LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-03 AT 10:23 PM (EDT)

Being a CADmonkey by trade, I thought I'd give a shot at making a switch engine. Created the model in AutoCAD 2000i, saved as .dxf, imported into gmax, put on a few textures (from .ace files from a repaint of Mark Toland's SW1500), exported out as an .s file, created a .sd file, ref entry (as a static model), badabing-badaboom. Place it into a route, and lo and behold it appears, but.... well, I think the pic speaks for itself.< http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3f74f1d52a5d23a9.html>Sooooo, what did I do wrong? I now that size does matter, but... this is kinda ridiculous, isn't it?Any suggest gratefully appreciated.Regards,
MSP

RE: OooooKaaay, so what did I do wrong....?

While in GMAX, try importing one of the sample .3ds files in the "Train Simulator/Samples" Folder to use as size reference.(There are two loco files, Scotsman and Dash9)
Good luck with your model

I'd guess the meter/foot problem too- I've seen that happen many times, unfortunately I've had to take credit for some of them! Just out of curiousity, where do you get AutoCad2000? How much does it cost?Joel Lefever

RE: OooooKaaay, so what did I do wrong....?

Joel,The company I work for has me on AutoCAD 2000i; I purchased my own copy of AutoCAD 2000 2 years ago, and I think I paid $2000 - $2500 for it (inclusive of support & upgrade). It isn't a cheap program, but essential for the type of work I do.I guess I'll go back and dbl-check that I had the units in Gmax set to feet-inches. I could have sworn I'd done that, but....Regards,

it'd be kinda nice if you could release the unit as a drivable model! lol, the R&S used to have two of those.-------------OooooKaaay, so what did I do wrong… ? – image 2

RE: OooooKaaay, so what did I do wrong....?

Joel - you may want to try a scaled-down CAD package. I've got QuickCAD at home, which cost me around $50, and comes in very handy for home projects. It's put out by the same folks who sell AutoCAD, but is a lot less complex (and a lot fewer capabilities). It does what I need it for - line drawings of workbenches, etc. I don't know if it would give you what you need for a Gmax project. I really haven't tried to generate a 3-D rendering of anything I've built, but I don't know if that's what's required. I know QuickCAD will export to file types that Gmax can import. If my memory hasn't gone completely, I bought QuickCAD at Best Buy, so it's somewhat easy to find. I would suggest asking more info about what's required for going from CAD to Gmax, though, if you're going to get it just for that purpose.Andy

I hope you get the size worked out, 'cause that's a really great looking model. I'm looking forward to being able to download it, when you're done. You might want to check out your coupler orientation, though, as the the one we can see appears to be backwards. Wishing you good luck with your project and good simming.

RE: OooooKaaay, so what did I do wrong....?

Well, i'd say that's large scale...
They're right. Your units are screwed up. Depending on the program you're using there may be a way to change that. Problem is I forget exactly how.
