RE: GEU50B

I think Rick Lamp did a good job with these. He kept the poly count down by relying heavily on textures. If you want more detail, write Rick and see if he wants to do anything. Who knows, he may let you modify his base model. I could see more detailing modeling on the handrails, trucks, pilot and possibly adding the transparent grills. I don't think there's a model out there that can't be improved in someway. The three U50Bs in the library look good. Personally, I wouldn't mind tackling a U50B or the ALCO Century 855. I like the oddball diesels. So if anybody has good drawings of these two locos, please let me know. I believe there's a ton of good modelers out there just waiting on drawings. The general lack of specifications and blueprints/drawings have led some to model from pictures. I've done it myself--it's harder to do, and many times it's guesswork as to dimensions. Rick, thanks again! You filled the void.GEU50B – image 6

Kasaba,Take heed to what you say. The GEU50B's are a great set of engines. They #1 are what inspired me to do the DD35's. Also what inspired me was the get a program and build one comments. I agree with the guys above if you don't like it build it yourself - and IF you think it is good enough upload it - That's the true test.

RE: GEU50B

Hey Guys,Don't be too hard on Kasaba, he has a right to ask for a more detailed model and get one if someone has the time.....yes I think I did a good job on this set of engines, but it could be better....and I might go about making the see-thru fans and cab for the units...but right now I am working on the EF-4 and busy with that project, so when I get some time, I will look into improving this model.
Comments and critisism is always welcomed and persons making such comments should not be hammered by the community....after all we all have our opinions about what is great, good or just ok. RIGHT.
Enough said.Rick

RE: GEU50B

But there aren't rotating on my computer I'm not joking !!!!
Also the trucks which are on both sides of fuel tanker are not folowing the line that's not real .look GAS TURBINE 4500 hp trucks I think are the same as U50B.the trucks in the both ends are fine.I gave you an ides to put truck from the last newest files - from RS-11 to look more and more realistick. If I was able to work with G-MAX I would made it ,but I can't

Milen,The wheel rotation problem is at your end not with the model...as for the trucks I am not going to re-do them....if you want to make the U50B then feel free and make the trucks however you like them..Rick

RE: GEU50B

Rick, I get the impression, and I'm not sure where I got it from, that you were working with TSM. If so, would you be willing to part with your model or drawings you used to make the U50. If you would, I'd like to take a crack at some of the detailing--of course, I would give you credit for your work. I like to do the modeling just for the joy of doing it. Consequently, I release all the models I developed fully myself in the public domain. If I start with someone else's model then I ask that would-be modelers receive permission from the original designer before releasing the construction model. I figure if anyone wants to use my work--have at it. I look at each model as a challenge. To me the fun is in the modelling, not in trying to please everybody. If someone doesn't like what I've done then they have my model available to improve on--if they don't, then they really have nothing to say!Dave Dandy

RE: GEU50B

Rick, Thanks for the offer. I have TSM, 3D Canvas, and GMAX. However the one I know the least of and the one I have not really used is 3D Canvas. I really appreciate your offer, but I don't think I'm ready for 3D Canvas just yet. If you have drawings that you used to create the model, I would really appreciate them. I know TSM well and am starting to get along pretty good in GMAX. Again thanks for the offer of the model, but it's beyond me right now. If you do have drawings, I have an email account at briansdad@netzero.netDave Dandy

If anyone wants to use my RS-11 trucks I will send them by email. I created them with GMax. But be aware that they are highly detailed with 900+ polys per truck. That may cause MSTS to crash when two of them are very close to each other. And it may take a few days, I'm having some trouble with my computer, will reinstall the operating system on saturday.------------------------------

I'me not sure but I think either the turbines used U50 trucks or the U50 used turbine trucks. Hope this might help.

Rick would have to do that himself. One reason is that only he has the files required for this operation and the other is that it is his model and I would, even if I was able to, never do changes on someone else's work (except having permission by the creator).------------------------------

RE: GEU50B

Here's some real basic work. Lacking any drawings, I have had to use photos or screen captures of Rick's U50B to assist in my effort. I did find information saying the the U50B for Union Pacific used the span bolsters from the 4500 turbine. So I used the drawings I found of the 4500 turbine to work the under carriage. This may not be accurate, but it is a starting point. I also have used Ricks textures to make these. Since it does use span bolsters and uses more trucks than MSTS cares to animate, I approached this project as if it were a schnabel car. This picture is actually a consist of three vehicles--the front span bolster, the body (represented only by two boxes at this time), and the rear bolster. By doing it that way, the span bolster function as bogies of the body and each pair of trucks as the bogies for the span. This lets all the bogies be animated as well as the bolsters too (well sort of!). The body employs reference points only for the two bolsters so the loco will appear to pivot around the bolsters. It also appears that TSM is the least forgiving of the modeling programs when it comes time for MSTS to display the model. So building it as three units will allow for more parts/polys in the long run. Currently, each bolster set w/trucks is around 3200 polys. Well, here it is! remember, the body has not been started and the body represented here is only for spacing purposes. There are also some parts and more texturing needed on the span bolsters as well.Dave
