Didn't even now Cleveland had a terminal railroad...

but this one looks like it could use the New Haven EP/EF running gear and some ingenuity. I can see the Milwaukee MU stacks in there too.Isn't there a NYC unit like this?Maybe in my next batch...Moving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Another boxcab electric...

Yes, NYC had some off them, the difference was the NYC units had been equipped for 3d rail and those small panto's. But if I'd remember correctly, someone already made them ( NO offense: they are a bit outdated though ( but good foor the time they where released ) and a better model would be welcome )here's a link for pictures:http://www.northeast.railfan.net/electric6.html

Greetings from holland

LAST EDITED ON May-31-04 AT 05:45 PM (EDT)

Keltiksylk:
Jeff Link and myself built this Cleveland Union Terminal unit and its third rail New York Central counterpart last year under the name, "Island Electric". You'll find it in the library here at train-sim. However we welcome you to look at our model and then try your own hand at making this wonderful old electric. Most of our model was done in a low resolution unlike today's expectations for higher-rez textured models. There is certainly room for another interpretation and we would be the last to discourage you from going ahead, should you decide to tackle this project. By the way, the 2-C+C-2 chassis is applicable to other similar locos such as the NH EP-4, EF-3, EP-3 and the PRR GG-1.Frederick Dreany

RE: Another boxcab electric...

Frank
As stated NYC used third rail versions though technically CUT was a subsidiary of the Central, when the wires came down on the CUT those units ended up on the CSS&SB where the South Shore removed the lead and trailing trucks reducing them from 2+C+C+2s to just C+C freight motors.Gary S

NOTE:
The CSS&SB locos were not cut down versions of the 2-C+C-2 P-Motors but a similar-looking C+C electric used formerly by the New york Central in several locations. Most of the NYC electrics would be desirable pieces of equipment for MSTS electric fans.Frederick Dreany

RE: Another boxcab electric...

Like I said these are beautiful models if you like Heavy Mainline Electrified Railroading... And I do...
I've converted East Metro to 3rd Rail just so I would have a place to run them..... Along with a few other toys! Chuck Schneider

Chuck,
What are the units in the last photo. They look different enough to be interesting, and utilize part of the NH EF/EP chassis.By the way, did your crew ever receive the New Haven DST files and skins?Moving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Another boxcab electric...

Frank, they are all the same model of locomotive. The first two photos show the units that were canabalized for parts. The last picture shows how the South Shore converted the ex-NYC locos. Here's what I know of them, from the book "SOUTH SHORE, The Last Interurban", by William D. Middleton:An opportunity to update its motive power fleet at a reasonable cost was presented to the South Shore during the mid-1950's when the transfer of electric power from the dieselized Cleveland Union Terminal electrification rendered a number of the New York Central's R-2 class electrics surplus to the needs of the New York Terminal electrification. Ten of the C+C units were purchased by the South Shore, and between 1955 and 1958, six were extensively re-built and re-wired by the Michigan City shops for South Shore service, permitting retirement of almost all of the railroad's aging steeple cab locomotive fleet. A seventh re-built unit entered service in 1968.Built by American Locomotive Company and General Electric in 1931, the 140 ton ex-New York Central units were rated at nearly 3,000 h.p. and developed a tractive effort of 66,600 pounds. Equipped for multiple unit control, they could be paired to provide a locomotive equal in capacity to the big Russian (or Molotov) units, and had the added virtue of being able to negotiate a number of sidings where weight or clearance limitations precluded operation of the "Little Joes". These are the only two color photos I shot of them, both at Michigan City, Indiana.

RE: Another boxcab electric...

They're R-2s, and are closely related to the CUT P-1/NYC P-2 class, the latter intended to be a higher speed passenger locomotive. You can get a look at these and other NYC juice jacks at this link on George Elwood's site: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/nyc/nyc-elec.html. There are also links to diagrams of these on this same page. You'd better be sitting down when you take a look ... ... -Phil
