This is in reference to the response to my first post. Here's what I have so far, and it doesn't necessarily represent the finished engine, as I'm making changes along the way. The textures shown are some tests I've been doing. I'm fairly new to 3D modeling and I've only completed one other engine. It's my goal to finish this engine and when I do, I'll share it. Don't expect it to be on the level of so many of the excellent models being offered now by so many excellent modelers. Maybe when you press the '4' key and watch it go by, it won't look so bad. A couple of you have offered your help and I'll gladly accept. Thanks much.Mike Adams

Mike,Not bad. Just remember to take your time and put as much "Quality Control" into it as you can. You are off to a good start, so please keep up the excellent job. From what I am assuming from your snapshot, I can see you have a texture on the rear truck and some textures on the main rods. I look forward to seing how your reindition of #600 turns out.

That is BEAUTIFUL! Remeber black, gold or dark to medium yellow, and Tuscan red. I do not know the typeface they used for her number and tender, but I can find out.

We all know that the only good steam was Roanoke built, and it is about time that someone took on this project. I hope that you do finish it, but please take as much time as you need, we would hate to rush you.

Lookin' GREAT! All hope may not be lost if I botch mine up Seriously, I'd like actually get mine up and running in the sim. I worked a bit on it yesterday, mostly fixing up the main drivers. I'm building it in two seperate pieces: the top half with the streamlined cowling, cab and pilot, and the chassis with the drivers and all the wheels. I'll try to finish the chassis and get it working first, since it would be much harder to complete.
Keep up the great work!!
Have a nice day

Hey, we think alike. I'm building mine in exactly the same way. Your valve gear looks really good(as does the rest). Hope I can get mine looking that good. Thanks much.Mike Adams

Unfortunately the other post concerning your J class got locked, so I'll post some info here that I would have posted there for you. Here's a database of 800+ historic N&W pics that might show the other side of an unclad J. Can't promise anything, but it's worth a look.http://imagebase.lib.vt.edu/browse.php?folio_ID=/ns/steam_locomotivesGood luck with the loco, looks good so far.Cliff

Thanks Cliff,I believe I've looked through this database, but it won't hurt to look again. There are a lot of photos there and I could have missed a few (or a lot). Thanks for the good word.Mike Adams

Well for 1, if I'm not mistaken, there are some major design differences between the original 10 unstreamlined (later streamlined after the war) and the later Js. They had some differences around the cylinders, as a friend told me.N&W Class J 4-8-4 #600 – image 14N&W Class J 4-8-4 #600 – image 15

RE: N&W Class J 4-8-4 #600

I sure your right about other major differences in the earlier J's. However the first 5 (600-604) were built streamlined. J1's 605-610, built in 1943, were unstreamlined. They were streamlined after the war and reclassed a J's.Mike Adams
