Cool. I guess those plans helped, eh?Now If my scanner was working, I'd bribe you with shots of MILW 10301, the quill that was experimentally split in two and drawbarred together. Looking real nice. Bradley Linda

So, what was the idea? I mean Milwaukee splitting the Quill like that? Were they planning on using them separately on locals, like they did on some EF-1's?Tim

No, they were having problems with the frames breaking. Evidently Westinghouse didn't beef the frames up for Milwaukee's 10 degree curves. So they split 10301 in two, and drawbarred the two halfs together. It was shortlived and unsuccessful. It was later rejoined into one unit again, and they found another way to beef the frames up. If you have Noel Holley's book, there's a picture of it in there. An interesting note, Pres. Harding once ran 10305 Bradley Linda

RE: Quill...

Westinghouse built some very similar locomotives for the New Haven, except those had cast frames. Apart from possible axle-loading problems, I can't see why they built the Milwaukee units were built with bar frames. Clearly, that was their undoing. Have any of you run across any reason whay they were built that way? -Phil

which is only just now getting worked on again. The new version has the first 8 drivers done, but nothing else.I'm learning a lot of techniques in building articulated electrics that will help finish these models. There are other smaller camelbacks started, and waiting for me to learn enough to finish them...Reading and CNJ engines. There are others, some part of a slew I started in an effort to burn myself out in 6 months, and some I've started as n outgrowth of Lil' Joe.My wishlist is too long to post Moving America into the 19th Century!
