The Gallery Cars

Heres my newsest version of the gallery car. I tried exporting it but TS crashes when i load it. It works in .s veiwer and conbuilder has noting to say. if somone would like to help out with that that would be great. I added a proper hor, bell, grab irons, and ladders. Try a check in TSM for geometry errors. This will probably fix your problem. Whilst you are at it, also check for orphaned points and get rid of those. Make sure that the pivot point for the main part is centered on the origin, and double check your hierachy.Above all else, before exporting the model to MSTS again - make sure it has wheels.Model looks really good. Nice texture work. Bogies need work though.

>count, 5612. No ... I've seen models over 10000 polys built in TSM go into the sim without a hitch. Also check your material specs. For TSM try not to use more than 2 types of materials.

It just wont load. Heirichy is correct, i only used one material, part geometry is fixed, and orphaned parts are removed. Ill gladely send the file to somone to have a look at it.Central Illinois Locomotive Works

When you open the shape in SFV do you get a message to the right of the LOD window that says something to the affect of "error 9: subscript out of range"?Regards,

I've managed to get your model into the sim. There were a lot of errors and first off, the bogies do need to named bogie1 and bogie2 and not "trucks".You had 3 copies of the main hull on top of each other.There were no wheels plus you need to specify 9 frames of animation.Your complex details parts - one of them is built in a manner that MSTS disagreed with, to get the model into sim I removed them all. When you get the file back put back each part until it fails again. Then delete the offending part and rebuild it in a manner that is agreeable with the sim - avoid over complex constructions.Finally, I've notice that your side texture is taken straight from James Hunt and Sean Lim's Amtrak coach set's texture map. I know both those guys and they are pretty easy going about sharing, so I suggest that before proceeding too far forward into your project, you might want to drop one of them a note asking for permission? I am absolutely sure both those guys will be agreeable ...Cheers:

Looks great, but one thing I notice is that the front door seems to be even with the mating surface of the diaphragm....it should be even with the car ends on either side of the diaphragm.Keep up the good work!

The Gallery Cars take their first run on the NEC. All that is left is the reporting marks, lighting, passenger veiw, cab, and sounds. Their looking pretty good. Ill post pics when i finish reporting marks.Central Illinois Locomotive Works

The cars are coming along nicely, keep up the great work. Just 1 thing....The number and the Metra Sign should always be on the left, not on the right like it is on the 2nd picture.You might want to try to find a better looking Metra sign, maybe the one below, but all in all it looks great.

Animated Doors wouldn't work because no electric locomotive pull these Cars.A better sign, better looking trucks (I know they were not finished in last photos) and cow catcher detail.

The cars are lookin pretty good, keep up the great work.Another neat Metra project would be doing the new cars. The cars are very similar to the ones currently being modeled, they just have bigger windows.

Sounds great, you might want to make the red just a little bit darker, and yeah the bell does need to get moved in front, but I thought it was on the left.

If you are looking at the front of the car, it needs to be right behind the cow catcher in front of the front truck.

Dude John-
the bell on the 7500 series and the new 8500 series (I think those are the right numbers) is on the left side of the car, right behind the truck. If you ride on the first floor, the 4th or 5th seat back on the left, its very obvious youre sitting right above it. Its mounted there on the BNSF cab cars as well. As for the old CNW cabs, it was mounted on the front, not under the car, and was the "Gong" type used by CNW on many of thei freight engines.
The new 6000 and 8500 series cars have the biggest windows Ive ever seen in my life-the car is like half windows lol! After riding in one, the big windows are nice, as are the LED message boards...the cars on Metra just get better. Now if we could just do something about the MP36's....i.e. get RID of them....and yes, every Metra engineer Ive talked to has nothing good to say about them except that they stop well. There is a laundry list of complaints about them...but my big thing is theyre just downright ugly.Kevin V.

Oakway
Another thing to remember on the smoothside ex C&NW/RI is they had no ditch lights,one of the reasons for their relegation to mid consist cars(and eventual retirement) is ditch lights cannot be mounted on them for some reason,in addition those cars had the side marker lamps(red/rear,green/field,green/front) and the head lamps and emergency red mars light was surface mounted as opposed to the flush mount.

Yo Kev. Heh, I seen the bell all over the place on those cab cars. I know for a fact though and I have it on video, that the bell on the cab car he is modeling with the K5LA is on the right side right behind the cow catcher.

lol i'll agree with that statement about them being all over. I think it depends on the series of the cars. I hadnt seen a number on it so i assumed (theres a mistake) what it was. the new 8500's have them on the left side (at least some do). But yeah youre right now that i think of it, they are on the right. good catch man! (I should know, I ride in them every sunday!)btw...I got into the cab car of a BNSF Metra car, the engineer let me see it...can you say tight fit?
It had cab signals in it...can anyone tell me why? the BNSF doesnt use cab signaling...did CB&Q use to? Does the indicator always stay at green?thanksKevin V.

Just pulling this out of the air but if it's a Metra cab car it may be currently running the Q now but tomrrow or next week it may be on ex RI,WAB,MILW,SOO,GMO or CNW.
I don't belive the Q used cab signals but until recently IIRC the former CNW lines had ATC(that's why you always saw a CNW on point of any frieghts)I don't know if a similar system was in use on any of the other lines but it would stand to reason that to have a cab outfitted for use on any of the lines would be useful.Gary S

I know the UP still has it installed on the northwest line to harvard, not sure about the other ones though. The reason I ask is because this being an ex-CB&Q car, it carries the BNSF logo near the door as these cars are relegated to the BNSF line. I would indeed be very suprised to see one of the BNSF cab cars on another metra line. Im not talking about the new ones with the big windows etc, but one of the old Q cars from the 60's, I believe built by Budd. Kevin V.

Hey-Rode the UP metra line this weekend and took note of the bell on the cab cars which are of the type your building. The bell on every one of them is in front of the truck on the fireman's (left) side of the car. I checked on everyone of them at the ogilvie station as I ahd time to kill before my train. I can tell you how many UP employees asked me what I was doing...but one of them let me take a look at the cab of the cab cars...theyre pretty nice, but understandably, wouldnt let me take pictures.Kevin V.

Hi,
Heres whats been going on. I started on the sounds, theyre no coming near done. Im redoing the cabs and if they dont work, i dont know. I need a person for light if i cant find one, ill try it myself. I never did lights before. Model is pretty much done exept for the passenger view. Textures are done exept for the tiny metra sign on the smoothsides. Heres a list of what to expect in the uploaded version:

I have sounds 90% completed along with a new AA-2 Horn and K5LA horn that i am getting permissiom from 5 Chime Consultants. I'll put a recording in a liitle while. I also have a few updates on textures. I noticed a few bugs but they're fixed. No work on cab since my last post. Actually once you're done with the model provide me with a reversed model and I will add trailing marker lights for PULL operation. SFM can reverse it.Tim Frost

No, you misunderstand me. If you use the same engine as a cab car and just turn it around in a consist where you are operating from the locomotive, the wheels will rotate backwards and the bogies will turn the opposite way from the curves.A reversed model is so that when you are building a consist, it is just a coach, instead of an engine, and the model has been flipped with SFM so as when you add it to the consist you do not have to reverse it within the consist.If you have the Surfliner, all the consists where the locomotives are pulling the train have a reversed Cab-Car model on the end of the train, not the same engine as you would use to drive from.Using a reversed model with just a WAG instead of an ENG file means your train will not be overpowered and then the wheels and trucks will turn in the right direction.I hope that's a more satisfactory explanation.Tim Frost

I almost have the front veiw done so i went to animate it but it wouldnt load. I got the send dont send message. I have to make a decision here weather to make it a static cab or find another person to do it. If i had my MSTS cd id just reinstall it but its missing. Ok, all that is left now is the reverse lighting. Cab is done but it is static. Lighting is done. Maybee next week theyll be in beta.
