LAST EDITED ON Sep-30-03 AT 05:58 AM (EDT)

This isn't the most requested thing out there but I know more than a few people want one to add to their long-distance consists, especially now that the NALW Megapack with all the Amfleets is out.I've decided to embark on building one. I know quite a bit about 3d modeling from BVE, and just enough about modeling for MSTS to get a good start. However, maybe someone would be willing to help me out with writing the .wag file when the time comes (probably 3-4 weeks) and lighting? Also, any pictures of exterior and interior details, or shapes such as bogies and couplers I can borrow from other models would be appreciated. I can provide an e-mail address on request. Thanks in advance for any replies.EDIT: If anyone else is building one, please let me know. I'd prefer not waste my time starting a project anew and re-inventing the wheel when I can contribute to an existing project and (possibly) make it better.Tim Frost

That's great! We will have:

prototypical superliners (need to be repainted to phase IV also)
prototypical amfleets
prototypical horizon cars (incl. cab cars)
prototypical viewliners
prototypical juicers for the NEC
prototypical amtrak diesels (F59PHI, F40, P32, P40, P42,...)

My suggestion would be to build also the Metroliner EMUs, so that the fleet will be complete.I have a dream! 100% prototypical NEC operations including long distance trains, regional trains, commuter trains, light rail and the occasional freight train. At this point, I again have to thank all members of this community, who are contributing to this wonderful game!Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

There are prototypical Superliners? I haven't seen them yet.Is it the phase III set that is currently available? These are really good cars, but are they prototypical? I think they might be lacking some crucial details. But it could just be me. We do need a very accurate set in phase IV. That includes a transition car.I tried to make my own, but didn't like TSM window problems. And I suck at texturing Viewliner – image 31

The Southwest Chief is what runs over Cajon, I think.I believe it runs today as:P42DC
P42DC
P42DC
P42DC (any of these four can and have been be substituted for other locomotives if they are being moved from CHI to LAX for some reason, also seems to tend to be 3 locomotives, but I've never heard of it being more)

What do they need four locos for this train for? Each one is over 3,000hp, right? That would make 12,000hp, more than for some freight trains and this is just some lousy pax train.... *confused*But regarding consists, we should put together a passenger train's guide for use in passenger activities like what is the typical long distance train (for each route represented in MSTS), trains of the NEC a.s.o.Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

Viewliner – image 42

Yes, each P42DC is 4,250hp. I don't know why they need that much power. It has a lot of 90mph running through AZ and NM and going into CO as I understand it but two locomotives should be sufficient for that, maybe three if there are extra roadrailers. I think the main reason it usually has so many is because they get shuffled around between California and Chicago. The train will come out one day with one consist of 4 working locomotives, then maybe go back with 3 working and one dead-in-tow. I really don't know why they need 4. Keep in mind that one is providing Head-End-Power to the consist and thus has less power available for traction.I think a guide to the usual consists of passenger trains, with one list for peak and one for off-peak would be an excellent idea. I'd be happy to do the trains out here. The ones I have the most contact with are the 5/6 California Zephyr, 11/14 Coast Starlight, and the Capitol Corridor/San Joaquin trains. The California Zephyr usually runs as follows:P42DC
P42DC
Baggage
Transition sleeper
Sleeper
Sleeper + 1 in busy, -1 in slow periods
Dining Car
Observation Lounge
Coach
Coach
Coach + or - 1 depending on load
2 express cars (almost always two both eastbound and westbound)The Coast Starlight generally runs as follows:P42DC
P42DC
Baggage
Transition Sleeper
Sleeper
Sleeper
Pacific Parlour Car (one of these is being made by someone)
Dining Car
Observation Lounge
Coach
Coach
Coach
Coach (doesn't seem to run with less than 4 usually)Rumour has it one of the Pacific Parlour cars is being substituted for by an Observation Lounge. I don't know how much truth there is to that. The Capitol Corridor/San Joaquin trains:F59PHI or P32BWH (either pushing or pulling)
Coach
Coach
Cafe
Coach
Coach/Cab or Coach/BaggageSometimes these trains run as 4-cars and every so often, as 6-car trains, but they always have a cafe car. Once I saw one without a Cab-car in tow, but I don't think this happens very much. I suppose they may occasionally run without a cafe car, but since the San Joaquin trains go such a long distance (400 miles) it would be a big loss for Amtrak (and the poor passengers) if there wasn't one. Most of the Superliners that have had MU wiring added are in service in the SLO-LAX-SAN cooridor but every so often I see one on a Capitol Corridor or San Joaquin train. Amtrak California owns 2 P32BWH's that are in regular service, and many times a Phase IV P32BWH will substitute for an F59PHI.Everything you never wanted to know about the long-distance trains serving California, right? And just to finish it off... the Sunset Limited, which is a 3-day-a-week train from LAX to ORL. It's the longest distance traveled by any one Amtrak train: 2764 miles. Basically it crosses the entire continent at a go. It takes 60 hours if the train is perfectly on time. I don't think it's ever had an on-time arrival. It's generally between 4 and 6 hours late, and unfortunately it is not rare to have an arrival into LAX that is 8-10 hours late. This was definitely an experience I wouldn't mind repeating. Crossing the vast nothing of Texas between El Paso and Alpine... 79mph with the Superliner suspension bottoming out a few times a mile thanks to dips in the track wasn't something I'll soon forget, but was far from harrowing. Ok, enough rambling!P42DC
P42DC
Baggage
Transition Sleeper
Sleeper
Sleeper
Dining Car
Observation Lounge
Coach
Coach
Coach
Coach (note 1)
Sleeper (note 1)These two cars do not make the entire 2764 mile journey with the Sunset Limited. They are cut off in San Antonio and go with the Northbound Texas Eagle, train 22, to Chicago, finishing off their trip after 2728 miles. This requires the Texas Eagle to make seemingly strange 1000-mile inspections on the train. If you need anything else, I can help with a few things somewhat, but as I don't see any other Amtrak trains with any regularity, I'm not quite as useful as I'd like to be. Hope that was helpful.Tim Frost

RE: Viewliner

Viewliner – image 45

Glad I can finally give some info on my favorite train. The SWC needs four locomotives! The SWC has by far the most express and roadrailers of any Amtrak train. There are usualy more boxcars and roadrailers then the total Superliners/baggage car/and locos on this train. On the average SWC you have 4 locos, 1 baggage, and 7-8 Superliners, or a total of 12-13 cars+locos. But boxcars and roadrailers can total up to, the max I've seen, 21! This puts a total car number at 30, not counting locos!

Then there are the two major grades this train must tackle. Cajon, and Raton. But Raton is the main reason for four locos. If Raton wasn't on the line, the SWC could easily get along with three locos. And this is an important reason why Amtrak has been interested in rerouting the SWC to the southern/Belen line.Since the SWC has a lot of cars, several steep grades to deal with, and multiple 90mph districts, Amtrak has to use four locos to safeguard dying on the BNSF high speed freight line. >Okay, maybe they are not really prootypical...
>
>They looked prototypical to me as I am not a bean counter. So far, from what I know, there are no perfectly correct looking Superliners yet. There are good attempts that are currently available, but nothing that will blow your mind away like the new Surfliner cars.I am quite fussy about Superliners, but man do I like them. It's almost an obsesion to me.I have been on countless Superliner trips. I model them in HO. I keep a up to date binder on wrecked and out of service Superliners. I have many photos and videos of Superliners. On every trip, I try to make notes on each cars unique features and I've seen several change over the years. I have a log of every Supeliner I've been inside. I even made the brake/door indication light file for the curently avaliable phase IV Superliners in the download area. But I still wait for the day when perfect Superliners come to MSTS.And by the way, I majored in accounting. Does this make me a bean counter? I've always thought as myself as a rivet counter.
