Aug-15-01, 02:06 AM (EST) "UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" Hello All,Just wanted to let you all know that there is a Challenger in the works. She still has a long way to go, but I'm making headway. I do have to ask some questions though. Does anybody know how to get more then one CylinderFX into the engine file and have anybody figured out how to make the bell work in a steamer yet.

Aug-15-01, 02:17 AM (EST) 2. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" multiple steam effects no. Bell yes! I have managed this but after the bell rings the cat dies. I'm not shure if its the looping in my bell file or the numer of active streams in the sound file. I'm a total green hacker at that but hey I heard the bells on christmas day. Email me Roger and I'll send you the file.John FowlisPs like the start you have made. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-15-01, 07:31 AM (EST) 3. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" It's looking good RvA1!!Truthfully, the current steam locomotive physics don't appear to handle mallet type locos, with two sets of (hi & low pressure) cylinders. However, in the steam loco .eng file the number of cylinders is defined, the line in question is:"NumCylinders ( 2 )"
I don't know what effect changing this figure ( 2 ) has, but I intend carrying out further extensive tweaking (and screwing up) the steam loco .eng file in the quest for further knowledge My attempts to add two sets of cylinder cock steam exhausts has failed so far. Also, it appears you can have only one smoke plume, altho you can vary the nozzle width - which would be useful for double stack locos such as BB and Challenger. The .eng file also mentions a "DrainpipeFX" but I don't recollect seeing this in action?! (Any comments?)
With a large American steam loco, such as the two I've mentioned, you will not be able to have an auto stoker, but you should be able to up the hand coaling rate substancially, and recommend people use the auto fireman to manage the fire.Meantime, keep up the good work, or should that be 'keep up the good battle'?Don't let the computer WIN! Have you tried Kevin Combs diesel switcher SW1200?
That engine has two smoke plumes. With this one and the Garrat that's in another thread it looks like we will be able to have some really heavy steam freight activities!

Aug-16-01, 01:21 AM (EST) 6. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" Hello All,Thank you for all the kind words, here is another update of what was done tonight Message Areas - "UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" – image 4Captain Bazza:
It's truly a shame that the fellows over at Kuju didn't think we would make these engines. I have tried every combination of variables in the eng file trying to get the second set of cylinders t kick in but I have not been successful either. The drain pipes I believe are on the rear end of the loco. I haven't seen them do anything, but that's not to say that they won't. And I do believe "Battle" would be the right word cjmaclean:I'm trying my best!FreightCowboy:
I struck out on my own with this one. I figured I would learn what I needed before I tried the Big Boy or the Yellowstone. I haven't heard a word from the BSP, so I have no clue if it's still a viable site or not. The site is still up but it's been very quite over there so say the least.
Best,Roger

Aug-16-01, 01:50 AM (EST) 9. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" Thank you CP.Say weren't you looking for some steamers for a route or something like that? If you are and there not done once I get my projects squared away here maybe I can make one or two for you. Providing John doesn't model all the steamers that ever ran on the North American Continent first..... j/k John Roger

Aug-16-01, 01:49 AM (EST) 8. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" I am planning on trying some of N&W's big steamers as well. What I've considered so far is naming the rear engine wheels as rods, based on what I've picked up from previous discussions (you can't have three bogies, or more than 4 drivers, as I understand it.) I'd appreciate any advice as you work through this. My thinking is that on artuiculateds, the front engine is more prone to slipping than the rear engine. Aug-16-01, 02:05 AM (EST) 10. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-01 AT 02:06 AM (EST)Hello nw_fan,Sure if you need any help just drop me a note, and I'd be glad to help you along. I did a test to see how many wheels I could get turning, I had a full set Big Boy wheels running 4-8-8-4 and I used just the WHEELS variable. I'll have to dig that mesh out again and see how I did it though. I have no luck at all so far with more then two bogies on one engine. So what I did here on the Challenger was to attach the pilot wheels to the front drivers, the second set of driver to the main mesh, and left the pony's as the second bogie. Worked out well, the front drivers and the pilot wheels only de-rail slightly going around sharp bends, the boiler seems to swing close to the prototype pics that I have found so I decided to leave it at that for now. I can only hope Kuju will work on this for the possible "patch" or if not then at least in the next version of the sim. As far a slipping goes I simply don't know how it's set up in the sim. I'm sure Kuju wasn't thinking about having 16 or more drivers when they put this sim together. I know from reading in the tech docs that the engine file will only use 12 wheels for driving so that's going to really play around with the pulling of these large engines. The adventure continues....Best,Roger Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Here is the loco I'm working on in 3dCanvasPro. It is N&W's Class K2a 4-8-2, little brother to the more famous Class J 611.Message Areas - "UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" – image 5 I need help getting the other types of files into the simulator besides the .s file and the texture file. Would you be willing to take a look at my file and let me know if I'm on the right track before I export it and give me some constructive criticism (is hierarchy set-up & named right ... what I still need to do to finish...)? Let me know which format (.3DS or .3DC) you want. BTW, I have access to 3DSmax if that's easier. 3DCP is just easier to model in for me. If I get this to work my next project will be N&W's Class A 2-6-6-4 or Y6-b 2-8-8-2. I have the artistic talent & motivation to make this work, but I'm getting hung up in the details of the file specifics.
Thank you
Mike

Aug-16-01, 02:14 AM (EST) 11. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" After I wrote that response, I did some further experiments with the 'number of cylinders' line in the .eng, but had no luck with adding steam cylinder cock exhausts beyond the original 2. My next line of attack (hmmmm, battle reference again) was to split the two exhaust points between the front and rear sets of cylinders and widen the nozzle. (I'm not doing this on a mallet, just experimenting with a standard steamer). So far I've managed to fill the cab with such a blast of steam that no driver and fireman would be able to work in it.Charrrrrrrrrrrrge!Don't let the computer WIN! Aug-16-01, 07:37 PM (EST) 15. "RE: UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger" All I can say Roger, is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a lot of UP fans out here, she truly is a sight to behold. How's the DD35 coming? It would be a great compliment to Auran's DD40. When Abacus' design program comes out, I want to try to do one of the infamous UP gas turbines. Keep up the good work!
