Atlantic continued… again… and again – image 1

I have now added the gear's axle back onto the atlantic. When I try to test it now, I get the send/don't send message. It doesn't state any particular error, but it just gives me the message. I'll try rebuilding the axle, and see if that helps.mrWM734Atlantic continued… again… and again – image 2

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-03 AT 11:27 AM (EDT)

I found the source of the problem. When I put the exporting setting to the first picture, I get the second picture as a conversion report. How come the textures aren't converted? TSM usually creates "blank.ace" for me because I don't have textures for it yet.mrWM734Atlantic continued… again… and again – image 6

Uncheck the Compress textures box. TSM cannot do that properly, and causes the UID error in MSTS. This fault includes Blank.ace mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

Take the axle out and try again. If it works the problem may lay with the axle, or with the parenting of the axle, probably the second choice. I noticed that you have just about everything parented to the main part on the .dst you sent me. While the number of parts is not that great, it may work if you parent the new axle to something other than the main part.

I'll do that on Sunday. I had trouble with that part before. I'll see how it works. In the meanwhile, I'll recreate the axle. I'll save the recreated part seperately so I can add it in. When I do add it back in, I'll parent it to the second main part instead of the first one.mrWM734Atlantic continued… again… and again – image 14

Working in TSM can be a real pain sometimes, just like the other 3D modelling progs out there, but when it works, and goes into the sim without a hitch, it gives you a lovely warm feeling like, Hey, I just made that!!mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

Which rods are we talking about here?, and which viewport in TSM. I thought that the driverods were those which linked the pistonrod and gearrod. If that is the case then where does the sideways movement come from, because if it has sideways movement then the other rods have it as well and I find that hard to visualise. If you are looking at the model from the side, the top of the gear-rod when animated should pass through the end of the unmoving driverod, with the bottom rotating alongside of the gear. When the drive rod is animated, one end is fixed, and the other end follows the top of the gearrod. If the two do not quite match then go back to the gear rod and redo that frame to get the two parts matching. Once you are happy with the linked motion of those two parts, add the piston rod up and down movement to match the driverod.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-03 AT 04:07 PM (EDT)

OK. The action you need on this part is the same as the rod that connects the piston to the connecting rod on a normal locomotive, but in the vertical plane instead of horizontal. If you look at the action on a normal steamer you will see what I mean. It is rather like the movement of a pendulum with the addition of some vertical movement. The top of the rod must not move in the direction of the horizontal arrow, it has to remain relative to the end of the horizontal rod and only move up and down. The bottom of the rod is the end which travels in both directions as it travels round with the gear. What you have to do is first of all set the motion, which in this case is almost vertical, and then set the rotation, for both the first and last frames in exactly the same position. This will give you a smooth transition as the sequence runs. Then you go back to frame 1 and set motion then rotation and so on through the sequence, remembering that the last frame is already done.Remember the two arrow buttons on the TSM taskbar. The straight one gives straight line movement, and the curved one gives rotational movement. What is needed is how to get the axis onto the top end of the rod, which will make the whole animation easier to do. I seem to remember seeing that somewhere, I'll have a search around for it.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

Right, I've located the method to shift the part axis from the centre to the top. Make sure that the part is not selected(green) and use Shift and the mouse to drag it into position. Once it is there the whole animation becomes very easy with the top end remaining in place when rotation is applied. If you get completely stuck, send me the latest .dst and I'll sort it for you. I have been playing around with the last one you sent over, although I havent done a full animation on it, just proving a few things for myself regarding animation in TSM.mervyn@burse.theboozer.co.uk

That explains it. When I tried to move the part, and put it there for the animation, TSM put it somewhere else. I'll have to try using the shift key.mrWM734Atlantic continued… again… and again – image 45

I tried using Shift + the mouse, but it didn't work. I'll send you the .dst file, so you can see what I've done with it. This way, you can work it around what I tried. The position for frame 1 should be x: 1.689, y: 4.25, and z: 3 if it worked correctly when I tried.mrWM734Atlantic continued… again… and again – image 47

Hah! You've just remade them and I have just got the first one to do what I want it to do. Have you a copy of the gear axle, I would like to tie that into the complete animation of the gear rods so that the bottom of the rods match the rotation of the axle.

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

The first thing I have done is move the pivot point to the top of the rod to allow for the side/side movement like a pendulum. It seems that doing this has changed the part properties because it does not fly away, just stays in place. Having that extra part you sent is making it easy to get the parts in the right place for each frame.mervyn@madasafish.com

That's the one thing I didn't try doing. It makes sense that changing the pivot point would change the properties. The "flying away" was quite a problem for me.edit: heh, my # of posts is 734 backwards.mrWM734B&O Repaint/Locomotive Works Website down

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

The animation seems to be a bit wacky at present, but I have one or two wee tricks to try, one of which should solve it. Parented to the platform the rods dont move, parented to the gear axle, the animation disappears and they rotate complete about the axis of the axle. I remember having a similar problem with one of my current projects a while back, I'll have to think about what I did to get it working.mervyn@madasafish.com

It is working, but not in the right place. I think it is something to do with the positioning of the various axis points and how they interact. I am going to do a dis-assemble/re-assemble and check the axis point of each part as I go.mervyn@madasafish.com

Just been looking at one made by someone else. He took a tube, 5 sections long, with 12 segments. From that he used the scale function to change the diameter of each ring of points to get the bell shape and size. Use the normal Move function to adjust the height position of each set. The hanger or bracket would then be made for it to hang from.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again...and again

Texturing! There are several ways to texture a model or the parts of a model. The larger parts will need to be properly mapped and if you go to the help menu in TSM and look through the exercises you will get the basics of how to make texture maps. It is probably almost as hard as building the model at first but like modelling, gets easier. The smaller parts can just have an appropriate color assigned to them from the texture template by using the part/texture option in TSM and navigating to the correct texture template. Once you have made the basic texture map you have to paint the parts on the map in the colors you want the model to be in. For the smaller parts you add smallish patches of the colors you want to use. This end product is what forms the basis of the ace file generated by the export function of TSM.Once you have had a look at the exercises in the help section, drop me an email and I'll help you all I can. Might be better than making this thread any longer at present.mervyn@madasafish.com
