It's really rough but it runs...
Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 1
The body is modified from Mike's Virginian EL-2B...The drive is modified EF-4. The textures, being crudely adatpted from the Little Joe actually take away from the lines of the locomotive, so it may not look to much like a "W" yet.I have also been working on Mike Adams Virginian unit. Haven't gotten it into the sim yet. I split the chassis into two frames with two bogies each. The body is a carriage stradling the two locomotives, like the EF-4.I used those trucks of Darin's. They're beautiful, but MSTS doesn't like 'em. I'm getting IUD errors out the wazoo on all three sections of the locomotive, so it's not just the trucks. I'm working through it though. In my spare time...I've been working on ENG and WAG file improvements for E-70. Chuck Zeilor has fed me a ton of information gleaned from his work with Tim's version and I hope to solve a bunch of problems with the last release. I think Kelley is working on lights, I haven't had a chance to contact in the past few days. The M10000 is on the back burner while UP decides whether I am worthy of a license. And then there's that "quill" thing...Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Great Northern

This one's got real potential Frank .It'd be worth spending some time on the W-1, as it's a real classic.Just one minor point, the green band around the nose, swoops down as well as up (see photo).Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 4Keep up the good work, it's very much appreciated out here .AlanPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 5http://www.blackpooltrams.com

RE: Great Northern

>Looks good! I never knew Great Northern had electrics! The GN electrified line was the 73 mile Steven's Pass route over the Cascade Mountains. It was under wires from 1909 to 1956, when diesels took over. The line was mostly operated by older electrics, but in 1947 Great Northern took delivery of two monster locos from General Electric. They were the W-1 class, Nos. 5018 and 5019 which were 5,150HP B-D+D-B locos that were over 100ft long!5019 was scrapped in 1959, and 5018 was sold to the Union Pacific in 1958 where it was rebuilt into a 5,000 hp coal-burning turbine No. 80B, it was scrapped in 1968.AlanPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 6http://www.blackpooltrams.com

Thanks for posting the picture...I can really see the resemblance with the EL2 nose and cab in this. I also notice the green doesn't stop at the headlight, but runs up the nacelle to the windshield.Moving America into the 19th Century!

Alan, thanks for showing the "down-on" pix of the W. It answers a bunch of questions I've had about these things for years, like just how was the top orange band carried up over the nose. Now, I see that my surmises were correct, how they curl around but the two sides don't meet like on later GN diesels. These were a class-act locomotive. Also, the roof detail is excellent, showing the torpedo tubes and piping, pans, horns with the little shields in front. Really valuable pix. Thanks again for sharing your Big G big W.Tim

You're welcome Tim. I may not be able to build 'em, but it's nice to be able to assist in any way I can to try and help these wonderful locos come to fruition. The work that Frank, Chuck, yourself and others have done on the EF-4s is excellent. The more of these big electrics the better .AlanPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 15http://www.blackpooltrams.com

RE: Great Northern

I'll post some updates on the nose textures later tonight. My Comcast link has been down and I've been offline all weekend. The only way to get the mapping to work was to paint the nose in different parts. Fortunately for me, Mike built the EL-2 in just that way. Getting the striping to line up is the biggest challenge.FrankMoving America into the 19th Century!

Well, Frank, you certainly are a busy boy! Really, tho, I think the Class W is a very worthy project. It used to be my favorite electric when I was into GN many years ago. I think you ought to make the middle/carbody section a locomotive too. This way when the users are building consists they will find it all together in one place, instead of having to bounce back and forth between sections. You could split the horsepower between the 3 units. This is how Chuck and I have done the MILW E74 - E77. It's so much easier building a consist this way.I hope you continue with this project. Maybe there's a Class Y-1, or a Z in the future too, eh? Tim

RE: Great Northern

Chuck and I have been writing back and forth. He's showing me how to fix the issues with my version of the EF-4, and I was able to give him some speed info. He even sent me a set of eng files doctored up for E-70. So I'm following right along.Looking at these pictures I'm more convinced than ever that the EL2 body was the perfect choice. In fact the W looks as if they took both "sections" of the EL and welded them back to back.I've saved all these photos. The details really help a lot. I never would have caught the horn "shields" without you mentioning them. The nose paint is definitely different. The fact that the top and bottom stripes are actually continuous is not obvious in any picture I have.Like I said before, I'm working on the EL and W together, kinda. There are things Mike and Darin tried to show that were beautiful, but won't translate well into MSTS. Darin's sideframes are very complex and had to be "dumbed" down. Mike's pilot was almost as solid as the real casting, but I cut it down quite a bit.I really wish the artists creativity wasn't limited by the sim.I also did away with the "square" wheel sides, opting for round instead. It cost me polys but I don't like the technique. I think it shows up in the final product (unless you are very very careful with mapping). TSM mapping being what it is, round works better for me.Anyway, things are going a lot slower than they went with "Joe", but there is progress. I really am trying hard not to go too many directions at once...Though I did give the centipede body a shot when I got bored yesterday...That Baldwin cab is a bear. The odd transition at the winshield, almost perfectly round to two angled flats, is hard to get right.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

I'm here if you need any help, Frank. This is such a cool and awesome locomotive, definately the "BIg Boy" of traction ( I may be wrong here). Just see how they tower over the older class Z's in the color photo in Alan's second post. I'm always reminded of Charles Woods' statement in his old GN book that the Class W's fit through Cascade Tunnel "like cotton wadding down a gun barrel".There really is a "family resemblance" between the EL2B and the W. You are fortunate that you had a model to start with, like I did with your E74. I'd probably not have done it if you hadn't shared your files (thansk again), which is the most enjoyable part of this hobby, to me. I'm going to have to take a look at those type B trucks of Darrin's.Go slow. Take your time. There's no hurry, Frank. Just keep updating us. I'm really glad to see someone do these units. Wasn't there only 2 made? 5018 and 5019? Cheers!Tim

>Wasn't there only 2 made? 5018 and 5019? Yes Tim, only 2 were made (see my reply in post number 8 above). You're right in describing these as the Big Boys of traction, as at over 100ft long, I think they were the largest single unit electric locos ever to be built.I'm really looking forward to both these and the EL-2Bs, but agree that they're worth taking some time over, rather than trying to meet deadlines. Here's a photo of EL-2B No.126, if it's any use to you Frank.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 22AlanPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 23http://www.blackpooltrams.com

RE: Great Northern

In this hobby, I don't think there is such a thing as too many pictures. This view is much closer than a few others I have. I appreciate it.I could use a top view if anyone' got one...There isn't much I can do to improve Mike's model. One major thing I've done is split it up (like we seem to be doing on all these big electrics) to simulate the articulation. This tends to spread all that detail over three parts...and three seperate freight anims...The other major change was incorporating the Yoder trucks. The texturing is pretty much finished. Mike did all the work, all I'm doing is consolidating the textures into one 1024 x 1024 image.I'll try to post a progress shot soon.Moving America into the 19th Century!

It's not exactly a top view, but I posted a grainy black and white roof level shot in your "Virginian EL-2B" thread last week.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID5/7909.htmlThat's the best one I could find, and there are no nice 'O' gauge models of the EL-2Bs to work from that I'm aware of.AlanPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 25http://www.blackpooltrams.com

Be aware, Frank, that the pans differed slightly between these locomotives, or I should say, railroads. But not that drastically. 's'up to you how far you wanna go crazy...Tim

RE: Great Northern

Catching up on my mail...Chances are I'll modify the panto's from the EL...Mike even has them animated, but I haven't taken the time to study how he did it.I'm finding a bunch of stuff in my own library (I should open these books once in a while)... Besides a bunch of views in my book on the Virginian (funny finding photos of an EL in there, who knew?) I also found a photo of a W1 under construction in "Trains of the World". The chassis narrows to the front. I'll try and post a picture later on. It's amazing what you can find in all these train books I've been collecting these books & magazines for years now. I even collect images of the internet. You would think I'd have at least one of everything, but no, there's always something new to discover.FrankMoving America into the 19th Century!
