Atlantic continued… again – image 1

This is a continuation of "Atlantic continued" and "Atlantic". I have fixed the problems with the gear, and I am in the process of rebuilding the piston rods. I have also replaced the wheels. I am still using the old wheels' threads, but I have replaced the sides with squares. Here are some updated pictures of my progress.mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

I have just come across a couple of pictures of the Atlantic, I suspect that it is the rebuild, and not the original, but it would seem that you could make the gearwheel almost half the size it is at present, and move it down in the frames a bit more. Apart from that, it looks about spot on so far.mervyn@madasafish.com

You finally caught on, congratulations! I have been making the model off of pictures of the Andrew Jackson, an 1836 locomotive. The original Atlantic was scrapped a long time ago, and the Andrew Jackson was spared, luckily. The Andrew Jackson was modified in 1927 to look like the Atlantic for the Fair of the Iron Horse, so I used that engine for a basis. On a separate note, I just realised that the gear is indeed too big, and I'll fix that right now. I'm going to move it down while I'm at it.mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

Are you using the old piston rods, and if yes, do they still have animation. If the answer is yes, remove it and try again.

Name your wheels3 back to gear, and just auto-animate wheels1 and wheels2. Also, make sure that they are in the correct order from front to back or they will not animate. Once they are working, do a manual animation for the gear.mervyn@madasafish.com

Thanks, Okrasa and Baldwin. Both of you noticed the type of object was wrong. I didn't even know that you could choose what type. Also, Thanks also for fixing the wheel rotation. I'll remove the small gear, and replace it like I did with the big gear. While I'm at it, I'll eliminate the non-used points. I'm also going to replace the threads of the wheels and fix the parenting. After I do all of that, I'm going to take a well deserved break for about a week. I need some time to relax because I've been working on this project non-stop since about April. Thanks for the help.mrWM734current project: B&O R.R. "Atlantic"

If you have applied the animation in TSM the transfer to MSTS will automatically ensure that the wheels rotate as the engine moves along.mervyn@madasafish.com

How do you choose which you export it as? What I did was I exported it to the NEC v4.0, and moved the .s file into the locomotive's folder. I won't get to test it in MSTS again untill I get MSTS working again. The last time I tried to run MSTS, the window popped up for only a second before closing automatically. I've tried re-installing it, but it has showed no sucess.mrWM734current projects:

Hi!There is a grasshopper underwater in a submerged
quarry outside of Baltimore. I used to do sonar
work there, and the stack was sticking out of
the water. The engine was still on the rails when
the quarry flooded, and it was never recovered.Tony Burzio

Couplers dont work in the normal sense of the word. If you look at various models you will see that UK chain coupled stock has no visible coupler, while stock with automatic couplers has a visible but fixed item. The actual copuling of cars and engines is controlled from within the eng file. So all you need to do is make a coupling to fit on your engine, or not as the case may be.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again

I never did any animation with v1, so dont know how it is done, but I do have v1.1 and all manual animation is done through the Anim button on the toolbar, and is quite easy to do, once you get the method right, and this produces the .mot for you.Having had a look at the .dst you sent over the best point to start is from the gearwheel, and work backwards in the order, gearrod, driverod, pistonrod. This will make sure that all motion matches that of the gearwheel. You can get a free update to TSM v1.1 from here http://trainsimulatorworld.com/share/ just follow the link to Trainsim Modeller and look for the 1.1 update. Its about 11mb and will require the input of your product keycode to use it.mervyn@madasafish.com

First of all, make a copy of all your projects in case something happens to them. If you have lost your registration key try looking in the Help menu of your current version or search the registry using abacus as the keyword. In mine it is found under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ABACUS\TSMODELER and is the line labelled FlagsRun the file AbacusTSM.exe which starts the InstallShield installation. You must type your personalized registration key into the Serial: field during installation.

Carefully review the ReadMe file for any last minute notes. mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again

Aha. That makes a difference. To animate an item in v1.1 you first of all select it and then click the Anim button on the taskbar. A new small window pops up with a slider and two buttons, Motion and Rotation. There is also a "window" with the number of frames in it.For simple to-fro movement you use the Motion button, and for movement that is to-fro and includes some rotation you use both, set the Motion first and the Rotation second. The most essential thing to do first of all is to set the part in the first position and set the first and last frames in that position so you get a smooth transition. Then move the slider back to the start and then on to the first frame. Move the part to the next position and click Motion. If you need to include an element of rotation to the part make sure that you set it into the position that it will be in for the frame and then click Motion and Rotation in that order. Continue with this until you have done the next to last frame. It seems difficult at first, but as you learn how to, it gets easy. It also beats trying to hand write a .rot or .mot file/mervyn@madasafish.com

I just realized that I need to figure out the height that the pistons will move. If I don't figure that out, I won't be able to determine the intervals that I should put inbetween the frames. I think the height that the pistons move is about 1 foot, but I'm not sure. Does that sound about right?mrWM734current projects:

RE: Atlantic continued.......again

For the purposes of animation of this engine it is probably best to start with the rod that connects the gear to the driverod. The reason for this is that the up-down movement of the top end of this rod will determine how far the piston rod moves. The bottom end will have to rotate in synch with the gearwheel. The best way to deal with this problem is to make a very small tube or box to use as a marker and make it a part of the gear, placing it where the bottom of the rod is when in frame 0 and 8. Click the Anim button and if the rod is in the correct starting position click the Motion and Rotation buttons in that order. Move the slider to the other end and click those buttons again in the order Motion and Rotation. That sets the first and last frame in the same position. Now go back to frame 1 and reposition the rod so that the bottom is on the marker and the top is in line with the driverod. You will have to use the straight and the curved arrow buttons to do this, remember to lock the axis that you do not want to move in each case. When happy with the position of the rod click Motion then Rotation. Work your way round following the marker until you have done frame 7 and the animation of the first part is complete. Now do the same for the associated driverod this time making the moving end match the height of the end of the gear rod for each frame. Finally you can do the piston rod with a simple up and down Motion only this time, making the top end match the driverod movement. That completes the animation of one side. Convert it to MSTS and take it for a run and note anything that needs adjusting. Back into TSM and fine tune if needed. When it is OK, go do the other side.mervyn@madasafish.com

RE: Atlantic continued.......again

OK. It is not an easy thing to grasp at first. The motion is the up-down movement of the rod and the Rotation is the movement of the bottom end as it follows the gearwheel round in a circle. If you look at any steam engine that has outside cylinders the rod that connects the cylinder to the drive rods on the wheels has the action that you are looking for. The end nearest the wheels would be the bottom of your rod and the end by the piston is equal to the top of your rod You just have to translate that action from the horizontal into the near vertical of your model. mervyn@madasafish.com
