Aug-20-01, 10:28 PM (EST) "N&W K2a" Anyone able to explain how to turn this around? I've tried rotating it about its axis 180 deg. No luck. Preferably with 3dCanvasPro, but I can try 3dSM. Anyone interested in collaborating? I'm sure I could use the help. It has taken me two weeks to get to this point, although things are going a little easier now, especially with help from some of the gurus on this forum. BTW, poly count is around 1700... pretty proud of that.

oh..you could convert it into a cab foward! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-20-01, 11:43 PM (EST) 3. "RE: N&W K2a" you don't need to turn anything just move the smoke effect in the eng file I'd say just from looking at it from + to - on the y value and ... bob's your uncle When you look at the train in max left view, is the front on the left or the right shoud be +y for the front. (to the left) to rotate the mode use the autocad short cuts to rotate the whole thing about the z axis. If you have no luck I can do it for you.john Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 00:33 AM (EST) 5. "RE: N&W K2a" I thought about moving the smoke, but the engine runs in reverse, so it needs to be flipped. It does make for a nice view from the running boards if you use the "head out cab view!"Thanks for the offer to flip it. Roger, of Challenger fame, is flipping for me. What about some animation help when I get the rods built, as this is totally new ground?

Aug-21-01, 00:30 AM (EST) 4. "RE: N&W K2a" LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-01 AT 00:38 AM (EST)Not much detail as this engine was lagged and streamlined cleanly. When I add the rods and wheels I get up around 2500 polys. I plan to add injector & stoker detail under the cab, and a power reverse on the engineer's side just behind the side skirting and classification lights on the side of boiler. I already have the big poly item, which is the handrails on both sides and the handrail on the front. Not much else to add.Mike Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 01:28 AM (EST) 6. "RE: N&W K2a" A great looking loco and it's within the poly budget, nice going NW When you get to animating, I think you have enough people with experience here that you won't have any problems. The only suggestion I can make now is to widen the wheel treads a bit. The rails in TS seem a bit wide to me, but the width of the wheels should be closer to the rail width. Here's some drivers from a PRR K4, that will give you an idea of the proportions.
Keep up the good work, it's going to be a fine looking locomotive.Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-21-01, 03:10 AM (EST) 7. "RE: N&W K2a" I'll widen the wheels. Thanks. On a different note. I am working in 3dCanvasPro. Anyone have experience animating Rods? I have been getting help from guys using 3dSM and have found two challenges.1. When I export a .3dc file to .3ds format and they return it to me and I import it back to .3dc (3dCP format) the scale changes from meters to feet, making my loco smaller.
2. When I got my loco back, 3dSM had added almost 50% more faces. I went from ~1500 to ~2700! This sucks. I was hoping to ask for help animating the rods, but now I'm afraid of what the file will look like when I get it back!

Aug-21-01, 04:13 AM (EST) 8. "RE: N&W K2a" In 3D Canvas Pro, you need to rotate the model around the frame axis of the 'Main' object. You do this using the 'Shift' tool.Tim has put together some basic instructions for animation using 3D Max at http://www.trainsimfiles.com/tutorials and using these
I was experimenting with animating coupling rods last night using 3D Canvas Pro. I came up with these amandments to what Tim says:In 3D Canvas you have to select to show the animation toolbar from the top menu. Then press 'Animate', then press the next button along. There is a key frame 0, so select 8 Key Steps instead of 9. Make sure the wheelsets have there frame axis pointing along the axle centre. Make sure the frame axis of the coupling rod is pointing to where the crankpin on Wheel1 would be. Use rightclick and properties to set the angles for wheels and coupling rods for each key frame (use the button to advance one frame on the animation toolbar, then set the angles, and so on. Only one big problem. The animated wheels go round at twice the rate as equally sized bogie wheels I had on the other end of my test platform. Not so important, if the rods for both sides are to be treated as a single object, they can't be quartered. I will continue my experiments on this. Ian M.

Aug-21-01, 01:13 PM (EST) 9. "N&W K2a" Thanks for the pointer to the tutorial. On my way there next...As far as flipping, I could only get the shift-function to move forward, sideways, vertically... How do you rotate? After much playing around and many trips away from the computer I figured out to create a new object and then joined the rest of my engine to the new object's frame, then deleted the new object and renamed the new objects frame to "main". A quick tip for anyone designing a loco in 3dCP... make sure the little blue pivot arrow points forward when you start!!!!!Mike Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-22-01, 04:34 AM (EST) 10. "RE: N&W K2a" Right click on the shift tool on the left hand tools area and you can put rotation angles in for X Y or Z axis rotation. Then, when you left click on the same tool, it will apply that rotation to the selected object. (don't forget to clear the angles next time you go in with right click) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Thanks

Nov-13-01, 01:44 PM (EST) 12. "RE: N&W K2a" Funny timing that you found this post. I finally got around to working on this again this morning. I have finally gotten comfortable working with 3dCP. I have been concentrating on other things, but started work on it again today. I hope to make some progress this week. I'll keep you informed. If anyone is interested in helping with the animation or textures in 3dCP, I'd be happy to have the help.

Dec-23-01, 03:34 PM (EST) 15. "RE: N&W K2a" looks kinda like this J class 4-8-4 streamlined steam locomotive I have. the one in the pic is not mine. I have an HO one. Looking good though. can't wait to see her in colors. Good Luck with it and have a safe and Merry Christmas.

Dec-23-01, 11:51 PM (EST) 16. "RE: N&W K2a" It looks to me as if you started making the loco oriented the wrong way forward. This is a trap even with software like 3d Max, (with Max it's easily fixable). The cause of this mis-orientation can be as simple as the plan (or reference material) view showing the loco oriented the opposite direction to what it should be in the 3d prog. Your natural instinct is to copy (reproduce) what's in the plan
--- been there, done that. As I said before, it's fixable in Max, you select all the vertice points (easy) then use the Rotate Tool. You cannot simply just rotate the model, it may look oriented correctly but when processed it reverts back to its original orientation. There are other steps to be done, but I don't know how relevant they are to your 3d prog.Don't let the computer WIN! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-25-01, 11:15 AM (EST) 17. "RE: N&W K2a" This is an old, old, old thread. The only thing stopping me now is time and texturing. Mine can stand some improvement. I even have it partially animated.Mike
