On a model I am working on, I keep getting this strange problem with textures disappearing after exiting and restarting the program.
The object has about 170 faces. I texture it completely, then compress, optimize and compact all, and then save the model (before exiting everything looks as it should). I then shut down 3DC and restart it only to find that the object is no longer textured. This has happened many times, mostly on this one model, but also on a couple of others.
I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and may have a solution. I have the latest version of 3DC - 6.5.0.2.
Thanks in advance! Mykel

Try saving it immediately after you texture it before you do any other operation. Then re-load the model. Why are you compressing the object when it is only 170 faces ?
I would use compact all at the end when you have finished your model and are ready for export. Also be aware that 'compact all' removes all object layers other than the current layer. Are you doing any other object operations to your model after applying textures ? Make sure also that your textures live in the same folder as your model as this can help. Was the model originally created in 6.5.0.2 or a previous version ?I have not encountered anything even similar to what you have described.

RE: 3D-Canvas Texturing Problem

The model was begun using a previous version of 3DC.
Actually, it is a box car and the only thing I am having problems with this occuring on are the trucks. I did the body and details and so far the textures have remained mapped properly (knock on wood). But the trucks and wheels keep loosing the texture mapping when closing 3DC and starting it again.
As for compressing and "compact all", basically I am at the end of mapping the model, so I was doing this before exporting.
Now that I think about it, the truck textures are not in the same folder as the model (model and main textures are in a sub folder in the main folder). Will have to move them to see what happens, but this was not a problem in the last version, I don't think. It seems simple enough.
Thanks for the reply!Mykel

RE: 3D-Canvas Texturing Problem

Usually 3DC models like their textures in the same folder. You can have 2 different tex files or more, but I had disappearing textures too until I read somewhere to have the texture and *.3dc files together in the same folder. This is for "building" only. Once the model is exported, it won't matter. Good Luck!!Kip

A little background info...The "default" location for textures CHANGED between version 5 and version 6. There may be some lingering confusion about this.3D Canvas *WILL* remove textures it cannot locate.Kip's recommendation will likely resolve the issue. I have also found that placing the textures for a model IN the same directory as the 3DC file gives the best results.
I work from a "projects" directory in "My Documents" with a subdirectory for each item I'm working on. Everything needed by a project is placed in "that" projects directory. The added benefit is that you now can save your work a complete project by saving just the contents of the directory.Pete Willard

RE: 3D-Canvas Texturing Problem

Thanks for the replies! It seems that having the texture in the same folder as the model has fixed this! Textured the trucks and so far no mysterious missing textures upon loading again. I did not think it would matter to much seeing all files were in the 3DC folder, but that is what I get for thinking.
Thanks again and have a good weekend!Mykel
