I'm almost finished with the J. The engine is finished and I'm wrapping up the tender. It's running well now with no crashes. The textures you see are NOT the final textures, but are my textures maps.(which is why I didn't make the shot a closeup) The .eng and .wag files also need some tweaking. I hope to get it to Mike Karlik within the next few day for texturing. Keep your fingers crossed.Mike Adams

Outstanding, Mike! Can't wait to run this puppy! I have never been a huge steam fan, but I was lucky enough to see the N&W 611 and 1218 in the Roanoke Transportation museum before they were brought out in to service (late 70s/early 80s?). Then my Dad and I were lucky enough to spend most of the evening in the cab of the 1218 with the young man who was keeping the unit fired before a run out of Greenville, SC the next morning (late 80s). I have a couple memorable night photos of the unit that night, one with my Dad and I in front of it. Anyway, enough waxing nostalgic - can't wait to download this puppy!Highball!John D. Peterson

RE: The J's coming

Thanks for the interest, John. I visited the museum in the early 70's and again about a month and a half ago. I wasn't fortunate enough to see 611 or 1218 under steam when they were returned to service, although I did see 1218 being moved (by diesel power) in Roanoke last June. But, as a boy living in southern West Virginia in the 50's, I would occasionally get to Bluefield and if I was really lucky I would see a J on the point of the Powhatan Arrow. There were always plenty of A's and Y's on-hand. Back then I didn't know the engine classes, but my dad would point out the different wheel arrangements and he was familiar with the differences in the mallets (Y's) and the simple articulateds (A's). Of course the J's stood out from everything else. Uh-Oh, Looks like I'm doing it too.(waxing nostalgic) Better stop.Mike Adams

RE: The J's coming

I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait. I guess I was a little better off than the rest of you as far as encounters with the N&W 611. I grew up in a house right next to the Norfolk Southern Columbus Division, I saw her under steam a lot. I just wish I would have thought to take pictures or video back then. She would pull an excursion train to the Ohio State Fair every summer, so that was two weeks of seeing her run by every day. I never did get to see her after the anouncememt came that the steam program was going to be canceled, so I never realy got to say goodbye.

RE: The J's coming

LAST EDITED ON May-02-04 AT 12:24 PM (EDT)

They used to turn her on the wye here in Glade Spring, VA if she had an excursion out of Bristol. Bristol no longer has a turntable or a wye. They would tow her backwards the rest of the way to Bristol with a diesel (about 25 miles). I rode behind her once (12 years ago to this very day!) between Bristol, VA and Radford, VA. I've also ridden behind the 1218. I've seen several engines being turned on the Glade Spring wye, 611, 1218, 4501 to name a few. Anyway, it's great that we're going to be able to run a J. Is she going to have that great class J whistle? I love that whistle! She was also in Bristol the day they announced the end of the excursion program. She had an excursion to Roanoke the next morning. I made sure I went out to see her as she rolled through Glade Spring. What a sight it was! Seeing her in the early morning sun on a frosty late October morning puffing that white smoke. Sorry guys, just going through some good memories!

RE: The J's coming

There are a couple of sounds of 611 available at the following web site:http://www.retroweb.com/611lastrun.htmlThis is an excellent site by Kipp Teague on the engine's last run. Could these sounds in any way be used on the MSTS model, which I must say looks great. There are other websites with good 611 sounds, a quick search in any major search engine will pull them up for you.I was also lucky enough to encounter 611 under steam. Rode her twice from Attalla, AL to Chattanooga, TN, and saw her at Anniston, AL with Frisco 1522... almost a decade ago. Those were the days.

I guess I'm just so fixated on getting the model finished, that I haven't really considered sounds. I've also been asked about a custom cab. Both of these areas are really beyond me at this point. Maybe someone who has expertise in these areas will fill in the gaps. I envy you guys who got to see her brought back to service. Mike Adams

RE: The J's coming

I got to see her 3 times in my life under steam and even got to climb into the cab while it made a stop in War, WV when i was 5 years old. I also got to ride behind her on a trip from Roanoke to Lynchburg and back for a totle of a 7 hour trip includeing stops.I curse Norfolk Southern for retiring her. Thats the only thing bad I could bring up about them. Hopfully she will one day come back!--DriftonClinch Valley District

Look'en good. I can't wait to get my hands at that throttle. I do have one question, is it going to have custom sounds? Thanks and keep up the good work.

RE: The J's coming

If you were able to get premission from NALW to use a sound from one of there units for this one I know the best one. I would use the Big Boy whistle for it since it sounds so much like the J 611. But that's just me...--DriftonClinch Valley District

RE: The J's coming

I like the Big Boy whistle also. However, John Means (NW 1218) has offered to provide the sounds for the J, using a whistle developed by Mike Laxer (NWFreak). I'm certain you'll like the sounds they provide.Mike Adams

ahhh...that is a "J" splashscreen. Its shrunk down jpg version.. I got it from casey999. He has something like 110 bmp splashscreen made up from all over the railroad world. The only thing is he refuses to paste Microsoft name on it. The bottom panel is all cutom made on all his work.
