you've got more 4.7 files, I would like to have the link!!!! In any case, thanks a bunch - lots of folks appreciate your work - and I'm sure one of them.Mark

RE: Santa Fe V4.7 files for York Canyon coal

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the nice comments!! I do have quite a bit of stuff done in V4.7, but have not yet uploaded much to the library. I do have GP38-2 and GP30 files completed. I plan to do some sample .wag files also.
V4.7 does a number of things, including:
1) Uses Joe Realmuto's version 2.0 of FCalc
2) Uses much more realistic brake settings
and for locomotives:
3) Uses direct power at the rail calculations to apply transmission efficiency to power, instead of using 1.8 in the adhesion line. This should give more realistic pull, and also improve time to speed correlations. This will allow the more efficient SD70 (88%) to distinguish from a less efficient SD7 (81.5%).
4) Eliminates the antislip line in lead locomotive units. Instead, I raise the slipping adhesion. The antislip line will still be needed on trailing units for best performance.
This last area is the reason I have not really started a release package or packages. I am not sure setting up the files with separate methods for lead and trailing units will be too complicated for most folks?
Thanks for noticing the files!!
Bob

I'll be patient. Worth the wait!I think some folks might have trouble, but the concept of a trailing unit has evolved from just hookin'-up another engine, to creating an AI engine without lights and with modified sound, so it won't idle while the lead engine runs at notch 8. It wouldn't be much more trouble (probably less trouble) to change the physics of the trailing units if you're already building an AI fleet. If Nels has the library space, and I ever finish my route and evolve to activities, I would probably try to modify and upload existing rolling stock for others to use in realistic activities. Lots of big "if"s. Canton does quite well with the concept, I think.I'm excited about the development and look forward to it!ThanksMark

RE: Santa Fe V4.7 files for York Canyon coal

Bob,Tried your new coal car wag files. I was wondering if I did something wrong, because I was descending a 2% grade on my route and I couldn't stop the train. I had 100 loaded cars (all the same, using your bethgon file), and six C44-9Ws (two in the front, two in the middle, two at the rear). The brake line was pumped up to 95psi to begin with. Could that have something to do with it? I was able to slow to about 5 mph with dynamics on full, but then the dynamics cut out and the train brake holds it at 5 mph, but doesn't slow it anymore. I did some math, and it seems that the 39.5kN max brake force should be more than adequate to slow a train on a 2% grade. I was using the formula that the force in pounds to hold a train on a grade is (weight in tons)*(20lbs)*(Grade in percent), so to hold a 129.4 ton car on a 2% grade requires a force of 5176lbs, or 23kN, so there should be plenty left over (16.5kN) to slow the train to a stop. What am I missing?Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Did you disengage the dynamic brakes? Also, the likely real problem is the .wag file. If the lighting section is followed by ))))) instead of )))), then the brakes on the wagons will not be operative.

Wow man, you must be psychic or something. It was the parenthesis. Amazing! It works now, and very realistically. 10lb set of air with dynamics keeps the train under control at around 15-17 mph, and a 20lb set brings the train to a stop very nicely. (This is all on a 2% grade.) Thanks so much for your contribution!Regards,
Mark
