RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

I did check it out, Mike.. nothing that was helpful. However a great site for the future.I know it is a tank engine and I know that it might be related to the "Booster" (C-16) type dock switcher. But I don't hink it was that big.Bruce

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

You're right, Jeff it is not Atlas. On closer look it is AHM. It was part of a starter kit I got for my children. The point is --- what is it modeled after? The stardard 'dockside tank' was in fact a C-16 saddle tank switcher. This tank loco is clear not a saddle tank. If it is a modication of the B&O dockside tank - without the saddle tank, then I could in fact use an engine file from a C-16. That means that the orginal was about 80 tons not a light tank at 30 plus tons. So, I am still trying to discover what engine it ws modeled after.Any ideas?Bruce

As pointed out it is NOT modelled after a C-16 Dockside. With that Belpair firebox I would think it is a PRR engine.
Chances are it is a fantasy loosely based on some unknown prototype that need not even have the same wheel arrangement.

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

Methinks it's a model of a model of a model. It resembles the old (1950's-1960's) Mantua model which came in 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 versions. I had one of the old cast Zamac 0-6-0's with the suggested "Belpaire" firebox. As for prototype? While Mantua's early models were based on Reading prototypes, the later products were generic, based on USRA designs. This particular locomotive doesn't resemble USRA by any stretch, but I do have some pictures of Pennsy "Lines West" switchers that might have been the prototype. I looked through the diagrams on the Web, but none of them show that square boiler tank.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

It's a mix of about 5 different steam locomotives in one. It looks like some kind of German locomotive. But they didn't have 0-4-0's like that. Their 0-4-0's were tiny. Something that looked like that in Germnay or anywhere would've been like a 0-8-0 or 0-10-0 or 0-6-2t maybe. They had some big 0-6-2's. And some small ones. But 0-6-2's weren't German usually, they might of had their own. But the Austrians built some cool ones.I've ran one.Kevin Bush,

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

WHAT? Do you actually believe that there was ever an 0-4-0 side tanker with a bel-pair firebox ever produced by an American company? Look around for German locomotives or Austrian, you'll see that the domes and even some of the crappy details represent a European locomotive design. The model is just a piece of junk....You guys need to focus on some more realistic models...do some research, and look closely at photographs. You make Trainz look good.Kevin Bush,

And that loco is not a piece of junk, I actually think it looks awesome, although I'm more for a huge headlight on the smokebox door though. /Jonatan

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

Looking at the model: I believe it is none of the above. I have a very similar one built by Mantua. It is an 0-6-0 but I know that they made 0-4-0's with the same "shell." Although I know they were bought out, so it could have been made by another company, but you did say it's 30 years old. Just my guess.HO scale is 1:87, so if you take a dimension on the model (if you own it) and multiply by 87, you will get the prototype dimension.

A work in progress - but progess is being made.Things learned:1) You guys are great
2) You cannot trust the HO scale to be HO scale
3) Putting 'dreams' into reality doesn't always work duh ..
4) You guys are great ( I said that )Back to TSMIs there anyway in TSM to reduce the scale of entire project?Bruce

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

Just highlight the whole model with the button that looks like a square made of dots, then use the button with the arrows going four directions and size it that way. Piece a' cake. Then "re-gauge" it.Kevin Bush,

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

I may have found a ptototype that is pretty close to your model. I came across this picture in a "new" batch of old magazines I just bought. What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old – image 17
Railroad Magazine, September 1969...No. 12 built by Porter in 1919 for the BEDT (Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal) this 0-6-0T is "less than 30 feet long, weighs 50 tons light, and 64 tons in working order with the capacity for 1200 gallons of water and 500 gals of bunker C fuel oil...25,000 pounds tractive effort."At the time the article was written the locomotive and her younger sister, no. 16 were both for sale, including 4 tons of spare parts. No 16 looks like the typical B&O docksider (ala Varney and a bunch of other companies) except she also is a 0-6-0T.

RE: What is it? Altas HO Switcher 30yrs old

Not sure...The pictures you see were tiny to begin with. I do think I have another article specifically about the BEDT that may have better pictures. I'll check and get back to you.I also found some pages on the web devoted to Porters...
http://www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/porter07.Html
http://www.over-land.com/rrporter.html
http://www.northeast.railfan.net/diesel112.htmlYou could make a career modeling these little buggers!None of them resemble the "big" Porters we're looking at here. Never thought of Porter as building anything but those "cute" little narrow gauge steamers.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

I rescanned at about 9600 dpi and then had to shrink it all down to get it here...I think this is the best I can do on No. 12
