Hey Folks,I have been working on this model for about a week now and it is already to have the final lighting and some tweaking of the model to complete....however, I followed the instructions for the pantograph animation and it doesn't work for me....if someone with knowledge of 3D Canvas and this animation sequence would give a hand it would be appreciated. The instructions I followed came from ChrisTrains website. Here are a few pics of the model working in MSTS...Rick

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-04 AT 01:36 PM (EDT)

They didn't Jake....
This is obviously based on the Lionel Rectumfire as you so astutely pointed out! VGN had a Hood type Road Switcher style/Electric freight locomotive using rectified AC (11kv @ 25hz) which they called the EL-C IIRC...
When the N&W ate the VGN and dropped the wires they were sold to the NH where they became EF4s...
After the PC take over of NH they were reclassified as E33s....
And placed in the same service Pool as the E44s and E44a....Several interesting facts...
The Ignitron Rectifier system was loosely based on the NH EP5...
These units were geared for mountain coal hauling and so topped out (Balanced) at some thing like 51mph.... They were drag engines pure and simple unlike the E44s which had the ability to run up to 65mph or so... The EP5s, the E33s and the E44s all had 3 axle "C" trucks!
Definately not AAR type Bs.

RE: GE E33

Hey Chuck,Yes this was modeled after the Lionel Rectifier which is the only good photographic info I could find about this unit (fake as it was) on the internet....I followed the Lionel model as close as possible and it had no exact measurements so it was wagged to get this far....
As for the Road names Lionel had 4-5 VGN, PC, NH, Penn and another one I can't remember....I will release all of these Lionel named paint schemes when the model is finished...
Thanks for everyone kicking in their two cents worth on this....and to Wayne for the correct naming convention for the Panotgraph operation....Wayne the ChrisTrains website had them named PantoMid1A and such not PantographMiddle1A, which 3DC and MSTS didn't like. All works well with the pantograph and I need to find a suitable Cab to use then finish lighting and some ENG file work....maybe another week for this one to be done and then each week I will do the other paint schemes.....later.Rick

Rick
Looks good but I think Jake is right on the 6 axle trucks take a look at pics of other GE juice motors in that series they've got Alco 600 series style sideframes.
As to the pantographs the animation is,at least to me eye candy since the E33 had a bidirectional pan constant up should not be a problem no matter what way the loco is oriented,if it were an E44 that could be a problem but Tim Muir solved that problem with the box cab by making a trailing direction AI locoGary S

RE: GE E33

I've done plenty of pans with 3DC and may be able to help. When you say 'it doesn't work' what do you mean? ie it doesn't move, or it moves the wrong way? Your heirarchy should look like this:Main
--PantographBottom1A
----PantographMiddle1A
--------PantographTop1A
--PantographBottom1B
----PantographMiddle1B
etcPantographBottom1A and PantographBottom1B should both be children of Main. Provide some more details and I may be able to help.Wayne

RE: GE E33

Hi Guys,I have been to Fallen Flags and other sites for reference materials and found about all there was for the 4 axles unit I modeled...I know it was just the Lionel toy that I created but I modeled it and there it is....as for future models of this type of unit...I may work on an E44 but one has already been done and is in the file library...Anyway thanks guys for all the info and comments, I am pretty much done with the actual visual model of the E33 so I will finish the paint schemes and other work to be done then move onto something else. Thanks again,Rick

RE: GE E33

Rick you miss our point son! There was no such prototype Electric Motor!!!!!Now if you say that you modeled the Lionel Toy Train then we will shut up and go away... Most of us think you are mistakenly modeling the Lionel Toy and thinking it's modeled after a real prototype!Chuck Schneider

It seems that he did Chuck.Rick wrote, not in whole:
"I know it was just the Lionel toy that I created but I modeled it and there it is....as for future models of this type of unit."I dunno, seems pretty clear to me. Maybe I'm losing something in the English-to-Canadian translation though. Nice work Rick.DanAbsolute power corrupts absolutely.

RE: GE E33

You're right Dan I did miss that....But I still wish he wouldn't call it an E33 as it's not....
It wasn't when Lionel created the O-27 original and the V-Scale model he just created isn't either....I suspect that a few NH and VGN fans might agree with me....Chuck Schneider

RE: GE E33

Hi Chuck,As Phil pointed out I was just modeling a model.....nothin more or less...as for the type number on it I had nothing to go on but the resources I discovered from pics of the Lionel model and they were listed as E33's so I went with it.....If there is an actual designation for this unit I will make the alterations in the readme...if not then it stands as E33...I think you mentioned that this might have been EL-C IIRC if this is correct let me know.Later,Rick

RE: GE E33

Hi Rick,
Nice job as always!
Why not call it the E33X passenger prototype? Surely such an experimental concept could have been built.

Just posted the link since you'd mentioned not finding any ref pics and thought that there might be an off chance you weren't aware of the FF site(great reference source)and at least you'd have the info if you ever took a fancy to do an actual E33(however the "experimental" passenger version explenation works)Gary S

RE: GE E33

Hey,Thanks, Gary and Bob I will go with the experimental idea....
And thanks for all the info sites....pretty much seen 'em though,
I searched for 3 days off and on for info about these babies and came up with just a few pics of the 4 axle version from Lionel...I decided since someone had already done a 6 axle version I would just do the model....I may go back and do the 6 axle after all.
If anyone has the actual dimensions of the E33 or E44 I would appreciate the info or link.

Check the FF site, there is a link somewhere on there for manuals and such and there may be manuals for the E33 or E44(it'd be reasonably close)a lot of times these manuals have the basic overall sizes and suchGary S

RE: GE E33

You should check out the fallen flags site. The Pennsylvania has diagrams for E44s and there are also quite a few pics of both E44s and E33 on the Penn Central. Also the November 03 edition of Trains had an article on the E33s from their beginning as Virginian to the retirement on Conrail. It would be worth looking into. Some things I would say about your model. If you keep it with b trucks I would suggest putting on AAR type B trucks instead of EMD blombergs - it would make it more plausible. But since it's free country do as you please (I made a somewhat Alco based narrow gauge diesel switcher and took all sorts of liberties with it.) I would say though, if you want to make it into an actual factual E33, don't model the trucks after the Alco Tri Mount C trucks because that's not what they were. They look like the same trucks that GE used on their early C trucked U-boats. Hope you don't mind wading through my disertation and maybe (hope upon hope) I might have helped you. Hasta la vista.

Try
http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/manual/manual.html
about half way down you'll find the operators manual for the E44(as well as a whole bunch of other neat manuals(just a note sometimes the manuals have size data and such)http://prr.railfan.net/
Check equipment diagrams and if you scan down further MOW plans.
No E33(obviously not on site till the PC merger) but the E44 is there fortunatley the Standard Railroad of the World was so anal about record keeping there's records for every loco the Pennsy owned til the merger even "off the shelf" EMD,Alco,Baldwin,GE,etc locosGary S
