After reading all the problems with the SPH pack I did some research and then applied it to the locos.According to the locomotive equipment book that I obtained while going thru the conductors course back in the 90's all the locos had a wheel diameter of 40 inches. Most of the wheel diameters that I see in the engine files are 20 inches.Way too small for a loco I feel.I applied this diameter to all the SPH2 locos and all the places where trains were stalling I didn't have a problem at all. Before the change I too experience stalled on grades that were relatively slight.I know that it's a hassle but you may want to consisder changing the wheel diameter to get better traction with the rail. The SD70 and dash 9 had a wheel diameter of 42 inches. This info was obtained from the NS Locomotive Equipment Book from the Locomotive Department Roanoke Va.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 1

RE: Locomotive Wheel Diameter

I'm not sure I understand you correctly. The lines that affect the wheel size in MSTS .eng files are WheelRadius ( 20 ). There are two of these lines, one in the wagon section, and one in the engine section. A WheelRadius ( 20 ) would equal a 40 inch diameter wheel, yes? The techdocs indicate that the number is in inches, and in the wagon section, the size is for non-driving wheels, and in the engine section, the number is the radius of the powered wheels.

RE: Locomotive Wheel Diameter

This is true. What really made me look at this was the fact that there are locos that I have that have the radius set to 42in. Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 2
