Hello! Here are a couple pics of my first TSM locomotive project. Still a ways to go yet. It will be representative of the GP9's manufactured by EMD using components from FT trade-ins. The units were operated long hood forward, had dynamic brakes and 1750hp.Bob

Actually, the GN GP9m only had the 1,350 HP of the FT. There is one on Ron Paludan's website. Some other RRs had GP9m with the 1,750 HP but not the GN. Also, they did not have dynamic brakes at GN, but those were added later by BN. At GN they were also known as a GP5.

RE: Great Northern GP9m

Hello Bob,You are partially correct, GN did purchase GP9m's w/o dynamic brake and rated at 1350hp. That was the second order, and utilized the original engine and traction motors from the FT trade ins. The first order was manufactured to EMD Specification #801 (March 14, 1956), which outlines manufacture of a locomotive to NEW Spec. #8031, with the following exceptions: 16-567-A Engine disassembled, specified parts cleaned, inspected and rebuilt, and used in the assembly of the 16-567-C engine. Original auxiliary generator given basic rebuild. FT tracion motors given basic rebuild, and stators converted to D37 specifications. FT trucks disassembled, cleaned, inspected and reassembled. New GP9 brake rigging applied. Model WXE air compressor rebuilt and converted to model WXO.

FT reverser and voltage regulator switchgear rebuilt and installed. FT A-unit batteries removed, cleaned, inspected and recharged. Applied if capacity tests 80% or greater. FT B-unit batteries replaced with new batteries. The following optional equipment installed: Multiple-unit control. Gardner-Denver model WXG oversized air compressor. Snow plow pilot both ends. 700-amp high capacity dynamic brakes. 1700 gallon fuel tank. The units were numbered 723-727, and used parts from FT's 250A, 250B, 251A, 251B, and 401C.
The second order for GP9m's using FT parts were numbers 900-903, were rated at 1350hp, and did not have dynamic brake (these are the "GP5 units). They used parts from FT's 253A, 253B, 255A and 255B.These GN units were among the first produced by the EMD remanufacturing program. The 900-903 were the last GP9's purchased by GN. With the introduction of the GP20, EMD touted it's remanufacturing program as a "unit reduction" program.Once I complete this model, I may tackle one of those 1350hp units!Bob

Hi Bob,
I honestly wasn't trying to embarass you! I just had seen those other data and some in hardcopy that seemed different than your source.
One thing if I might suggest, you have a really great start on something we don't have, a high hood GN GP20.

and the BN version which followed as a result of the merger.

RE: Great Northern GP9m

Hello Bob!Yes, I have considered the GN GP20, and if all goes well with this project, I may tackle that one next, along with a variant for Western Pacific (with the barrel headlights)!Bob

RE: Great Northern GP9m

You mean like one of these. Since this pic was taken I've added the fuel tank and several other details. This happens to be my first gmax project, so I thought I would do something easy like a diesel first. I'm waiting to add the trucks until last, that way I can place as much detail into them as possible while staying under budget. It features the 900 gallon fuel tank, is set up for long hood forward ops, and has the GN unique 4 step end platforms. After completion I flip it around and make a WP unit out of it.

RE: Great Northern GP9m

Hi Chris, do you know how close your GP9m is to the type the Minneapolis and St. Louis had? I think the M&STL had one more fan between the cab and the exhaust stack.Jack
