I saw a train of Herzog ballast cars a few days ago, and noted these are not yet modeled. For those looking for a project and stumpted for ideas, I would be happy to help, both in doing a set of physics files and some reference assistance.

RE: Herzog ballast cars

Hey Bob, guys, Was that on the old CNW east-west main? WSOR loads those at Rock Springs, WI. I guess they are sattelite controlled for dumping. WE seen the train loaded just east of Sterling on Saturday, and by the time our passenger train came back, it had almost dumpped its whole load, and was back to Global 3!!! (25 miles)the train eventually went east later in the day, and I filmed it in Creston. Earlier this year, my buddy ran one of these trains from Madison down to UP Janesville. 60 cars, all on their maiden fill. Ballast goes hi-tech. lol I can try to get some screens off the tape if needed. ALl they are are the old hi-sided coal gons from the 70's made with two sets of ballast doors. (would be all that would be needed in MSTS)Later!

Hi Kelley,
This was on the UP main just east of Grand Island Nebraska, could have been headed from your direction back to Rock Springs? http://www.herzogcompanies.com/gps_train.htm
The tricky part of these is the dump actuation system beneath the car. There were two dumps on each end connected by some arms and rods.
Pete,
Email is sent

Herzog is working several large jobs around here.
1) they are realigning an old SP Branch to make way for the expansion of Light Rail
2) they are working on another Light Rail expansion
3) I have not found it yet...but I willHere are a few pics of the gondolas they have around here. Every once in a while a few of them will be pressed into MoW service after a derailment.Regards,

Ok, I've spent about an hour on it, but I'm still guessing at dimensions. Anyone have the dimensional data for the HERZOG (Thrall High Side Gondola) they use. Anyone?NOTE: Pic Upload Failed.

RE: Herzog ballast cars

Speaking of ballast cars, I saw the following equiptment consisting of spreader, 20 cars and two SD-40 engines moving east out of Clovis at about 8-10 mph. I guess such a train would really cause tie ups with MSTS on long stretches of track with no sidings!Hopefully, the photos will show up.Bob Edwards
