There's no accounting for taste. It's performance that counts. How did these locos do in day-to-day railroading? The D&H had some very "individualistic" designs, eh? Tim

RE: Delaware & Hudson

The third one appears to be like a poppet valve type design. The South Africans converted alot of their 4-6-2's to poppet valve design and loved them. I think those locomotives look terrible!Kevin Bush,

I will have my hand on the throttle of a K-36 very soon Mon Freunds!

RE: Delaware & Hudson

Supposedly, D&H had some of the most powerful locomotive designs ever built for their size. All these strange looking critters were compounds (there was also a triple expansion) with boiler pressures exceeding 300 psi (500 in some cases)...Unfortunately they were also unreliable maintenance nightmares.None of them, however, holds a candle to the "Horatio Allen" as far as fugliness goes...I also found a site devoted to these "glamorous creatures"...the "Allen" figures prominently.
http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/LOCOLOCO/USAhp/USAhp.htmThe D&H had some pretty "interesting" motve power. Some steamers were almost pretty and had a distinctly British look to them, with low domes and hidden piping...

That first loco, #7, looks almost European, but ugly. They also had some of the most unattractive camel backs ever built.D&H had some pretty strange ideas about power in general. I also found this page...

about using an ME-262 jet engine to boost trains over Ararat summit.I sure hope it is a "tall tale", otherwise these guys were certifiable.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Delaware & Hudson

Only if I can mount the whole Messerschmidt...We could have a series...classic jet fighter boosted cabeese. On second thought, maybe it's not a good idea. I can here it now. "You should be banned from the forum...Everyone knows the Gotha 209 had 6 more rivets on the left drag rudder!"Maybe a rocket assisted streamlined ferry would go over better. We could use the NASA logo! No, that would be met with "NASA never used their snake logo on rocket assisted streamlined ferries, they always used the old globe logo!"Besides, it would get ridiculous after a while...All those four wheel bobbers mounted with space shuttles..."D&H removed the cupola before mounting the shuttle on the first two units, it was only the third caboose that retained the crow's nest...but only until April 12th, 1972, when the shuttle wings were torn off in a grade crossing accident".Sigh...Can't win. Guess I'd better avoid the Delaware & Hudson altogether and stay out of trouble.By the way, I just found out they owned some electric lines...We could mount your pantographs on the NALW Sharks and...Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

The D&H was an incredible railroad. And a great tragedy.I worked for the NYSW signal dept during the time she was operating the D&H.I also took a nice trip from Glens Falls,NY to Grand Central on the Turbotrain during the same time period.Lots of NYSW equipment on the D&H,and lots of D&H on the NYSW.Walt Rich was in his glory then, with the old NYSW(southern div.),NYSW northern div,Staten Island RR,Rahway Valley, the LASB and operating the D&H.

RE: Delaware & Hudson

All the stuff would have been taken to Wright Patterson, which was the "foreign" technology research center at the time (Though I believe it was then called Wright Field).Of course, that's where it would have been in the first place...Which still begs the question, how would the D&H have gotten a hold of it.Maybe they have the Roswell and Kecksburg "vehicles" too A UFO boosted caboose?Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!
