Hi,I'm having a go at tweaking the .eng files for Alexander Jamieson's MSTS South Australian 2000 Class "Jumbo" diesel railcars.I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone might know the answer to:1. The Jumbos are powered by duel six cylinder diesel engines producing 525 hp or 390 kW (2100 rpm). Does this mean the DieselEngineMaxRPM should be set at 2100?2. How do I find, or calculate or estimate the DieselEngineIdleRPM, DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort and
DieselEngineMaxRPMChangeRate?3. Can anyone give me an idea for working out what the maximum tractive effort/force (in Newtons or Pounds) should be for diesel railcars like the Jumbos? Thanks,Adam.

RE: Maximum RPM and Tractive Effort

Hi Adam,
You could set the DieselEngineMaxRPM to 2100, but this is really only going to influence the sound.
For DieselEngineIdleRPM, I would suggest 250-400 rpm.
For DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort, I would guess 15-20 mph would be quite close on these types.
For DieselEngineMaxRPMChangeRate, maybe 25-45 would be a good choice.
If you tell me how much these weigh, I can tell you the maximum tractive effort. Below 15-20 mph, these railcars are probably limited by their adhesion, which is probably about 24-25% of their weight, if they do not have modern traction enhancing technology from computer control (I would doubt they would have that in this application).
Hope this helps,
Bob

RE: Maximum RPM and Tractive Effort

Thanks heaps for the info Bob.The 2001 Class railcars weigh 68 Tonnes empty or 76 Tonnes fully loaded.
They have four axles, all driven.
Their maximum power Tractive is 1,050 horsepower.I don't believe they have modern traction enhancing technology.Hope this helps in calculating the maximum tractive effort. They always run coupled to a trailer car (known as the 2100 Class) in the form power-trailer or trailer-power-trailer.The trailer cars weigh 42 tonnes empty and 56 tonnes fully loaded.I've been told the 2001 Class have an acceleration rate of 0.9 metres per second ... but I don't know how I can use these figure in the .eng file? Thanks again,Adam.

RE: Maximum RPM and Tractive Effort

Hi Adam,
I get about 182.2kN for maximum tractive effort.
you may also want to set your friction line similiar to below:
1000.5N/m/s -0.10 1.3mph 11.231N/m/s 1.905
That should be acceptable if these don't get over 85-86 mph? It won't change much if they run slower, but might need adjustment if they get much faster. @1050 HP, I doubt higher speeds is a likelyhood.
Hope this helps,
Bob

RE: Maximum RPM and Tractive Effort

Thanks again Bob.I think their top speed is 83mph, although they are limited to much less than this on the South Australian metropoltian rail network.Using Joe Realmuto's FCalc program it has given me a friction line:
949.4N/m/s -0.10 1.0mph 16.058N/m/s 1.837 for the power cars.So these would be similar to your values then?Cheers,Adam.
