I want to start to reduce the size of some of the .ace files in the Trainset directory. If I look at the .ace for a boxcar in question it says it is 24 bit + Trans and is about 1.2MB. If I compress with makeace, the new file is shown as 32 bit (Compressed) and is around 600KB. Will this new file still look the same?
< Will this new file still look the same? > All depends on which format you use to compress the ace file, I will most probably open a can of worms here and be asking for trouble for what I am about to say but................. If you use the ZLib compression option you will get less file degradation than if you use the DXT compression most of the time. Occassionally you get some degradation regardless of the type of compression used. I have found some ace files with an alpha channel can lose colour structure when compressed using DXT, also must remember to decide on whether you want 1-bit or 8-bit transparency mask when compressing, some files are happy with 8-bit and dont lose colour etc while others like a 1-bit mask.Only trial and error will show if the file you compress will degrade in quality, as always follow the 2 Golden Rules when altering filesRule #1. Back the file upRule #2. Never forget Rule #1Stew aka 6330trainfan Albany WA Australia
