Hi All,
Here are some pictures of my latest project. I plan on uploading it to the file library after I work out a few more bugs. I am planning on modeling some other types of trailers. A flatbed and open-top trailers are in the planning stage. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Randy

RE: TTX F39 Flats

The flatcar is just shy of 2200 polys and trailers are around 1370 polys each. I'm trying to use lod's for the first time and that's taking some time.

Very nice looking models! If I may ask, how are you planning on doing the trailers? as part of the flat car shape file or a seperate shape file added using the freightanim line?Keep up the good work!Mykel

Very nice work, this is one of the things that we have been lacking. Will you be doing any other variations on the flat and/or trailers to fit different eras?joeTTX F39 Flats – image 8

RE: TTX F39 Flats

The way the flats are textured would probably make it hard to paint them in the modern yellow TTX scheme. I have never seen a picture of the actual cars in yellow, but if someone has a picture of one I could modify the model to make it possible. I am planning other trailers. I want to do a flatbed trailer and a open-top trailer. If anyone has suggestions for or photos of other 35' trailer let me know. Thirty five foot trailers were out of favor by the mid-sixties. Does anyone know what TTX used these cars for in the seventies?Randy

>Randy Thirty five foot trailers survived on the rail until the Eighties, up until the end of the eighties, you could only use railroad trailers on railroad flat cars. Then privately owned trailers came along, but they had to be specially reinforced and equipped for rail service, and most were 40 to 45 footers, mostly REAX trailers. Then in the late 90's the restrictions were relaxed allowing any highway trailer to piggy back. Prior to that, the trailers had to have reinforcemnts along the siderails on the bottom, the had angle iron ont he top of the sides to protect them from piggypackers, they had to have five hinges and four door locks, two per door, and they had special reinforcements internally. Reefers weren't allowed.Rob

RE: TTX F39 Flats

Thats up in the air right now. Originally I had planned on one shape for the flat and the trailers. Then, I thought about using the freightanim line. But, when using freightanim, the trailers have a tendency to "flicker." I'm now leaning toward one shape for everything again. I'm not sure if the flickering thing is my system, the models, or if this is normal for freightanim. Any insight on this would be helpful.
Thanks,
Randy

I've added loads like an Army half-track, a fire engine, and a 40' container to various flatcars using freightanm, and have never noticed any flicker. Possibly it is just from your computer system. It would be great to see the trailers available as a separate shape. Nice work there, Randy.

RE: TTX F39 Flats

Unfortunately I have not had much experience with any flickering while using the freightanim line. Is the trailer a single object? using a seperate texture? Don't know if this would help, but some possible suggestions.
Good luck!Mykel

RE: TTX F39 Flats

WOW Nice.FWIW, my only experience with freightanim did not notice the flicker you noted. Of course never got further than just viewing a stopped or slowly moving engine. What I did notice was the texture quality went to crap, when the freightanim was added to a freeware 3dtrains gp9 wag file and s file. This was on my system, can't speak for anyone else. Fine texture before, no blurring. Add freightanim, blurring, crappy texture. Remove freightanim, back to great texture. Gave up, that's my only experience. But, Randy, those are great looking 75' FC'sIf you're open to suggestions on 35' closed van trailers may I suggest CB&Q or RI...

RE: TTX F39 Flats

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm finding that LOD's can be fun. I'm using TSM to do the modeling. If anyone has any hints or tricks for using LOD's in TSM, please let me know. I am slowly working it out and am having some sucess. I'm using 50m,125m,250m,500m, and 2000m distance settings and by the 250m level the poly count is reduced by more than half.Randy
