Aug-15-01, 07:03 AM (EST) "Baldwin Mountain Climber 4-8-8-4" Is there anyone out there with the talent to make a hearty baldwin mountain climber like a 4-8-8-4. There are probably thousands like who are patiently waiting for one good steam locomotive to be posted. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Baldwin Mountain Climber 4-8-8-4" Personally I think the Pacific and Hudson are both pretty good, but I suspect you really were trying to say was "a really good BIG steam engine I'm looking forware to some of those myself. Aug-15-01, 03:38 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Baldwin Mountain Climber 4-8-8-4" Make mine an H-8 Alleghany 2-6-6-6, the most powerful steam loco ever built. It had a drawbar horsepower just short of 7,500 or almost 10,000kw. Only two survive to this day...both in museums. That horsepower is a fair bit above the 4-8-8-4 UP BigBoys...they developed 6,290hp. But I won't quibble...I'd like to see any of the following: the UP Challenger class 4-6-6-4, or the Big Boy 4-8-8-4, or the M3 Yellowstone 2-8-8-4, or the 5001 Class 2-10-4 (or the Lima "Texas") or the UP 9000 4-12-2. For foreign locos, I'd LOVE to see the hugely unique 231-132BT Class 4-6-2 + 2-6-4 locomotive built by Beyer-Garratt. What a roundhouse lineup all these would be!!bill Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I'll stand back on the sidelines and be patient.....Don

>just Alco, While I will agree that Baldwin never made any 4-8-8-4 steam engines, they actually did make 4-8-8-4's - the Centipedes. Now those are big diesels!!!Tom Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-15-01, 10:01 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Baldwin Mountain Climber 4-8-8-4" One incredible thing is that even though to production centipede had a massive 3000hp for the time, the demonstrator had 6000hp!!! it was because of multiple engines though, and the demo got scrapped a littl whiles later Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I think Roger, aka RvA1, with the Big Steam Project is currently working on a Challenger, which could then be modified further into a Big Boy. The problem with big steam right now is that they are very complex models, and since TS is so new, people are still getting a feel for how to model. Once Abacus' TS Studio is released, I suspect we will see more stuff become available, since making models will be accessable to more people, as you won't need to have the $3500 3Dmax anymore. I think with some waiting, a time will come when TS hobbyists will be able to get just about any loco their hearts desire. TS is just to new right now. In time it will be like FS. In the meantime, if you're a fan of UP like I am, go get Auran'z DD40X, it's the Big Boy of deisels. The Big Boy is my favorite loco of all time, and I think in time we will have one!
