Just another update on the progress on these beasts...Heavy Electrics – image 1
Here's a "better" shot of the Quill (EF-2?)...Or at least the front have of it...You guys weren't kidding about "two Pacifics, back to back". The sideframes still need some joint work. Those driver textures are temporarily borrowed from one of my Winans 0-8-0 "camel" types. The pony and trailing trucks are still in their raw "cylinder" stage. The great little details are all Tim Muir's, lent to me from his boxcabsThe bad news is I really wanted to show some MSTS shots of Mike Adam's EL2 but I'm still having IUD errors...
Heavy Electrics – image 2
so all I have is this shot from Shape viewer that really doesn't do it justice. The trucks are modified from Darrin Yoder's. You can see how the engine has been split into seperate parts. There's three sections, all diesel locomotives (see, Tim, I do listen to your advice). I still have to reapply the textures, which are all Mike's, but consolidated into one image. I don't like the pilot. I modified Mike's thinking it needed to be leaner...Instead I'm going to use the massive original Mike created and which I'm currently using on......the W-1 with new texturing...
Heavy Electrics – image 3
Mike's Virginian electric also supplied the main body parts for that enormous bulk. I'm not sure how close it is, I haven't found any plans so I'm working from Mike's EL2 drawings and photographs. Those nose stripes are a "challenge" as we are wont to say in the 21st Century...Mike had built the EL-2 nose as several seperate sections which has been a godsend. Still, lining up all those stripes is a bugger! Finally a little "surprise". I'm freelancing a bit for NALW and they have me working on...
Heavy Electrics – image 4
this New Haven EF/EP-3 (did I get that right?). The transition of planes on the nose had to be done in two parts. I used "paper cut-outs" for the preliminary textures. The quill drive is "installed" and the sideframes are very highly modified parts from the Lil' Joe.I'll try to keep making progress on these and keep you updated...Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Heavy Electrics...

Not really, I have this tendency to work on several projects at once. These are kind of cool because they are all generally related (so for once I'm not running in several directions at the same time).I made a bunch of progress on Mike's Virginian over the last two nights and hope to have a screen shot tonight. The two drive sets are in the sim, now it's only the body that's giving me an IUD error.Moving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Heavy Electrics...

Thanks for setting me straight. The file has been renamed a few times. First I called it Quill, than EP-2. Than I realized it was wrong and renamed it EF-2...I am now renaming it correctly to EP-3Moving America into the 19th Century!

LAST EDITED ON May-12-04 AT 08:06 PM (EDT)

Not to confuse things terribly, but ... New Haven's EP-2s were very similar to MILW's EP-3s, and New Haven's EP-4s were slightly shorter/lighter/older than its EF-3s ... ... -Phil

Keltiksylk:You're close. That would be the EP-4 and EF-3 New Haven RR models. Both very similar in appearance except for a difference in the length of the side grill. Unlike the EP-4, the EF-3 had no third rail equipment or capability. Looking good so far. Good luck to you.Frederick Dreany

RE: Heavy Electrics...

Now I'm really confused...Not really...The Quill being referred to is the frame in the first picture, a Milwaukee boxcab, EP-3 in CMStP&P parlance...The "other" quill you're speaking of is the New Haven EP-3/EF-4.Almost as confusing as T-1 when speaking of Reading and Pennsylvania. Two totally different designs, same designation.Moving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Heavy Electrics...

Yep I'm referring to the New Haven "stuff"....
That I've seen and ridden in as a little kid...
(Don't ask but a couple of Mom's cousins worked for the NY, NH & H)All I know about the Milwaukee and GN stuff is what I read and the AC box cabs that became FF2s on the PRR in the 50s.... And the that the Milwaukee was a glorified interurban (DC power and all) to the PRR and NH guys I grew up with... (that ought to light some fires!)

RE: Heavy Electrics...

Hoo Boy!Better duck...Having been raised in the shadow of Pennsy heavy electric operations, I understand exactly what you mean. A brace of E-44's roaring by with express freight is nothing to sneer at. I didn't know there was any other kind power until I was a teenager. In fact, my first exposure to a working road diesel was as an adult with children.Living along the NEC leads to questions like..
"But there's only one track?" and "Where are all the wires?"Even the smaller mains around Philly were double tracked and electrified. With Reading, Pennsy, the Seashore lines, and the P&W interurban there was a LOT of electric railroad in a relatively small area.Moving America into the 19th Century!

Quote:And the that the Milwaukee was a glorified interurban (DC power and all)....end quote. And that's what appeals to me about the Milwaukee electrics. A very downhome "c'mon in, take your shoes off and set a spell" railroad. Very incongrous to be sure: heavy electric power on mostly single track, and Idaho cedar poles. It could be called the worlds longest and largest "interurban" I suppose. The GN electrification was short and specific to the tunnel division through the Cascade range. Not nearly as spread out as the Milwaukee's two electric Divisions, in Montana and Washington states. But, I really like those NH juice-jacks, too. I'd like to see some of those "Yellow Jackets" up close and personal. Keep up the good work, Frank!Tim

Looking good Frank The EL-2B looks a lot better now with the toned down yellow. As for the New Haven unit it's looking superb! I've never really taken much interest in this railroad, but all that's going to change now I've seen this loco!!!!!!What with these two, the GN W-1 and the Quill all on the go, plus the recent Joes, we're going to be spoilt for choice for heavy weight electrics soon AlanHeavy Electrics – image 27

Thanks Chuck:
I believe that you're a bit more knowledgeable on those details than I am (or was) but certainly you are correct on that score. I had the chance to see an EF-3 up close and parked on the Stamford RR Station express track following the wreak of the freight train that it was pulling. It was a very impressive engine to see both up close and when pulling a train.Frederick Dreany
