Final concept of the entire train...
AeroTrain – image 1
AeroTrain – image 2
Textures are screwy, as they're taken from what ever source I could find. The engine and tail end of the obs car are textured from the patent drawing. The rest use a part of the GM brochure produced in 1955.The entire thing needs a lot of finishing. Once the stainless is done, the different versions would be just a matter of lettering changes. One version I would also like to do is from the clay design study, apparently done in contrasting colors...
AeroTrain – image 3It looks to be black and red, or dark blue and red...Black and gold would look good too...A Monon version? Not protypical, but pretty "snazzy" nonetheless. Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

Hi Frank, could this be of help?

It's from a book I've had since way back called Trains of the World and I think the artist could be right about the paint scheme.Hope this helps. EDIT: credits to the author and artist of the illustartion./JonatanSteam rules!

RE: AeroTrain...

Like John said, them's the colors. All versions were brushed stainless (shows white in your picture) with those color accents and lettering for the particular road running the "demonstrator". Here's a picture of the real NYC version in a Cadillac advertisement.
AeroTrain – image 13The one thing your illustration doesn't show is the flutting that ran from the rear side of the engine all the way to the tailfins...
AeroTrain – image 14
You can sort of make it out on the left side of this picture, from another GM ad. The stainless will be hard to capture in texture files. Stainless has a grain to it and the grain is usually along the length of the object fabricated. The other hard part will be the fluting. It can be simulated with shadows. Since this model is very simple without a lot of details I'm wondering if it might not be possible to actually model the flutes rather them simulate them. I guess the only to find that out is to try.If you read the story at this site http://www.carofthecentury.com/the_aerotrain.htm they make an argument for the shortsideness of folks in 1955. After nearly 50 years there are features on this train that we are just beginning to see here in America, stuff that Europe and Japan have been doing for years. At that time people (especially railroaders) complained about a lot of those features...It didn't ride like heavier cars with four wheel trucks, etc... Today, of course, light weight trains are everywhere.Yes it was hacked together from busses, but that was the idea. An inexpensive lightweight passenger train. One way to keep the cost down was to reuse an existing technology in a different way. So they did.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

Fluting isn't too hard to simulate on textures. It is alot easier than modelling the fluted surface, which then has to be textured well to look good anyway. Here is one of my models; an Australian suburban train from the 70s. It had later fluting with more of a box section than the Budd type, but I can give you a hand with the 50s look if you like...(note that the model is in early stages, without transparencies and mismatched sides. It bored me!)Cheers,
Matt

RE: AeroTrain...

It looks great. Is it artwork or a photo?I've made one attempt at stainless so far, on a prelim for a second generation Zephyr...
AeroTrain – image 18
It looks "alright" but it was work getting all the panels to line up grain wise. I don't exactly remember how I did it.

RE: AeroTrain...

Frank,I "may" have some tips about how to do stainless steel textures:AeroTrain – image 20The 'wavy' letterboard area, which is supposed to be smooth polished stainless, is an idea borrowed from Marc Nelson of 3DTrains. I think my technique is different than his but it comes out looking nice. This car was also made using his Passenger Car core kit, so he gets credit for the mapping, but I completely redid his Pullman skins to produce Budd versions.By the way, these textures are actually pretty low-res - the entire height of the car side, not including the roof, is 128 pixels. It's the separate windows and lettering that are hi-res, which is Marc's clever way of optimizing the model and textures. Also, I've drawn textures for a couple different types of fluting - there's the Budd styles shown here on this in-progress model, and I also painted up some Pullman "Pattern 2" corrugations a while back, the kind with the alternating large and small ribs. I stay away from using photos since they can be tricky to work with. With fluting and corrugations, the key to it is getting the highlights and shading right, so you get nice depth with a shiny look. Specular lighting helps too, as you can see here. And the above image is also my argument for why you don't need to build the corrugations as part of the model...the textures take care of it all.Alex StroshaneAeroTrain – image 21

Here's some generic passenger car metal textures I did. I simply took a bit of flat metal Danny Pimentel photographed, added shading and highlights, etc.Anyone may feel free to use it if it's not too bad.AeroTrain – image 23"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. >It looks great. Is it artwork or a photo? Much-modified photo. The windows and doors are basically photos with some work done, and the flutes are much hacked photos to get balance and even flutes, with a bit of weathering and shade difference for realism.I'd agree with the other posters that textures can do the job. Trying to apply a decent texture over modelled fluting defeats the purpose and is pretty tricky.Cheers,
Matt

RE: AeroTrain...

It's as close to the patent drawing as I could get it...

so it may be a problem of perspective. It's one thing that has bothered me about photographs in general as a reference. I'm wondering how many of these shots are taken with wide angle lenses. They can sometimes distort the true appearance of an object. I thought about this as I was working on the Little Joe. Does the camera angle give the nose a longer appearance than it actually has?The same would apply to a drawing, especially if the drawing was made from a photograph.Don't know enough about how it works to say, so I follow the plans (when I have them). In the case of this train, I only have one dimension to work from and that was the overall height of the coaches. The rest was scaled accordingly.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: AeroTrain...

Yeah, you definitely match the drawing. But it definitely looks shorter than the photos. From the photo angle, I didn't think it was a perspective issue, but I didn't think of the camera lens. That could be it.-Jeff
