Question for decapod or canvas users – image 1

after importing a VRML from PROE, i have more one object for each face of my real object.
is there a command, a way, a script to quickly merge them all into one single object...? i've tried to use the merge tool but it's quite frustrating...!! should be possible to write a script that does this...?
thanks a lot, max

Question for decapod or canvas users – image 3

tell me paul, to write a script for me is it a hard and long work, or is something of some minutes...? i really don't know
feel free to answer 'sorry i can't help you', i understand that people has something else too to do...
my situation is this: i have to merge all the object that are in a group, in a single object, with a simply click...!
if no, maybe you can instead tell me where i can find info to write a script...
a big thank paul, regards, max

There is not a built in way to do this since MERGE is only object based , not Group based. The problem is, unless you are familiar with Visual Basic and Graphics programming, I don't think the task is trivial.I've been using 3D Canvas since December of 2001 and have never needed to solve this issue, but then I "seldom" merge my objects unless I absolutely know I will never need to change them.See? I hardly merge stuff... I can barely show you 1/3 of my hierarchy I have so many individual objects...Question for decapod or canvas users – image 7Pete Willard

...of course pete, but 'cause you have each object in the hierarchy that is a real single one object in the model, but try to think what would it be if each object in the hierarchy is a single face of your model...? how could you move it, or delete...?
on a model like the one in the pic, that is a piece of bridge, it's enought to have a single object...
anyway thanks a lot, i think i use the 'manual' mode...

Ahh... I was assuming that each railing post was an object... Dummy Me. Now that I know you meant each FACE of Every Railing (4-8 sides, maybe?) was also a single object... OUCH... Yes, I can see whay a script would be the best approach... unless you also had a lot of free beer to go with it......merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
...merge a face... drink beer...
Ok, 1 railing post done and I'm "plastered"! WhooPee, Celebrate... go to sleep.Pete Willard

>Up for the challenge as always.....I had a couple of thoughts overnight and it turned out to be quite simple The script took 5 mins and was just hacked out of one of my old scripts so there is a bit of redundant code in there. To run - copy the cs file in the zip file attached to this post to your scripts folder.
Select one object in the group where you want all objects merged into one.
Run the script. However, in scripting there is no way to actually remove an object from the list, so it will look like nothing has happened.
But..
The first object in the group now contains all the geometry and the remaining objects have no points or faces.
Move the first object to another group, select the empty group and delete it.

RE: question for decapod or canvas users...

As I mentioned above - nothing appears to happen. All the objects remain, except now if you select one from the hierarchy and look at the properties, it has zero points and faces. The whole object is in the first object in the group.
