Thanks Rob...no, that's my oldest son..the EMT turned engineer (at lease here in this shot.) I'm an old goat..full aches and pains, and the ever present senior moment. Now that I have the truck worked out on this thing, I may try to squeeze a CB&Q SD40 with then oscilating nose light..if I get time..the color's almost right, the trucks are right for a "Q" version..we'll see.Paul Fowler

>Just out of curiosity, what's the difference between an SD40
>and an SD40X? I believe its the extra fans (4 for radiator or 2 for DB) and the winged radiators in the back. HP is up over 3000 also I believe. Perhasp others can elaborate.IIRC, the SD40X was an experimental precursor to the SD50.GH2

RE: New SD40X (pics)

GM&O 950 was ex-EMD X-434 demonstrator, built in 1964. GM&O only had one, this one.It is a 3000 HP locomotive, virtually a GP40 on an SD35 frame. This coming from a GM&O Master Mechanic I knew back in those days.Paul Fowler

Yepper..there were obviously more than one version of the SD40X..that looks like a dash 2..a version made after the GM&O 950.The GM&O 950 did not have a flaired long hood.Edit: Here's a URL to a photo of the 950.New SD40X (pics) – image 9I think it's on Jim Duncan's website.Paul Fowler

Good job, Paul! Thanks for the tidbit of information. I thought all SD-40X's had flared radiators like the '45's, but there you go. Learn something every day. You do make nice engines. cheers,
Ernie
