RE: Danger! Danger! Shark Attack! :-)

Guys,I am speechless... Great work, and I look forward to running these beauties. Please guys, keep up the excellent work on these Transition era locos, as they are definitely worth the downloading time. I can forsee quite a few PRR Fan's dropping them in front of freights and even at the head end of a coal drag. Could I ask a question related to the PRR Unit: I can see that you've got the Late 50's Single stripe scheme on them, but do you guys have any intentions on an early 50's (as delivered) 5 Stripe scheme? Just wondering out of curiousity. Please, keep up the excellent work there at NALW... Thomas Pearce,

you've got to hear the offbeat rattling throb of their turboed 8 cyl diseasel (remember GM and alco were using 12 cyls to get the same power) and these hunker down and lug just like the 12" to the foot scale ones do... ChuckI'll have to request that you NOT release these anytime soon, you see, this weekend is my new bride's birthday and we're househunting and that sort of thing. If you release these in the near future, I know my effectiveness in accomplishing all these tasks will be greatly reduced since I'll be distracted by the fine work of NALW! In all seriousness, they look great and I look forward to running them when time allows!
I've been looking forward to more Baldwins for quite some time now! GH

I like the "Please keep feet off wall"!
Does it really say that in real life?

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

Any chance of some weathered skins?A quick check of "Fallen Flags" shows that these rather wierd looking streamliners got used for some pretty grubby work.Seems weird that they bothered with streamlining and used them to haul coal?!GeoffWest London

RE: Danger! Danger! Shark Attack! :-)

Chuck,According to an article published about the 1949 edition of the Broadway Limited, he also designed the interior that went into the Broadway. But another not quite ever operated locomotive that was displayed by the Pennsy at the 1939 World's Fair, the S-1 Duplex. The S-1 though, unlike the T-1, was operated only once in revenue service. It was found to be unusable thanks in part to excessive axle loading, weight, and operating clearances. But Chuck, could you please drop me a PM? I have a question about the Baldwins...

RE: Danger! Danger! Shark Attack! :-)

Hi Geoff,
It was not that the Sharks were designed as coal haulers, but they did have Westinghouse generators and traction motors. These were the most potent traction motors available at the time, able to take more current than those found on some other makes. This made them capable coal haulers as well as enabled them to handle general freight needs when equiped with 68:15(65mph) gearing, and able to handle local passenger service with 62:17(80mph) gearing. I think very few got the faster gears.

Also, streamlining was not necessariy applied to or derived from function in the era when these locos were designed.I've seen some pretty swift-looking streamlined *toasters* that weren't employed in high-speed service as well. Henry

Monongahela colors were pretty much black and white in all the photos I've seen. It looks like they took the NYC locos, peeled off (or painted over) "New York Central" and put "Monongahela" in its place. The B&O units are quite striking!GH

THe skinny on the shark.1) at present I don't plan to do the DR6-4-1000/2sc
2) I did clean skins to allow the repainters an easier effort.Baldwin introduced the Shark Nose body style on the DR4-1500 because it was felt the Baby Face carbody was not projecting an agressive modern look, to me in fact they look like Droopy the Dog of cartoon fame. Baby faces that is.The railroads that owned and ran sharks included NYC, PRR, B&O and EJ&E as buyers from Baldwin. Monongahela & D&H bought theirs second hand. Monongahela bought 7 ex NYC A units and 2 B's and D&H bout the last two running A's from Monongahela 1205 & 1216 which are the only surviving sharks kept in storage in Michagan, somewhere.
