My first MSTS loco! (W.I.P) – image 2Here she is, an SG 0-6-0/2-6-2. About 1104 polygons. She is 2.5 meters wide, is that too wide or how wide was American steamers? Track gauge is 1435 milimeters. Is that too narrow?/JonatanSteam rules!

Standard gauge is 1.435 meters, so you are correct there. The width is a bit narrow though. The drawings I have of 0-6-0's show about 9'8" as the norm, that would be close to 3 meters. That's a good start so far, good luck with it.EDIT: one more thing I noticed, make sure your drivers are wide enough (tread width that is). They should be about .14 meters in width, they look really thim in that render.

Maybe... No, it will not be a Mogul, I think it's a shortage of little Oldtimer 0-6-0s and 0-4-0s.I might make a Mogul later, IF I even can get this one into the sim.The stack will remain a diamond one. And I don't think I'm ready for EBT #14 just yet.Edit: Also, how high above the rail is the couplers?/JonatanSteam rules!

I had NO intetions to make any prototype or base it on any prototype! And do you know how damn hard it is to animate the Walschaerts? It's hard enough to animate siderods. Soon you'll ask to change cab, boiler, pilot, headlight etc etc etc. No prototype! Now I will ask a question, the part "Main", should I link every individual part to Main or could I just attach everything and make the entire body to a big chunk and texture the different parts one by one?EDIT: Damn typos! >_</JonatanSteam rules!

RE: My first MSTS loco! (W.I.P)

For info on how to link the parts, open up the scotsman .3ds file from the samples folder. You can also find the info in the docs folder.Transparency involves adding an alpha channel to your texture using a decent graphics program (PSP or PS) and then assigning that texture to the model and exporting it using the correct parameters. That's the simple explanation, you'll need to do some searching to find the details, although some of it is covered in the MSTS docs.Cliff

I have attached every part that has the same texture map as Main, wheels, rods and everything have been named. The crosshead (ROD02) isn't linked to anything, should that be linked to Main as well? I can't see in what order they are linked on the Scotsman.I also tried exporting the model with one LOD but then I got an error message and Gmax crashed. I hope there isn't anything with the model./JonatanSteam rules!

Every part except the Main has to be linked to something. This non linked crosshead is the probable cause of your crash. Beer is not a matter of life and death. It is much more serious than that.

RE: My first MSTS loco! (W.I.P)

Not sure if I can be of much assistance since I don't use G-Max, but take a screen shot of your heirarchy and post it here. Usually if models cause the sim to crash it could be something wrong there. Also, you might check your model with Shape File Viewer to make sure the textures appear correctly and everything looks as it should. It seems SFV will work with .s files that MSTS doesn't like. One last thing, you can try manually editing a consist file to include your steamer and try loading it into the game. If it doesn't work it will usually give you some kind of UID error that can help to track down the problem. Good luck and hope you are able to get things ironed out!Mykel

Wheels are normally named WHEELS11, WHEELS12, WHEELS13. In TSM if you call a wheels Wheels1, Wheels2, Wheels3 they won't go round. I don't think it will fix the problem but they may not go round once you do export it. Could it be that the ploy count is to high why it is working.http://groups.msn.com/MSTSNarrowGauge (Now being updated more oftern)

RE: My first MSTS loco! (W.I.P)

Hmmm... GMax does it differently than 3DC. Do you have all the other parts as a child of "main"?
Also, I do not think the poly count would be an issue, since you do not have that many objects or complex objects.
Another test you can do, save a back up copy of your engine, then try exporting it only with the main part. Delete the rods and wheels. (I think in GMax you can export without any wheels.) If you can get it to work this way, then probably something is wrong with the heirarchy.
Unfortunately I work with 3DC, so I apologize I cannot be more helpful, but hopefully some experiences can be share with the different programs!
Forgot to say, but your steamer looks very good! Especially for your first project.Mykel

RE: My first MSTS loco! (W.I.P)

LAST EDITED ON May-27-04 AT 01:31 AM (EDT)

Not to start any flames, (I'm a confessed steam addict) but maybe we all should take it a bit easier on Jon? He's battling through the process of putting a steam locomotive together (heck, I can't even figure out how to operate the consist editor) and a lot of us are kinda jumping all over him about modifications or tutorials or whatever. Let's let Jon do what he wants on his model. Just my two cents, not looking for flamage.*steps down from soapbox*Thanks, and steam on Jon! Tim Botti

We'll see the 611 run again...someday

RE: My first MSTS loco! (W.I.P)

When you select an object after applying the "reset xform" operation, it will have a yellow box around it and you can't deselect it. To fix this, move to the modifier tab, right-click on the xform entry, and select "collapse all"(you may get a pop-up warning, just click yes). That should set it back to normal. If it has flipped "inside out" as a result of the restet xform, select the mesh editing>normal modifier, and check "flip normals".
