I have a model that I have just finished. This is the first time I have tried rotating fans. I managed to look a few things on here to help me get them rotating... No problem there, they spin like they are supposed to. The only issue is that they spin on the x axis when it should be rotating on the y axis!! Looking like paddlewheels when I run the loco. I have searched but have yet to find anything. Can someone help?!?!?! Oh I'm using TSM...

I've never designed a locomotive, but when you say rotating fans what comes to mind is the readme file of TA's SD40-2 BNSF #8010.MTA Going your way for 100 years. 1904-2004

RE: Rotating Fans

Keith--are you viewing them in MSTS, or in Shape File Viewer? Sometimes SFV does wacky things with rotating axes, i.e. Dekosoft fans do what you describe in SFV, but spin normally in MSTS. Don't know why. . .

To get it right you need to synchronize the animation (which axis is your rotation around) and the axis orientation of your fan sub-object.
The base for an animated fan is a fifth (or seventh) wheel axis turned 90 degrees on it's end. Using TSM or some other program should not matter.

Right now the fans are named rod1, rod2, ... and the parent part is the MAIN shape. Should this be changed?

if you're using 3d.Canvas check not to have selected the option "automatic create animation" in the export wizard, in this case rods and wheels animation will not be what you see in the 3d software, but they will be rebuilt rotating on the X axis, and recalculating angles...Rotating Fans – image 9

RE: Rotating Fans

Keith's still using TSM...I know what his problem is, but not the steps to take to correct it in TSM.
In short, Keith, you need to rotate the "pivot point". You may have have to rotate the object back AROUND the pivot point, so to speak, after you do that, but all it is is that the pivot points are rotated 90 degrees off...----------- BUZZ -----------Rotating Fans – image 10

RE: Rotating Fans

In TSM, go to the offending part and select it. Then go to the part menu and click on reset axis orientation. Then check your animation from within TSM. You might have to redo your animation sequence. If you're lucky, just resetting the orientation will fix the problem.Dave
