With her pantographs exploding against the Nigerian sky, Virginian juice jack 125 stands in her glory...
VGN Success at last ! – image 1Took forever to get to this point. Bounding box this, pivot that...All that pivot adjustment blew up the pantographs, so it's two steps forward, one step back. Gonna work on that next...Don't know if I can get working pantographs on a multiple model like this but I'll take a shot at it.Back in Washigton, under catenary, 125 shows off her flexibility though the crossovers...
VGN Success at last ! – image 2These units are desinged to run in tandem...that's 32 powered wheels (bo-bo-bo-bo to our friends across the "pond"), 6000 horsepower and 1 million pounds! And though Mike Adams says I shouldn't keep mentioning this is his work, I will. I'm just neatening up.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

digging into a way to control pantographs (part of EL2B-2) from lead "locomotive" (EL2B-1).The animation works, but not as advertised by Abacus. rather than parent child relationship with adjacent parts, all parts use "Main" as parent. I'm gonna play around with that a bit, see if I can get the upper portions to work off lower parts (as it should be).The same techniues will be adopted to the rest of the herd of electics waiting in production (5 at last count).Have to finish cab interior (learned some new tricks there I wanna try) animate the wheels, add some brake details, and and few other tweaks.Right now I'm using the physics Chuck created for the EF-4 (otherwise the thing moves like a rocket). I'm gonna send it off to him to check out (if he's okay with that) before I release it. First finished copy goes to Mike Adams.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: VGN Success at last !!!

Got the pantographs fixed and they are now bi-directional...
VGN Success at last ! – image 9
though not controllable from the cab. Also finished detailing the trucks...
VGN Success at last ! – image 10
including revolving journals and sand pipes. The cab now has an interior and it's lit at night (you can learn some pretty cool things by reading tutorials). I'm gonna attempt to make the lights work next.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: VGN Success at last !!!

Well, the lights are on, but nobody's home...
VGN Success at last ! – image 18
needs some interior detail and a crew...Lights also aren't "right". Markers are too low, which is weird because they are set for the same height as number boards. I have to work out the effect of the number boards so that the numbers are visible. You can even see the nose board, gotta work out the "glow" factorThe headlights are the goofiest part. Since the unit with the lights is actually the second unit in the considt I can't use the "frontmost" setting. Using the "somewhere in the train" setting works BUT, the sphere of light is on the wrong end of the lashup! What fun!Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

Frank, to light those number boards, in TSM, go in Poly Mode, select the number board poly, click F2 to pull up it's properties. Now you'll see that you can select the material for that specific poly. Select SolidHlfBrt. Now, it will light up evening, night and early morning hours. I use this method to light up destination signs and number boards on trolleys and locos.VGN Success at last ! – image 21The destination sign poly on this PE Hollywood is made from SolidHlfBrt while the surrounding housing is SolidNorm. Works pretty well.Tim

Decided not to wait, figured I'd forget (old age and all that)Looks great Thanks a lot...
VGN Success at last ! – image 24Also figured the issue with the low markers...Found a comma instead of a decimal point. Now i just need to move them forward a hair to clear the lenses. Thanks again.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: VGN Success at last !!!

Looks great, Frank. I'm glad you were able to solve the articulation problems. You should be able to solve the pantograph animation easily. I actually had the pantographs working properly, but for some reason, they weren't working on the version I sent you. I haven't worked on the EL2B since I sent it to you, so I don't remember why they weren't working. Anyway, keep up the good work.Mike Adams

RE: VGN Success at last !!!

Mike,
The pantographs worked fine until I moved a pivot and blew them up...it was a lot easier to reassemble them then I thought. I just had to redo some animation by moving them back where they belonged. The only real issue I had before I nuked them was they all went up at the same time. This was just a problem with their names. They needed to be numbered in sequence just like bogies. There were two sets of "1". I changed the aft set to "2" and they became bidirectional. They can't be controlled from the cab because of the articulation. Since they are actually on the "second locomotive" in the consist they don't respond to the "P" key. It's okay though, if you switch to an outside view quickly as the sim starts you can watch them go up.I'm adding more details now. I reduced the size of the railings and grabs on the body and now I'm working on the pilot. I adding footholds and handgrabs and the coupler lever. If I leave them off, somebody will remind me, so I'm taking pre-emptive action. From all the pictures I've been offered (and the ones from my library that I didn't know I had) I'ver noticed some reall differences in the details. Number 127 has no nose grabs, for instance, while 223 has a bunch. Same with the step on the body front. 223 has, 127 has not.Is it a time period thing?Anyway, this is how she looks now...
VGN Success at last ! – image 26I want to find out how to apply "spectral lighting". That should bring out a lot of the details which get lost in the black paint.I'm using the same physics that Chuck Zeilor used on Tim's version of the EF-4, so it runs great. Chuck will want to check it over but when it's "finished" I'll email you a beta copy.
