Guess it's no secret that I started working on the Shark locomotive today. I've discovered a rather interesting problem. Namely, that trademark nose. You think the EMD F unit's nose is hard to build? Try making the nose on the Shark. You can't tell it by looking at it directly, but there's a long slow curve, a scalloped side and the curvature and rounding over the sides of the nose. But, I've been playing with it some, and I have some ideas as to how to tackle it...I'll post pics soon as I get a good point to stop at.

RE: SHARK warning!

Grizz
Not 100% sure the RF's arrived on property in time to recive ligntnig stripes, all I've ever seen them in is the cigarband livery.
The RF16 is one of those units that in short order all roads that owned them could be covered.
IIRC
NYC
Monongahila(sp?) NYC livery just the Monongawasitz name in NYC font.
PRR (I think)
D&H
EJ&E short tour of duty on the J and hard to find pics(have yet to find any in color)evidently the Sharks weren't up to the J's lugging needs and so found themselves sold to....
B&O
and of course

Thank you for your work! I presume (in a high-minded arrogant way that would irritate everyone were it not being done in jest) that you'll be producing versions in dark green locomotive enamel and in Tuscan red for the Standard Railroad of the World. If you get the opportunity and the interest, I'd really appreciate a pair in Pennsylvania livery, along with a black/gray/blue Baltimore & Ohio example. Good luck with that nose, and see http://www.byz.org/~morven/Railway32/diesel/index.html for inspiration.

RE: SHARK warning!

To simplify things, I've started using the Pensy engine plans for the template. I've somewhat sorted out the nose, As it stands, I expect that it'll take most of the polys. I can shave stuff off, but it looks like I'll have to make it at least 4 parts. Front, lower sides (the scalloping), upper sides, and nose roof. Thanks for the links. I'm starting over on the nose RIGHT now

RE: SHARK warning!

Well, I've made some progress (No pics yet.) I'm working on that curved pilot right now. Figured I'd tackle that problem first. So far, I see about three ways to deal with it.First, I could chamfer the edges. Sadly that looks like it'll be more of a pain than anything and probably not my choice.Second, I could use a cylinder to model the edge, then delete any polys I don't need.Third, use a seperate set of objects to make this curve.Any other ideas?

RE: SHARK warning!

The shark I'm working on is the freight version. The Blue Goose's nose is slightly different. The upper nose, above the pilot, doesn't worry me as much as the pilot is. oh well, I'm back to work on it.

RE: SHARK warning!

The shark nose is very tough, there are many contours. Good luck, once completed, you'll be a pro at modeling through point manipulation I doodled a partial shark nose in TSM, this is as far as I gotSHARK warning! – image 7SHARK warning! – image 8 J. Hildenbrand------NALW------

RE: SHARK warning!

Soon as I figure out how to take a screenshot in GMAX i'll post what I have so far. It's turning out pretty well but I don't like how the nose looks in general so I'll probably just scratch it (no pun) and start on a new one. If nothing else, this current model helps me sort out what goes where and how I'll tackle the problem.
