I got hung up on my Dash 8 Project, which is near completion, so I put my SD40 and SD40-2 projects on hold. I still did not like the basic detail level of the TA revsion of the SD40-2, as it did not have a lot of items seen on Canadian SD40s, so I stole some of my own parts and added them to my own QNS&L repaint to see if I could get the look and feel. Here is a quick preview in SFV. I added a front bell, the rear handbrake stand and wheel, the compressor aftercooler piping, the inertial air filter intake snow awnings, the QNS&L fuel tank top shape, and a properly shaped antenna to the roof. I should have the kinks (and the skins) out by the week-end, and will post. I will also post the TSM project files for everyone to play with.

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

Looks great! What are the frame rates like? I've been working on my Grand Trunk GP38's, 40's and SD40's using the Freightanim tag. Still not happy with a couple of details - but we're getting there.

Hello Callagst,I had already done some TSM Freightanim for the SD402 and I think your handrails could be more curved.
You have some exemple in the file library: atsf5142.zip and sd402evo.zip
If you want to, I could send you the TSM files.
Friendly,

Ca va, Jean-Louis. Je les ai regardé comme il faut et je t'en donne des nouvelles. Un travail de qualité, en passant. Je me limite pour le présent aux détails sur des locos Canadiens, surtout le QNS&L, car je les connais bien. Thanks, Jean-Louis. I looked at them and I will contact you later on. Excellent work, by the way. Currently, I am limiting myself to details on Canadian-operated locomotives, especially QNS&L, as they are the ones I know best.

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

The in-game shot speaks for itself. The train has two locos and 42 cars. This is in KHP1, with the detail sliders all maxed out to the right. I run a Radeon 9200 with 128 megs on a P4 1.4mhz with 256 megs of RAM. The add-ons need a lot of work as far as skin textures are concerned, and some detail refinement. Note that this loco has two horns. The TA rear right horn will be alpha'ed out and I will put one of my own, properly constructed, where the test horn is currently located behind the exhaust stack on the left side, which is where they are on the QNS&L rebuilds. It is probable that these 22 rebuilds will be replaced within the next 24 months by 14 new locomotives (builder undetermined).

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

I hope it's not too much to ask, but could someone make a couple of changes to an SD40-2 shape file for me? Basically what I need is the horn moved to the same location but on the LEFT side of the locomotive (between the dynamic brake and the radiator fans). I need 4 shape files with NO LOD settings, please!:Shape file 1: Horn moved to left side.
Shape file 1: Horn moved to left side, rear ditch-lights added.
Shape file 3: Horn moved to left side, rear ditch lights, cab mounted lights ADDED (2 sets of headlights plus ditch lights).
Shaoe file 4: Horn moved to left side, cab mounted lights ADDED (2 sets of headlights plus ditch lights). If you are willing to do these Shape files for me I would greatly appreciate it. I can send you the .S files to work with so that you don't have to add the cab lights.P.S.- I'm doing a repaint of TA's SD40-2 for a Southern Pacific unit and I was wondering, what would be an appropriate horn for an SP?

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

I am not into using Shape File Manager. However, once I have finalized my horns (on Canadian locomotives of this vintage, almost all 3-chime Nathans), I will do multiple shape files for CN and CP and for various horn and bell locations based on what information I have in hand. The shape files are currently around 1400 polys converted. I am going to tackle the front nose headlight location as well, as it is inaccurate for any EMD locomotive as currently depicted on the TA model. For CP and CN locomotives I will do shape files both with and without the aftercooler piping. I will attempt to do this using the existing TA skins for the shape files, modified as required, if TA is nice enough to say yes to a request. The SP headlight arrangement is not an easy fix, so I make no promises. Also, the SP handbrake arrangement is dependant on which locomotive series you are modeling. Give me a couple of weeks, and I will see what I can do with what I already have in hand. I am trying to keep the whole thing below 2000 polys converted.

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

I'm not worried about polys. The 10,000 polys of MLT's Dash 9-44CW would be my limit. As for the SP repaint of TA's SD40-2 I don't know when I will release it as I have no modeling skills or painting skills (SP seemed easy since it's mostly gray with some red).

They had a number of SD40/SD45s that were revamped by Morrisson-Knudsen in the early 90s to SD40-2 standard and called SD40M-2.

CP too had SD40M-2's that were rebuilds from DRGW, SSW, SP that were SD45's and from UP that were SD40's and SD40-2's that were rebuilt by MK to CP into the 5400 series in terms numbered 5490 to 5499. Mike

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

Sorry to disagree, SP did have some SD40-2s on their roster according to the 1992 version of Kalmbach's Diesel Locomotive Rosters. On pg. 148 lists 85 SD40-2r, #s 7300-7346, 7348-7381, 7383-7385. I'm not sure what the 'r' indicates - nor was this clarified in the book.

Never mind SP. I will check the roster info out from sure sources before anything gets done SP/UP/DRGW-style. I like SP, but please remember, I come from the Great White North where winters last from November to May, and where the lakes freeze over in November and the ice drops in late May or early June. Here is an update. I should be OK to upload the Canadian revisions by Monday. In-game shot is attached.

Hey Steve don't forget one thing about the QNSL SD40-2's but I don't know if it was only on the SD40-1's before going to CP is that the rear twin headlights are wrong, they should be veritcal than horizontal. Correct me of I'm wrong ok ? Another good paint scheme http://www.trainweb.org/galt-stn/cproster/locomotive/5400s/cp5403%20as%20qnsl207.htmMike

Give the man a cigar! (My politically charged statement for this month.)You are absolutely correct. Removing them will be almost impossible, but I will see what can be done. I drove these beasts for a very long time, so I have a pretty good idea what they do have. The original SD40s that CP bought second-hand (in addition to the second-hand SD40-2s thay also acquired later) all had the same headlight arrangement, and the oversize fuel tanks. There are also some lease units out there ex-QNS&L with the same characteristics. A fertile field for skinners!

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

I am taking a stab at moving the headlights around or replacing them to get a more accurate model, plus add some details. The TA model is a bit of a pig to work with because the hidden nose headlight is not alphanorm so it cannot be masked, but so far I seem to be doing OK with by trying an overlay with a test headlight. Same for the back end, except it is going to be a bit tougher to get a clean surface match. Here are some progress shots from SFV screen dumps. I have room for about another 250 polys worth of detail. After that, the users can do as they see fit.

You could if you changed the truck textures to represent the Flexicoil-C trucks used on all of the SD series locomotives instead of the HTC introduced with the dash 2 series. You would have to shorten the frame though, get rid of the shock absorber and sideframe extension on the trucks (non-existent on Flexicoil-C). That would be a lot of work though. You'd be better off just buying the SP Heritage pack from MLT. They are very detailed, especially in the texturing.

Looking better Steve keep it up, I remember seeing ex-QNSL SD40's but CP designated them as SD40-1's it was simple to tell that difference was because of the rear headlights and the intercooling pipes and the protective intake hatch from the rest of the units.Mike

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2

The fuel tank shape has been properly notched and skinned, and I am presently doing a new set of number boards (the TA ones are oversized). Note that the left hand side and right hand sides of these fuel tanks are notched differently. I will add both needle and fuel sight glass gauges to the sides of the tank, which are per prototype. The add-on is currently 1500 polys converted, so I will do two versions, one with hand brake on the left rear (241-264), and one with the hand brake on the rear centre line at the end of the long hood (205-239). I will also make some corrections to my existing skins, make one model in each series (engine numbers 207-234-257-317-320) and post the entire series as a pack, along with a CP version which I will post separately, using existing skins, once the creators have granted permission.

Three versions of QNS&L SD40s, SD40-2s and SD40-2CLC rebuilds are done. QNS&L SD40s had SD45 frames, so the shape file changes to the TA SD40-2 model are accurate for an SD40 from that railroad. Here is the 216 on KHP2 hauling 75 of my loaded ore cars.

RE: Freightanim Add-ons for TA SD40-2:UPDATE

Here are a couple of in-game shots on the Kootenai. The freight anim parts for the older paint scheme locomotives (206-240 and 241-264) are done. The rebuilds will come later. I have two minor corrections to make to the existing skins, which have a couple of errors, and they will be ready to upload. Both left rear and centerline rear handbrake locations are covered, and the fuel tank shape as built is accurate for QNS&L SD40s and SD40-2s of 1972-1994 pre-rebuild vintage. These machines never had any ditchlights prior to the rebuild program in 1993-94. The snow awnings have been added, the unique vertical rear headlight is done, and I have attempted to correct the TA massacre of the SD40-2 nose headlight when reskinning in Canadian line colours with a proper front headlight relocation. I am getting stable operation on my own machine, but I would appreciate it if someone would volunteer to beta-test and critique. If this works, I will do similar freightanim mods for CN and CP loco repaints based on the TA SD40-2. Any takers? If so, send me an e-mail and I will zip and forward as an attachment.
